A Review on The Scarlet Letter Novellete

The Scarlet Letter is a tragic-romantic work of fiction in such a real historical setting. It was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and was first published in the USA by Ticknor, reed and fields in 1850. The novel was said to be Hawthornes greatest book as Hester Prynne, the major character of the novel, became one of the most popular woman in early American writing. The Scarlet Letter offers the readers a story of a tough and faithful woman named Hester Prynne who was punished by the society for discrediting the religions rule through adultery. It also tells its readers her struggles and sacrifices in keeping her daughters as well as her lovers safe throughout all the burdens of public-shaming, sin, secrecy, and guilt in the name of love. The novel is somehow an interesting novel as it addresses religious visions, good values, and moral issues of which those were strictly considered in her era. Furthermore, it shows how the puritant people blamed the purity of ones love by giving such a mental punishment to the lover. Hawthorne gave more concern and care to the sinner as if he tried to tell us that he didnt really think whether the rule and the societys nature at that time were actually proper. through his novel, he came up with the idea of freedom people should have to love and to be loved by anyone. However, Hawthorne should also mention more clearly about the rule being disobeyed especially the religious one showing that yes, what Hester did was really a disobeyence to the rule. So that there would be no misconception saying that religions wrong and no ambiguity that led him to a complain saying Hawthorne did not understand Christianity, confession, and remorse as that being stated by Orestes Brownson.
