Statement from Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal on New York State Redistricting
New York, NY - "Last night, I voted to reject new district lines for the New York State Legislature, because they are, as some good government groups have put it, 'the most gerrymandered lines in recent New York history.' (NYPIRG) Legislative districts should be drawn with a careful eye on uniting communities of common interest, in such a way as to guarantee that each citizen is fairly and equitably represented and has an opportunity to select, after careful consideration, the candidate whom he or she believes will best represent their interests. Disenfranchising minority communities by splitting legislative districts into unnaturally contorted shapes serves no end but a personal one and is an affront to the values of democracy that we, as elected officials, are sworn to protect. I am encouraged that the Legislature passed a constitutional amendment which, albeit imperfect, will help guarantee that future lines will be the result of a fair and independent process," said Assemblymember Linda. B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan). Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan) represents the 67th Assembly district which includes the Upper West Side and parts of the Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen neighborhoods in Manhattan.
