Student Council Vice President

Zanna McCleary
Zanna is the deputy head of the Student Council for 2012. She is a Year 8 pupil in Room 2 and has been at Russley School for all her primary schooling. Her favourite subjects are art and P.E. Zanna is very sporty and outside of school she is a member of athletics and hockey clubs. She will go to Riccarton High School next year. She was delighted to be appointed to the role of vice president. Her aim for the Council is to organise plenty of fun activities for Russley School students.

School closes for term holidays on Thursday 5 April at 3pm. Term 2 starts on Monday 23 April at 8.50am.

One of the skills shed like to develop further this year is meeting and greeting visitors to the school. Youll get plenty of experience of that in your important new role, Zanna.

A Message from Te Tumuaki

Kia ora tatou, greetings everyone, Fantastic parent support A very big thank you to those wonderful parents who helped make our camps for Teams 3 and 4 so successful. Both groups were fabulous and I know all the teachers felt well supported. There were a lot of exhaustedlooking people getting off the buses - and the students looked tired too! Congratulations to the teachers these events require a major commitment on your part and you gave very generously. Sport Good luck to our sports people participating in the Primary Schools triathlon today, the swimmers for the Centrals next Thursday and to the players going to the touch rugby competition next Friday. Many thanks to parents for helping with these events. It is too expensive for the school to fund and enter some sports competitions where there is only a small team of participants, so parent support is essential. Road Safety at the Pinehurst Cres. Entrance There have been concerns by residents in Fovant, Bentley and Penwood Streets and Pinehurst Crescent about the increased traffic volume, speed and parking in the area. The dangers were highlighted by a concerned resident who noted a lot of very young students crossing the road without any adult. In case parents are unaware of the increased hazards they may like to walk one day with their child to check that the route their children are taking is safe. Maths Meeting for Parents Have you ever been puzzled by the way your child does maths at school or nervous about helping them because it all looks so different? Come along to the science room in the new hall at 7.30pm next Tuesday 27th March to find out why maths looks so different and how you can help your child at home. You might even find it fun. If child care is a problem bring yours with you. You may enjoy learning together. Accelerated Learning in Literacy and Maths We are delighted to be included in two Ministry of Education initiatives aimed at accelerating student learning in reading, writing and mathematics. Mrs Devonald and I will attend a two day briefing in Wellington this week about the literacy programme. Then Miss McMurtrie, Mrs Lock and I will attend another two day briefing in Christchurch about the mathematics programme. Following that, these lead teachers will work directly with groups of students and demonstrate best practice for all teachers to use in their classrooms. To be accepted on to both projects is a credit to our teachers and the programmes we have in place.

Keeping Our Kids Safe Parent Help Urgently Required

We urgently require more parent volunteers to give a hand at the Kea pedestrian crossing at the Cutts Road school entrance in the mornings. The number of longstanding parent helpers dropped after their Year 8 children left for high school at the end of last year. Out of a school roll of nearly 400 students, we have only 14 parents currently supporting the school in this way. Its easy! Simply stand on the roadside from 8.25am to 8.50am on a weekday morning, support and guide the student road patrollers at the Cutts Road crossing, and meet and greet the children on their way to school. Let the office know what mornings you are available and well add you to the roster. Gill Gray Parent Co-ordinator

RAINING RED ROSE I can see the rough, flax bush through the sheets of rain On the left I can see an old, beaten trampoline waiting to be touched Today a red, velvet rose has bloomed and is dancing in the wind I always see big, black balls of feathers searching for worms in the grass Dark clouds circle the sky, threatening more rain The old, concrete fence stands silently, waiting to be painted A big mound of colourful, crisp leaves sits there warming hedgehog family Unseen and unheard.
