Major leaguers touchdown!


By DARRYL HOLYK innedosa and District Recreation Commission hosted its 15th annual Sports Dinner at the Minnedosa Community Conference Centre on the evening of Saturday, April 14th. Th years sports theme was is football with guest speaker Doug Brown of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and keynote speaker, NFL and CFL Hall of Famer, Warren Moon. Th e Minnedosa RBC Girls Soccer Team served the 190 guests a delicious roast beef dinner catered by Heathers Catering. Local radio personality, Tyler Glen from 94.7 Star FM served as the evenings emcee. Following supper, and the presentation of door prizes as well as recognition plaques to the evenings gold, silver and bronze sponsors, Doug Brown was welcomed to the podium. Doug shared some personal and entertaining stories that had the crowd howling with laughter. His 15-year professional football career began in 1997 with the Buffalo Bills followed by two years with the Washington Red Skins. He came to the CFL in 2001 and has played eleven years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Last month, Doug announced his retirement and in June, he will be inducted into the Blue Bombers Hall of Fame. Although late arriving, due to a delayed fl ight, CFL Hall of Famer, Warren Moon was welcomed to Minnedosa with a standing ovation. During his 45-minute speech, Moon commended the community for holding a Sports Dinner in support of local youth recreation. Make sure your young people have the opportunity to get out and get involved with sports. Th are so ere many good things that come from athletics. Im so proud of what you do in this community to try and help your young people as they come up through life. It gives them a positive experience and teaches them about sportsmanship and hard work.
