Serving the Needs of All Santa Monicans Since 1979
Assemblymember Betsy Butler P.O. Box 5050 Santa Monica, CA 90409-5050 Dear Betsy, We and our many members in Santa Monica were dismayed to receive your announcement of your recent endorsement by the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles (AAGLA) in your quest for election to the California State Assembly from the 50th Assembly District. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. The population of the 50th Assembly District is among the densest renter populations in all of Southern California. The communities of Santa Monica (1979), West Hollywood (1984), and West Los Angeles (1978) fought hard to create their rent control and eviction protections and have fought hard ever since to preserve them.
This endorsement and your apparent enthusiasm for it will certainly sow doubt and mistrust for your candidacy among the renter voters of Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and West Los Angeles, the largest communities of the 50th AD.
During that time AAGLA has been a continuous and vigorous opponent of rent control and eviction protections. The biggest success they have had in rolling back our rent control protections occurred as a result of legislation in Sacramento. Needless to say, it is a matter of great concern if you are making common cause with anti-rent control organizations in our state.
Perhaps as a new resident of this district you are unaware of the sensitivity of this issue and the role of AAGLA as a leader of the landlord opposition to rent control. We urge you to state your commitment to the strongest possible rent control and eviction protections for the residents of the 50th AD.
