Mrs.

Drains Summer Reading Club

June 8, 2012 Dear Students and Parents, As summer quickly approaches, I reflect on all of the achievement and academic gains that each student has obtained this school year. I once read that the best predictor of summer reading loss or summer reading gain is whether or not students read during the summer, so Im inviting/requiring each student to join Mrs. Drains Summer Reading Club (SRC). The Summer Reading Club (SRC) requires each student to read at least three books over the summer from the provided book list that is specific to each students reading level. In addition to reading the three books, each student must write three different letters to Mrs. Drain in response to what theyve read following the format below. Once Ive received the letters, I will write the students back, so please ensure that the return address is correct. Students can submit their letters either on www.edmodo.com or via the U.S. Mail. My address is 7647 Pioneer Dr. Ypsilanti, MI 48197. If you are choosing to mail the letters, please make sure that each letter is in the mailbox at least three days before the due date to ensure delivery on time. I will provide each student with three self-addressed envelops. You are responsible for the stamps; however, if you are unable to get stamps, accommodations can be made. SRC begins Monday, June 18, 2012. The due dates for the letters are: July 6th, August 3rd, and August 24th. The letters should be 3-paragraphs in length, 5 sentences per paragraph. 1. The first paragraph should be a summary of what's happened in your book, identifying the characters, the setting, and plot. Don't forget to include the title of your book, the author, and the pages read so far. Also, answer any questions posed by Mrs. Drain in her letters to you. 2. The second paragraph is in response to one of the reflection option. Please refer to Reflection Options-2nd Paragraph document for specific details. 3. Finally, the third paragraph should be about your summer (what have you done, seen, and how much have you missed me?). Please wait until you receive my response letter before you being writing your next letter, so that you can answer my questions in your first paragraph. HAPPY READING!
