solar year of 365 1/4 days into line with the calendar of 365 days. This is the one day of the year on which, traditionally, women can propose to men. It was considered that as the day had no legal status, it was reasonable to assume that tradition had no status, so women took advantage of this and proposed to the man they want to marry. This tradition comes from an old Irish legend where a nun called St. Bridget, petitioned St. Patrick on behalf of all women in that they have a more active role in choosing their husbands. As a result women were allowed to propose to men once every 4 years.

MELTHAM LUNCH A TRIP TO ETHIOPIA?

Everyone seemed to enjoy their lunch on Friday 3rd February. The lunch was Chicken and Leek Pie with mashed potatoes, carrots, cabbage and gravy. Dessert was Apple Crumble and Custard. Whilst everyone enjoyed a cup of tea/ coffee the Raffle was drawn. Our guest speaker was Mrs Pat Alker. Pat spoke about Ethiopia. Pat and her husband Philip have raised funds since 2007 for Ethiopia. Their fund raising has paid for Mekonen to finish school and go to college in Lalibela. He now has his own Ladies Garment Business and can help support his family. They now help a school in Dukem and have paid for their water supply, electricity and a new school toilet and food for the childrens lunches. In 2010 they raised 2.500 and some of this money went to build toilets. In Dosannech the women do all the work. The boys look after the animals and men do nothing only chat and make themselves beautiful. In Derish and Konso when they die they are wrapped in a cloth and buried sat up. When a King of Konso dies he is covered in Honey to preserve the body and he is put on show for 9 years 9 months and 9 days. The son goes to Adisababa for education, then comes home to take his place in the Royal Family. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped me on Friday.

DENBY DALEORDER,ORDER
We have been very lucky in this part of the world so far this year, although the weather forecasts for icy road conditions on 'our day' were very worrying the night before, the actual day was not too bad, although very cold, so it was all systems go! This month we learned what happens to you if you are a naughty person and have to be taken to court. A magistrate came to tell us about the magistrates court system and the work they do. Seemingly it was in the 17th Century that Magistrates were first appointed around the country. Of course then they were landowners, but now anyone can volunteer to be a Magistrate as long as they are local to the area. This is going to be more difficult now as Dewsbury and other local courts are closing because of the cut backs and they will all be coming to Huddersfield. The magistrates act on behalf of the Queen and must treat every one alike according to the laws of the land. They cannot show any allegience to a political party or military force by their clothing or badges. All cases go first to the magistrates court, of which there is a Youth Court, a Family Court and 5 Adult Courts. The Magistrates have a Bench Book to consult and make the punishment fit the crime and the punishment is the same countrywide. When they apply for the job they are given a year's training and a more experienced person oversees their work. They are appraised each year. So after we had taken all that in we were ready for our cup of tea and delicious scones. Jean got our brains going by taking us back to the 'good old days' and proper money. Of course there was a catch to it and you had to solve the cryptic clues to find the answer What does a gorilla and part of it's leg have to do with money? I ask you! Especially if you were taught always to pronounce your aitches when you were small. ( 'ape knee?) So, Hazel Locke, Betty Sharp,Tony Fisher and Audrey Mathers came up with the most right answers. And Joyce Brooke, Audrey Mathers, David Lunn and Freda Tinsley were lucky on the raffle.

FEBRUARY 14TH VALENTINES DAY DID YOU GIVE YOUR HEART AWAY?
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some say it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Whatever the origins St Valentines Day had become a date for exchanging love messages and a celebration of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. The date is marked by sending poems and simple gifts, such as flowers, to loved ones and secret loves.

HOLMFIRTH PROJECTBEHIND YOU

3rd February We had an entertaining meeting with music from Malcolm to start with playing golden oldies to which we sang along. After lunch delicious the Holme Valley Court Armchair Theatre gave us their Cinderella with a bit of a twist which we all enjoyed. Finally a sing-song with a British theme all did sing along with gusto. Thanks to Judy for the lunch and to Malcolm, Eave, Olive, June and Marjorie.

HOLMFIRTH PROJECT- DREAMY

17th February Janet started off with The Top Ten Dreams. These are the most common dreams worldwide as interpreted by Ian Wallace, dream psychologist. Members and volunteers shared their dream experiences and where possible discovered what they mean. E.g dreaming you are queuing for the loo means you put the needs of others before your own. Quite a few of us had this one. Winifred told us of touching dreams in which she felt the presence of her sister and husband but didnt know how to find them. Another one of Winifreds involved a leap from Beachy Head; fortunately she had a soft landing which made her giggle!

NETHERTON GROUP
January 2012 It was good to meet up again with everyone after Christmas and we enjoyed a good catch up over lunch. After that we had a go at Tea bag folding. This is a paper folding craft originating in Europe. One can compare it to origami because the basic origami folds are used, such as, the water bomb and the square base. Why is it called Tea bag folding? Tea Bag Folding may have been around for decades but it is thanks to an artist in Holland that it has worldwide recognition. Tiny Van Der Plas came upon the name as she was sitting with her cup of tea. Of course, her artist mind was whirling and as she was thinking about a greeting she wanted to make, she was also working her fingers with the papers that covered her tea bags. European teas come in fancy papers and hence the name was born. Jane had brought along the pre-cut papers and showed us the technique. This had to be repeated to make 8 interlocking segments which then just joined together to make a whole decorative piece to stick on the card. It was a little fiddly but we all managed to produce a card to take home.

OLD MELTHAM HISTORY GROUP

For the January meeting we continued with the theme of our favourite poems and books which we had started to explore from last month. Murial Walton brought in an old dialect poem from Lancashire which she read to the group. Most of it we could understand and for the phrases and words that we didnt we had fun trying to work it out. Sheila Sinclair brought in a copy of The Messiah and Murial read that to us as well. Murial did a wonderful job of reading both which we all thoroughly enjoyed. After a break, Jane had brought along the new enormous scanner, which the group had purchased from their own funds. Members then scanned their own photos, poems, recipes and these copies will then be used to stick
