Acting in Theatre of Cruelty

Cruelty is referring to the cruelty it takes for the actors to show the audience something they do not wish to see. Audience should be affected by the performance. Theatre must be built by extreme actions that are pushed beyond all limits. Gifted actors find by instinct how to tap and radiate certain powers; but they would be astonished if it were revealed that these powers, which have their material trajectory by and in the organs, actually exist, for they never realized that these sources of energy actually exist in their own bodies, in their organs. The belief in a fluid materiality of the soul is indispensable to the actor's craft. To know that a passion is material, that it is subject to the plastic fluctuations of the material, makes accessible an empire of passions that extend our sovereignty. Artaud acting places heavy emphasis on invoking deep routed feelings through acting. Theatre was about action and the element of surprise and takes acting to the subconscious level. Artaud acting uses painful memories and strong feelings to invoke strong emotion. Contrast with Brecht: Brecht wanted the audience to go out and change society where Artaud wanted them shaken to their soul and to look within and make changes within themselves.
