Dear students and families, As the new semester gets underway, I would like to start off by introducing myself

. My name is Mr. Zachary Smith and I will be a student teacher in your classroom the first half of this semester. This wonderful opportunity to learn here is the last step I will take before receiving my degree is Secondary English Education with additional endorsements in ESL, reading and journalism from Drake University. I am very excited to be here at Ankeny working in Ms. Lawler's classroom. A little bit about myself…I am a 2003 Valley High School graduate; I hope that you will not hold that against me. Following high school, I attended Drake University where I earned bachelor's degrees in public relations and English with a minor in religious studies. The highlights of this time at Drake were spending two and a half years as a residence assistant (RA) and studying abroad in Christchurch, New Zealand. Following these degrees, I moved to China. At Chengde Medical University, in Hebei Province, I served as a foreign language expert where I taught English to nursing students. I also taught English during the evenings to elementary school-aged children. Upon returning from China, I decided to come back to Drake to earn a degree in Secondary English Education. After completing this degree, I will return to China to continue my study in second language acquisition. In my free time, I very much enjoy reading and listening to music. Bill Bryson, currently, is my favorite author even though I will read just about anything printed. As far as music goes, any music you find in my iTunes library will closely resemble jazz or bluegrass. I am looking forward to getting to know you all in the upcoming weeks. We will have many wonderful experiences in the weeks

to come. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns. The best way for you to contact me outside of class would be via e-mail at: Cheers, Mr. Zachary Smith
