In his book Insight, Bernard Lonergan describes the Scientific Method as


1. Observation of the Data

2. Insight into Data

3. Formulation of insights into a Theory

4. Verification of the Formulated Theory

(Insight 79). However, in his Essay Cognitional Structure Bernard Lonergan states

that we know reality through the following:

1. Experience

2. Understanding

3. Judgment and Reflection

It is apparent that both of the above describe the same process using different

languange. The also parallels Plato and Aristotle and their discussion of

1. Body Senses

2. Soul Mind

3. Spirit Wisdom

Fianally, it should be noted that there is no reason that experience cannot include mystical

experience, intuitive experience, and spiritual experience.
