In experiments with a vertically held bar magnet, its ability to attract soft iron tacks was tested. The results are shown by in the diagrams.

In the various cases, the average number of tacks attracted was as follows: (a) Indicate on the given diagram the polarity of the soft iron. [1]

(b) If the soft iron was gently slid off the end of the magnet whilst holding 8 tacks, state and explain what would happen. [2] All the tacks would drop off as soft iron loses magnetism easily, hence it loses the induced magnetism as it slides off the magnet.

(c) Although wood is a non-magnetic material, a few tacks are attracted when the wood is held covering the end of the magnet. Suggest a reason for this. [2] the magnetic field from the magnet is able to penetrate wood however the magnetic field is weakened, hence only few tacks are attracted.
