Bright Step One: Choose a contemporary poet and one of his/her published poems. See websites like www.poets.org as a starting place. • You will have 2 days in class on Friday, April 16th and April 19th to choose your poet and do your research. • You will need to bring index cards with you to class on these days. • By Tuesday, April 20th, you should have at least 3 works cited cards and at least fifteen note cards. Step Two: Study the poem you have chosen and research the author’s life. Draw educated conclusions between the two. Be sure to follow Mrs. Bright’s instructions carefully when you take notes. Step Three: Write an essay in which you use the information you have learned about your author’s life and background to analyze his/her poem. • Please reference the notes we took in class for specific ideas to focus on in your paper. • Your paper should be around two pages typed, should included work cited page and parenthetical documentation, and should follow the writing steps we have learned previously in class. • You will have the opportunity to work on your rough draft in class for the majority of the period on Wednesday and Thursday, April 21st and 22nd. Please bring your flash drive to class if you have one. • Your may participate in an in-class writing workshop on Thursday, April 22nd. • Final drafts are due Friday, April 23rd.
