Stages of Labor

Third Trimester (29-40 Wks)


29-32nd Week Babys bones are fully formed but still soft Kicks and jabs are forceful Eyes can open and close and sense changes in light Lungs are not fully formed, but practice breathing movements occur Begins to store vital minerals, such as iron and calcium Lanugo begins to fall off 15-17 inches long and weighs about 4- 4 pounds 33rd- 36th Week Protective waxy coating gets thicker Body fat increases Less room to move around 16-19 inches long, weighs about 6- 6 pounds 37th- 40th Week Full term Organs are ready to function on own May weigh from 6 pounds 2 ounces and 9 pounds 2 ounces and be 19 to 21 inches long

First Stage
Early Labor Phase Time of onset of labor until cervix is dilated to 3 cm Expect: Lasts approx. 8-12 hrs. Contractions last about 30-45 seconds giving 5-30 min. of rest in between Contractions are typically mild but progressively get stronger Tightening in the pelvic area Active Labor Phase Continues from 3 cm until dilated to 7cm Lasts 3-5 hours Contractions last about 45-60 seconds with 35 min. rest in between Contractions will feel stronger and longer Transition Phase Continues from 7 cm until dilated to 10 cm Last about 30 min. to 2 hours Cervix will dilate from 8 cm. to 10 cm Contractions last 60-90 sec. with a 30 second to 2 minute rest in between. Contractions are long strong and intense Hardest phase but shortest might experience hot flashes, chills, nausea, vomiting, or gas
