The uranium enrichment process seeks to raise levels of U-235, a rare isotope used to fuel bombs and reactors. Iran has succeeded in raising levels to about 5 percent and 20 percent; the latter is close to bomb grade.

Iran’s output has risen steadily. A growing portion of this total went to make the more potent uranium that is 20 percent U-235.

Roughly 1,000 kilograms at 5 percent concentration could eventually be refined into enough for one bomb. That amount was made by early 2009.
