A Cock and Bull Story Flattening of effect- Use of technology, violence, drugs and the media which leads to a detached, emotionless view of the plot and its characters, making their lives seem unauthentic. e.g. Fight Club Hyperreality- Baudrillards theory that the media and reality are now indestinguishable, that technology has created realities that are more real than the real world. e.g. United 93 Time bending- Time travel providing new ways to shape reality, causes the audience to think what if. e.g. Donnie Darko Altered states- Drugs and technology provide a new darker internal view of life, of humanity. e.g. Requiem for a Dream More human than human- Artificial intelligence used to enhance or replace humanity, e.g. Blade Runner Parody- a copy of something which makes fun of the original. e.g. Scream Also often seen in TV shows such as The Simpsons Bricolage- A collection of images, ideas etc. to make a new piece of art or literature. Irony- when a piece of art/literature is self-consciously doing the opposite of what it appears to be doing. Reflexivity or self-consciousness- when a program/film uses references to itself or its characters to make a point e.g. The Simpsons, A Cock and Bull Story Fragmentation and discontinuity- when storylines and characterization are broken up, disturbed and dont follow the usual pattern e.g. The Butterfly Effect, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Eliot's The Waste Land (1922) Themes: fragmentation of modern life, disconnection from cultural traditions, three keys to restoration: give, sympathize, control. Primary allusions: Fisher King, Grail Legend, Christ's crucifixion, Buddha's Fire Sermon, Dante's Inferno, Shakespeare's The Tempest (those were pearls that were his eyes).
