After reading this, watch the video
the words used in translation of the video as follows :Your soul (Ruh) what gives your body life. Your spirit(Nafs) is your free will and your emotions: love, hate, joy, sadness...
Before I try to answer your question ( where does the Spirit go after death ?), I tried to search on the internet for the actual meaning of the word Spirit in english language ,But I found only those meanings taken from the christianity into the english languge and found no distinct precise difference between Spirit and Soul in the way which Qur'an teaches us and I find myself obliged to tell you the arabic words and try to explain the difference between them so as you understand them. And I want you to notice the arabic words (Ruh and Nafs (pleural: Anfus)) to feel the difference. * before I start, I want to tell you what I found and understood about the meanings and difference between the Soul and Spirit according to the Bible. After watching the following video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy_Q_wesh-Q I understood the next : - The Soul according to the Bible: 1- It is the breath of life which the god gave it to Adam and Eve 2- Soul is eternal as god is eternal 3- Soul can think as god thinks and take decisions as god takes decisions 4- Soul was made in the image of god. 5- Soul dwells in one's mind, emotions and will. - The Spirit according to the Bible : 1- God is a Spirit. 2- God dwelled in Adam's and Eve's Spirits before they commit the sin.
3- after they committed the sin their spirits died and god left their spirits where he dwelled. 4- the person who does not believe in Jesus has no Spirit as it died with him at the birth of his life . 5- In Bible Jesus said " I will save you, I will give you a new spirit, and then I will put my spirit within you, within your spirit". 6- After believing in Jesus, one is reborn again and get a new spirit and the holy spirit comes to dwell in his spirit. NB: Unfortunately the words Spirit and Soul are used interchangeably in the translation of the meanings of the Qur'an leading to mistranslation and misunderstanding of the difference between the two words, while the arabic words are very clear in describing them. Also, there are no english words can be equivalent to the arabic words Ruh and Nafs * We belief that man is created of three things 1- the physical body : 2- the Ruh: All what we know about is that It is the breath of life which Allah gave to Adam, Eve and jesus peace be upon them, and it is always attributed to the god,and notice that it is (mis)translated into the english words Spirit or Soul interchangeably because there is no accurate or equivalent word with the same meaning understood from the Qur'an in english language. And after the death of man it returns back to the God accompanied with angels.when it (the Ruh (human soul)) is taken at death, it is lifted up to the heavens just as the Hadith of Al-Bara' proves. *** We begin this journey in our mother's wombs. 120 days after conception the soul is blown into the fetus. Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mus'ud: "Allah's Apostle, the true and truly inspired said, '(The matter of the Creation of) a human being is put together in the womb of the mother in forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his (i.e. the new creature's) deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the Ruh is breathed into him'"[Bukhari]
*70:4, the Qur'an says: ٍﺗَﻌْﺭُﺝُ ﺍﻟْﻣَﻼَﺋِﻛَﺔُ ﻭ ﺭﱡﻭﺡُﺇِﻟَﻳْﻪِ ﻓِﻲ ﻳَﻭْﻡٍ ﻛَﺎﻥَ ﻣِﻘْﺩَﺍﺭُﻩُ ﺧَﻣْﺳِﻳﻥَ ﺃَﻟْﻑَ ﺳَﻧَﺔ َﺍﻝ 4. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little."
3- the Nafs (Pleural: Anfus): The Nafs is what you are and who you are ; your entity. It is what will be reckoned ,enter hell or paradise. it is that of one's self which uses the body as an instrument, and thus governs and controls all parts of it in a comprehensive manner. It is that part which is responsible for one's actions whether these actions are good or bad (mind and will).and it is always attributed to human (Self). When someone begins to die the Angel of Death or Izraeel comes to take the Nafs out of the body and puts it in a place called the Barzakh where it (the Nafs ) is exposed to its seat in hell or paradise till the day of judgement and that is a real torture for those who will see that they will go to hell and not paradise. *3:185, the Qur'an says:

Who can be more wicked than one who inventeth a lie against Allah, or saith, "I have received inspiration" when he hath received none or (again) who saith "I can reveal the like of what Allah hath revealed?" If thou couldst but see how the wicked (do fare) in the flood of confusion at death!― the angels stretch forth their hands, (saying) "Yield up your Anfus (souls). this day shall ye receive your reward a penalty of shame, for that ye used to tell lies against Allah, and scornfully to reject of His Signs!" *and about the grave torment- 40:46, the Qur'an says:
ِﺍﻟﻧﱠﺎﺭُ ﻳُﻌْﺭَﺿُﻭﻥَ ﻋَﻠَﻳْﻬَﺎ ﻏُﺩُﻭًّﺍ ﻭَﻋَﺷِﻳًّﺎ ﻭَﻳَﻭْﻡَ ﺗَﻘُﻭﻡُ ﺍﻟﺳﱠﺎﻋَﺔُ ﺃَﺩْﺧِﻠُﻭﺍ ﺁﻝَ ﻓِﺭْﻋَﻭْﻥَ ﺃَﺷَﺩﱠ ﺍﻟْﻌَﺫَﺍﺏ The Fire; they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon, and on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): "Cause Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!" * 23: 99 - 100, the Qur'an says: "... till the time that death overtakes any of them, he shall say: 'O my Lord, return me [to the world], so that I do [all the] good deeds that I overlooked earlier'. Absolutely not! This is only a word that he shall utter. Behind him there shall be barzakh (a barrier or a veil), till the day that he is risen from the dead." the words, "Behind him there shall be a barrier or a veil (barzakh)" imply that there is a barrier or a veil between the dead and this world, which they are not allowed to cross.
Death is not pure annihilation, but rather both the living and dead are aware, but there is a difference that can't be compared. Death is merely movement from one world to another which is called world of Barzakh (barrier or veil ). It can be described as a journey through a wormhole to a separate dimension of existence.
And Allah Knows Best
I hope this explanation answers your question. You can always get back if you are still unclear. However, this is only my opinion in this regard and I admit any chance of mistake in forming this opinion. I would be open to other points of view if based on stronger reasons. May Allah guide us all towards the right path.
