Walt Whitman Timeline

May 31 Walt Whitman was born in Long Island, New York

When Whitman was 12 he started to learn the printing trade in Brooklyn and New York City.

Whitman was discharged from the "Eagle" in 1848 b/c of his support for Free Soil Journalism.

Walt Whitman Sr. moved the family to Brooklyn, New York

Whitman edited a newspaper in New York and edited the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Whitman messed with real estate to get his mind off the trouble in New York.

The first edition of "Leaves of Grass was written and promoted at Whitman's expense. Later that year Leaves of 2 was released .

Whitman went to care for his brother who was wounded at Fredericksburg .

Whitman's friend William O'Connor published the Good Gray Poets b/c of Whitman's victimization of injustice. Whitman became ill.

Whitman recovers enough to make a trip to the west.

A Boston publisher brought out the third edition of Leaves of Grass but was bankrupted.

Whitman became a clerk in the Department of Interior. He also wrote a series of poems named "Drum Taps .

The fourth edition of "Leaves of Grass" was published.

James R. Osgood publishes the second Boston edition of Leaves of Grass.
