Invitro Antibacterial Activity Of Some Indian Medicinal Plants on Urinary Tract Infection Causing Pathogens And Phytochemical Analysis

Of The Plants Shruti Gopinath, Shilpi Singh, Nisha Das and Amudha C.K. Abstract: Antibacterial activities of four Indian medicinal plant extracts were screened against urinary tract infection pathogens namely Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Bacillus spp.and Staphylococcus aureus. Screening for antibacterial activity of aqueous, ethanolic, methanolic and acetone extracts of Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Aegle marmelos, Senna obtusifolia and Pongamia pinnata was done by disc diffusion assay method. Aqueous extract exhibited significant and broader spectrum of inhibition with the maximum zone of inhibition (13mm) against Bacillus spp. An attempt was also made to screen the extracts for their phytochemical components. This revealed the presence of saponins, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, anthraquinones, triterpenoids, steroids, coumarins, proteins and starch in moderate concentration. The results provide scientific basis for use these plants as an alternate remedy for urinary tract infections.
