at Annual Dinner this Weekend YONKERS, NY April 23, 2012 The Yonkers Fire Department gathered Saturday, April 21 to recognize this years outstanding members at its annual awards dinner held a t the Polish Community Center. The annual dinner paid tribute to Michael Giroux as Firefighter of the Year and Captain Lawrence Cuculo, Firefighters Patrick Con nors, James Miller, and Thomas Larson, of Engine Company 304, as EMS Crew of the Year. Yonkers Firefighters Local 628 IAFF bestowed the prestigious Firefighter of the Year Award to Michael Giroux, of Rescue Company-1, for his rescue of two workers who were trapped on the side of a 28-story building as the result of a scaffold ing collapse. The March 4, 2011 rescue received national and international accla im, resulting in Firefighter Giroux receiving numerous awards for this rescue, i ncluding most recently the prestigious Firehouse Magazine 2011 Heroism and Commu nity Service Award. Additionally, Captain Lawrence Cuculo, Firefighters Patrick Connors, James Mille r, and Thomas Larson, of Engine Company 304, were recognized as EMS Crew of the Year. On January, 25, 2011, Engine 304 responded to a report of a severely prema ture birth with the baby not breathing. Upon the crews arrival minutes later, the y encountered a four months premature baby which had been delivered by the babys mother. The baby was not breathing and the umbilical cord was still attached. Th e members of Engine 304 provided artificial respirations, suctioning, warming an d other measures which resulted in successfully reviving the child. Empress Ambu lance arrived and, with assistance from Engine 304, they transported the mother and child to the hospital where both made a full recovery. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano attended the awards dinner on Saturday, stating I am alw ays impressed by the level of heroism of our firefighters. These individuals are the best in the country and these awards are just a small token of the gratitud e that we as a City have for them.
