A third objection to the sensation of substance is that sensing “consists in a certain

suffering or being changed,”2

whereas substance does not appear to change the sense:3

not the paper but the whiteness in the paper seems to change the sense. For this

reason, then, one might suppose that substance is not an object of the sense power.
