3 Preparation Notes Nocturne for Prepared Piano (and unprepared pianist) requires 17 large magnets, 35 small magnets, 27 hair ties, 6 finger cymbals, and one 12”x2” copper bar (or other heavy metal object of equivalent size). The following items were used in the premiere performance: Large Magnets: Round craft magnets, 1/2” diameter x 3/16” thick. Harbor Freight Tools item no. 98405. Small Magnets: Rare earth magnets, 5/16” diameter x 1/8” thick. Harbor Freight Tools item no. 67488. Hair Ties: Scunci No Damage Ponytail Holders (or equivalent). Finger Cymbals: Novelty toy finger cymbals, quality unimportant. The premiere performance used finger cymbals bought on Amazon for $0.89 per pair. Copper Bar: Electrical-grade copper mounting bar, 12”x2”. Unless specified otherwise, items cover the entirety of strings per note. Hair ties may be folded and inserted between strings 1-2 and 2-3 without problem. Large magnets will cover all strings, small magnets are to cover all strings unless otherwise noted or impossible. Finger cymbals are generally mounted with 2 magnets, 1 each at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions, and then affixed to the strings. The Table of Preparations consists of measurements taken on a Yamaha G3 Grand piano (6’1”), and distances may need to be adjusted per performance. The entirety of the preparations may be accomplished within a half-hour, unpreparation may be accomplished within five minutes.
