We now begin our discussion of high speed flight. In our discussions so far we have
assumed the aeroplane was traveling through the air at well below the speed of sound. In
that situation air molecules are able to move out of the aeroplanes way and thus air
density is more or less unchanged by the passage of the aeroplane. But as velocity
approaches the speed of sound the aeroplane will compress the air it is passing through.
This substantially changes the way lift and drag develops.
