September 22, 2009 Description -only had about ten minutes -went through pretest-didnt complete many problems, and some problems were incorrect -went through foam number worksheet before time ran out -used Unifix cubes Analysis -plus zero and plus one were mostly okay, needs a lot of help with count up method -sometimes he would count up incorrectly-hundreds chart will be very useful Changes -it was hard to judge so quickly what Enis strengths were, but we should start with the basics -use plus one foam number worksheet -use Unifix cubes and hundreds chart -reinforce problems on white board - have Enis write them -take plus on practice quiz -reinforce on white board if necessary -start on counting up foam number worksheet -use Unifix cubes and hundreds chart

September 29, 2009 Description -practiced with counting up foam number worksheet -worked on turnarounds -used hundreds chart for counting up -did +1, +2, +3 quiz; only one question wrong -worked on sums of ten foam number worksheet using ten frame marked with Unifix cubes Analysis -did extremely well with the hundreds chart; he seemed to need a refresher on how to use it -he didnt think that 5+2 and 2+5 were the same, but when I showed him with different colored Unifix cubes, he understood and began to used the bigger number as the starting point on the number sheet, not just whichever number came first -Enis needed to be able to count the number of blue Unifix cubes needed to fill up the ten frame in order to get the right answer Changes -a brief reminder at the start of next lesson will be helpful to ensure that turnarounds are fully understood -continue to use hundreds chart -continue to use ten frame, but a goal is to reduce use of the ten frame so that sums of ten facts can be more fluent -Enis seems to just need more practice with all his math facts; he doesnt have too much trouble with the concepts -next time review counting up, and work on sums of ten and doubles

Enis B. October 6, 2009 Description - used tens chart to complete sums of ten foam numbers - counted out blue unifix cubes, then filled chart with red unifix cubes - knows that however many red unifix cubes there are is the answer Analysis - learned procedure for using tens chart very well -- he caught on quickly to the pattern and was able to do it without too much prompting - the visual seems to be really good for him -- Enis definitely needs manipulatives October 13, 2009 Description - remembered how to use the tens chart right away, but still depend on it -- cant complete problem by himself - once he remembered which color cube corresponded to which number in the equation, he could tell me with prompting which number was the correct answer - the only question that he couldnt get with prompting was 10 + ___=10. I had to ask him what 10+0 was (which he knew) and then write the equations together, but I still dont think he understood Analysis - Enis can tell me now many blue cubes, how many red cubes, and how many cubes altogether, but he cant transfer it into a number sentence - he says how many blues, reds, and total without any prompting, then stops and is completely stuck Changes - I need to rephrase something, but Im not sure what - Next time we will try writing our own equation based on what Enis tells me. After Enis can write the equation himself, then we will try the fill in the blank version on the foam numbers worksheet Changes - We will continue to practice sums of ten -fluency, and the ability to use the hundreds chart instead of needing to count out unifix cubes every time is the goal. Hopefully practice and repetition will help.

Enis B. October 20, 2009 Description - start with foam numbers sums of ten worksheet using ten frame and unifix cubes - with a little prompting, remembers how to use ten frame - try to get him to complete the entire problem by himself -- was successful except for 10+___=10, where he needed a little prompting Analysis - when we transfer the number of unfix cubes to a blank number sentence before answering the fillin-the-black on the sheet, he seemed to understand much better, and was able to complete the worksheet Changes - have him read the number sentence - review sums of ten -ideally without the use of manipulatives, but use ten frame if need be - give addition test if there is time

October 27, 2009 Description - worked on sums of ten ovals from foam numbers packet - needed prompting to remember to use ten frame, but knew how - worked on the first problem together - I had him write out each number sentence, and when he was done he read the complete number sentence - when we got to 10+___=10, he said, Oh, no, this is the hard one...because there are no reds. I asked what it meant if there were no reds, but he still had to use the ten frame before he would write the answer - took 2 minutes at the end to work on addition post test with hundreds chart Analysis - Enis was very successful today - I think the key was to make sure that he was not skipping any steps -- he had to slow down and think about the number of blocks, but his understanding of the ten frame into words, and then write as a number sentence - can do sums of ten with the ten frame very well, but I think he should learn to use the hundreds chart since he has one on his desk - hopefully having him repeat the number sentence while he is reading it out loud will help him memorize the facts and increase fluency Changes - I will show him how to do sums of ten with a hundreds chart, and we will practice this - doubles if there is time - work on addition post-test again

Enis B. November 3, 2009 Description - showed him how to use hundreds chart to do sums of ten - modeled first problem on foam numbers worksheet, did second problem together, and then Enis was able to complete the rest by himself - got 10+__=10 correct - easily completed worksheet - gave him sums of ten quiz -- started adding ten plus one of the addends together - I reminded him how to use the hundreds chart, and he finished the quiz successfully -- all answers correct - worked on addition posttest -- counted on fingers, used hundreds chart Analysis - Enis has been doing well lately -- he has worked hard on understanding sums of ten, and I think his ability to describe what happens on the tens frame was really helpful Changes - doubles - see what he knows based on worksheet, and then use unifix cubes to practice if need be

November 10, 2009 Description - did doubles worksheet for foam numbers - only knew three problems - for the ones he did not know, I had him build the problems with unifix cubes - for 7+__=14, I made a frame similar to the tens frame on the whiteboard Analysis - I expected Enis to know more doubles than he did, since the other students seem to know them well - Im not sure he understands the concept entirely, so we need to work on the idea that two of the same number are being added together -- mostly he just needs to practice so they become fluent Changes - continue on doubles for fluency, using unifix cubes so that he can see that the addends are the same - maybe review number sentence structure

Enis B. November 17, 2009 Description - worked on doubles on whiteboard - could use unifix cubes or hundreds chart -- picked hundreds chart - used fingers when addends were less than five - worked on doubles quiz - worked on post-test using hundred chart - most were correct, but he said 10+3=8 - even for ones we had not discussed, he used hundreds chart and got the right answer Analysis - Enis progressed a lot over these past weeks. I really think that he has developed a solid understanding of the concepts that we have discussed. - He did much better when he was forced to go through everything step by step. He became really good at using the tens frame, but only after we practiced saying how many blues, how many reds, and how many all together. - Overall, he is a clear and logical thinker. Changes - last lesson
