Greetings members of San Diego Cadet Squadron 144,

Cadet Commander’s Corner

As this is my first Cadet Commanders Corner that I am privileged to write, I would first like to start out thanking all of the cadet staff and senior members that have guided me in my cadet career since I joined in December 2007. My former staff positions were Recruiting NCO, AE NCO, 1st Sgt, and Deputy Cadet Commander. Filling these positions has taught me a great deal about both leadership and followership, and I encourage every cadet to put the best into their position, and in return they will get the best out of it. I was fortunate to be able to attend the 2011 CAWG Conference, where I was present for the banquet where San Diego Cadet Squadron 144 was awarded Cadet Squadron of the Year. The members of our squadron have shown outstanding dedication and enthusiasm throughout the time I have been involved, but even more so in the last year. And it was noticed. 144 produces cadets of a different caliber than any other squadron, and it is because of your support and motivation that it is possible. Congratulations 144! Our previous Cadet Commander, C/Capt. Daniel Gorin was a major contributor to our squadrons level of excellence, and recently I was speaking to him about our award. He says to extend his congratulations to the cadets and staff. I look forward to a term full of accomplishments for our cadets. We will be setting goals, both at a squadron, and personal level. I expect that you will carry over your 4 key traits that you excercised under Capt. Gorin through my term, and extend them to our next Cadet Commander. Dedication, Determination, Drive, and Enthusiasm. Keep those up, and I'm sure we will see some spectacular results in the next few months. Semper Vi! C/2dLt Jesse O'Keefe

New Members are Joining Squadron 144 Fast!
San Diego Cadet Squadron 144 bids a very big welcome to all of our new members: In July we were joined b cadet Juan Valle. August had two new cadets join: Michael Jurkoic, and Derek Fei Ta. September has already had a huge influx in membership. As of 20 Sept 2011, our new cadets are Ryan Ziegler, Jesse Short, Caleb Woodson, Marc Jewell, Edmund Kapelczak, and Christian Blanco. Do you have your recruiting ribbon yet? Do you know what it takes? All cadets have to do is recruit two new members to join Civil Air Patrol and you will earn the Recruiting Ribbon! Remind your friends there is a spot on the application for them to put you down as their recruiter. If they forgot, make sure you let Capt Jackson know so it can get noted in your record. Keep up the great work Phoenix Squadron!!!

Civil Air Patrol
Citizens Serving Communities: Above and Beyond
Civil Air Patrol was founded in December 1941, one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, by more than 150,000 citizens who were concerned about the defense of America‘s coastline. Under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Forces, CAP pilots flew more than one-half million hours, were credited with sinking two enemy submarines and rescued hundreds of crash survivors during World War II. On July 1, 1946, President Harry Truman established CAP as a federally chartered benevolent civilian corporation, and Congress passed Public Law 557 on May 26, 1948. CAP was charged with three primary missions – aerospace education, cadet programs and emergency services. With the passage of Public Law 106-398 in October 2000, Congress provided that "The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer civilian auxiliary of the Air Force when the services of the Civil Air Patrol are used by any department or agency in any branch of the federal government."
