Parallel & Perpendicular

Part 2
Okay we learned
that parallel
lines have the
SAME SLOPE.

y = (3/2)x + 3

y = (3/2)x - 4
…and the slopes of
perpendicular
lines are
“opposite flips” of
each other.

__
4
y= x-3

_
y= __ x + 5
What if we are given a specific point ?

Well, just plug it into the POINT-SLOPE

Form, and solve it!

y – y1 = m(x – x1)
EXAMPLE: Write the formula for a line that
is parallel to y = 4x + 4, and runs through
the point (2,-3)
y – y1 = m(x – x1)

y – (-3) =
Hmmm. 4(x – 2)
So,Parallel
m must
y +means
3 = 4xsame

equal
-3 4 !!
-3
slope!
y = 4x - 11
