an imprimatur /0hurch appro$al1 of the first edition of the 0omplete Works of #alileo, thus
acknowledging the $alidity of #alileo2s perspecti$es& In 3'3, )ope 4ohn )aul II requested that
the )ontifical Academy of Sciences conduct an in5depth study of the #alileo case& A
commission of scholars con$ened, and they presented their report to the )ope on .ctober ",

TESTIMONY: GALILEO GALILEI, DEFENDANT AND WITNESS FOR THE DEFENSE
I ha$e always been interested in science& I began my studies as a student of
medicine and philosophy in 78 at the Uni$ersity of )isa& My first research focused on
the study of the pendulum, which I understand has now been de$eloped into the
pendulum clock&
It was while I was a professor of mathematics at the Uni$ersity of )adua that I
became interested in motion of falling bodies, spherical geometry, and astronomy&
9uring this period, I learned of the writing of :icolaus 0opernicus, a )olish
scientist& -e wrote a treatise on the ;e$olutions of the 0elestial .rbs, that the earth,
rotating once a day on its own a<is, re$ol$ed around the sun& After in$enting the
world2s first telescope in !=3, I was able to see remarkable astronomical disco$eries
that supported the theory that the earth rotated around the sun& I made new
arguments for the 0opernican system > and presented these arguments in a series of
letters&
I should also say that I am a $ery strong belie$er in #od and a de$out member of
the ;oman 0atholic 0hurch& In fact, all my disco$eries show the work of #od in creating
this fabulous uni$erse& -owe$er, I had enemies who were afraid to embrace these new
disco$eries& My mission was to increase awareness of scientific though and, in the
process, rescue the 0atholic 0hurch from its blatant refusal to see the cosmos as it
really is& In !!, I was called to ;ome, and )ope #regory , admonished me against

holding my $iew that the earth mo$ed around the sun& I am '= years old now and in
bad health, and I do not remember e<actly e$erything about the case of !!&
-owe$er, I do not think that I was ordered not to teach, defend, or discuss the sun5
centered theory of the uni$erse&
When I returned home from ;ome in !!, I abandoned in$estigation of this issue&
-owe$er, when a new pope was elected, )ope Urban ,III, his pri$ate secretary
contacted me and asked me to once again renew my in$estigations& 9uring the early
years of )ope Urban ,III2s reign, he and I had long discussions, including discussions of
the 0opernican system&
As required by the )ope, I submitted the book to the ,atican2s chief licenser,
:iccolo ;iccardi, who promised his help and said that any theological /religious1
difficulties could be o$ercome& ?$en in !"= when I went to ;ome, the )ope was $ery
encouraging& -e repeatedly said that if the book treated contending $iew hypothetically
and not absolutely, the book could be published&
0hief licenser ;iccardi had some problems with the book and demanded that I
re$ise the preface and conclusion to be more consistent with the )ope2s position& I
made those changes as requested& @inally, in @ebruary !"6, with the chief licenser2s
permission, the book was published& I was $ery pleased that the book, which quickly
sold out, soon became the talk of the literary public&
Ahen in late summer of !"6, the )ope ordered publication of the book to be
suspended& .n September 7, )ope Urban told @rancesco :iccolini, who had come to the
,atican to protest the suspension decision, that I had decei$ed him by assuring him that
the book would comply with papal instructions, when in fact I had circum$ented /gone
around1 them& Ahis is absolutely not true&
I am angry& My goal has been to spread scientific awareness to the public&
Instead I ha$e been frustrated by a narrow5minded bureaucracy intent on preser$ing its
own power& I ha$e done nothing wrong& )ope Urban ,III authorized me to write about
0opernicanism, I followed the required form& I e$en re$ised my work to meet the
censor2s ob%ections& And I obtained a license& What more could authorities e<pectB
