May is Older Americans Month
In 1963, only 17 million living Americans reached their 65th birthdays, and of those, a third lived in poverty. However, President John F. Kennedy established Senior Citizens Month that same year, in response to a growing concern for older Americans. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter designated the month as Older Americans Month. During this month, we honor the contributions of older persons to our country and celebrate with ceremonies, events, fairs and other activities. This year’s theme is ―Never Too Old to Play‖. Here are some events planned for this month: Saturday, May 5, 2012 - Innovations in Aging 2012 Expo—Gaylord’s National Hotel and Conference Center,
National Harbor, Maryland. Free workshops, exhibits, educational sessions, exercise and cooking demos. For more information call 410-767-1100 or go innovationsinaging2012.com or go to www.aging.maryland.gov For free bus transportation, available from select locations in Montgomery County, please call 240-777-1131.

Saturday, May 19, 2012- Senior Solutions Fair—Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue,
Takoma Park, Maryland. Free workshops, exhibits, educational sessions and exercise demos. For more information, call Ms. Urrikka Woods at 301-768-1847 or go to
