Former Olympic swimmer and Princess of Monaco, Charlene Wittstock has offered to host the South African swimming team following its financial troubles. South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) CEO Tubby Reddy said the princess would allow the swimmers to stay in Monaco free of charge from June, ahead of their preparation for the Olympic Games in London this summer. We only have to cover travel expenses. She will take care of everything else. Shell provide the facilities, nutrition and accommodation. The news will come as great relief to officials of Swim SA, who have left been in financial arrears following losing a major sponsor and the well publicised problems with Lotto funding. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) had recently asked for more financial support as many codes were struggling, and luckily they are to receive a royal pardon of sorts. Swimming is one of the disciplines the South African team is hoping to win in London, along with four others. The medals would come from swimming, athletics, and maybe cycling, canoeing and rowing, said Reddy. He added at least 100 athletes would be sent to the games, and could increase if more qualify. Charlene was born in Zimbabwe and relocated with her family to South Africa in 1989. The princess represented South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, with her team finishing fifth in the womens 4x100m medley.
