Sam Tracy Geo 105 Field Trip Assignment Shed Aquarium: Energy Conservation by Example The global issue
of energy conservation remains one of humanity's big challenges. As more people are born and consume more resources through daily activities like driving, using water, and electricity, it is becoming imperative for human kind to make more responsible and efficient use of the resources available to us to make sure they are available for generations to come, and Shed Aquarium is working hard to make themselves part of the solution. Shed Aquarium goes above and beyond to send a strong message of active and innovative energy conservation, but more importantly they lead by example. Visitors to the Shed may observe that the toilettes use different water settings dependant on the need to dispose of solid or liquid waste, this cuts down on the amount of water used each day by visitors and over time makes a significant difference in the amount of water used each year by the aquarium. They also utilize informational videos that tie conservation to creativity and responsibility, all while demonstrating the positive impact it has on the environment and the animals at the Shed. Some examples include their use of cold winter air to naturally cool the artic exhibits' tank water to cut down on energy costs, or the installation of drainable floors that put water back into the tanks of splash-happy sea-lions to eliminate waste. The aquarium has an excellent coral reef reclamation program that harvests and grows coral for use by the aquarium and for replanting damaged reefs. They also do everything they can to cut down on "food miles" (the distance and energy food takes to reach its destination) from raising shrimp on site to maintaining their own organic pesticide-free gardens. Essentially, Shed Aquarium does more than point out that there needs to be focus on energy conservation. They show the people that visit the aquarium that it is responsible and with a little creativity and simple life choices, even easy, to use our resources more responsibly and efficiently.
