Memorial pays homage to Carranza
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Tabernacle Sun
John and Theresa Unger of Al-
lentown, Pa., may not have any di-
rect relation to Captain Emilio
Carranza, but their soon-to-be
born daughter will be named
Emily in his honor.
The Ungers are self-proclaimed
history buffs who have traveled to
Mexico in the past. They were
two of the many who journeyed
into the Pine Barrens and braved
the humid and wet conditions at
the 84th annual Carranza Memo-
rial Service on Saturday, July 14.
In July 1928, Carranza, a cap-
tain in the Air Corps of the Army
of Mexico, was in transit back to
his home country on a goodwill
mission flight leaving New York
for Mexico City when his plane
encountered a violent storm over
the forest.
He lost control and crashed to
his death.
He had been commissioned by
the Mexican government to un-
dertake the flight.
Carranza is often considered
the Charles Lindbergh of Mexico.
When the crash occurred,
(American Legion) Mt. Holly Post
No. 11 was instrumental in find-
ing the body and bringing it out,
said Lawrence Gladfelter, com-
mander for Post No. 11. They
also stood guard at the court-

months pregnant.

District meets education standards
The Lenape Regional High
School District Board of Educa-
tion, at its regular monthly meet-
ing on July 18, announced that
the district has met the require-
ments of the New Jersey Depart-
ment of Education's (NJDOE)
Quality Single Accountability
Continuum (QSAC) and has been
designated a high performing
district.
The QSAC measures five per-
formance areas: instruction and
program, fiscal management,
governance, operations and per-
sonnel. To meet the requirements
for a high performing designa-
tion, the school district must
score at least 80 percent or higher
in each of these categories. The
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict (LRHSD) scored 100 percent
in four of the five areas and 95
percent in instruction and pro-
gram.
A designation of high per-
forming in the QSAC is a testa-
ment to the dedication and com-
mitment of the Lenape Regional
Districts efforts to be a leader in
progressive education, said Su-
perintendent of Schools Carol L.
Birnbohm, Ed.D. "We are proud of
this achievement and grateful to
our students, faculty, staff and
community for ensuring that we
can provide our students with a
secure, challenging and energiz-
ing environment, she said.
The goal of the New Jersey
QSAC is to ensure that all school
districts are operating at a high
level of performance. Based on
the LRHSDs compliance with the
indicators, Christopher D. Cerf,
the acting commissioner for the
NJDOE said that LHRSD, be cer-
tified as providing a thorough
and efficient system of educa-
tion.
Chris Heilig, LRHSD director
of Programs and Planning, ex-
plains that QSAC is a long
process requiring enormous
amounts of documentation.
Fiscal management, one of the
key accountabilities of QSAC, in-
cludes nearly 30 specific stan-
dards ranging from ensuring ac-
curate balance sheets to conduct-
ing annual health and safety re-
views. LRHSD Business Adminis-
trator James H. Hager noted the
QSAC monitoring confirmed the
district's fiscal health and ac-
countability to the community.
Hager also complimented the
district staff for providing excel-
lent programs and preparing for
the QSAC review.
It's a lot of hard work to get
ready for the monitoring in every
area, said Hager. Being recog-
nized as a high performing dis-
trict is quite an accomplish-
ment.
Public school districts are re-
quired to go through the QSAC re-
view every three years.

Wreaths were placed at the memorial
house in Mt. Holly.
Carranzas body was returned
to Mexico on a train after making
stops in nearby Chatsworth and
Mt. Holly, as well as back to New
York.
To continue his message of
goodwill, Post No. 11 has held a
memorial every year since pledg-
ing in 1929 to continue to pay
homage as the years progress.
Eighty-four years and we
havent stopped yet, said Gladfel-
ter.
In keeping the tradition alive,
Post No. 11 is following the first
order of every soldier, said Lt.
Colonel Robert E. Jennings, vice
commander of the New Jersey
wing of the Civil Air Patrol dur-
ing the service.
Jennings was one of the spe-
cial speakers representing both
the United States and Mexico.
The dismal weather conditions
were appropriate for the service,
said Richard Franzen, mayor of
Tabernacle Township and long-
time resident.
The weather we see today, the
rain, the clouds, the high humidi-
ty, is probably what Emilio Car-
ranza faced, he said.
The conditions made the event
a special one for him, as the sky is
usually cooperative and bright.
Boy Scouts from troops in Sha-
mong and Medford Lakes made
the trek for educational reasons.
According to assistant Scout-
master Lawrence Caldwell, 10
scouts from Troop No. 48 of Med-
ford Lakes camped at Goshen
Pond in Shamong and rode their
bikes to the memorial service.
Its a great opportunity, he
said. Weve never done this be-
fore.
Scouts were able to achieve
merit badges.
While the rain managed to not
affect most of the days program,
there was no fly over during the
event due to safety concerns.
Prior to the annual re-enact-
ment, more than 25 wreaths were
placed at the memorial, a pillar
that stands in the middle of a
clearing off of Carranza Road in
Wharton State Forest. Tabernacle
Township and Shamong Town-
ship were represented.
Suddenly, Post No. 11 members
congregated and dashed into the
woods, soon thereafter returning
with a blanket covering a corpse
with a hand outstretched a
flashlight clutched just as it was
said that the original American
Legion members found his re-
mains.
As the years have progressed,
Gladfelter said that the true feel-
ing of Carranza has come closer.
He is the greatest hero of
Mexican aviation, said Gene O-
Grady, department commander of
the American Legion Depart-
ment of N.J. He was a true patri-
ot.
This is where it ended, he
added.

ranza and obtain directions to his

egans Law was, if anything,
an extremely forward-think-
ing way of ensuring that
convicted sex offenders were easily
identifiable wherever they might live
after spending time locked away. Now,
if one state senator has his way, sex of-
fenders would not only have to register
their residential locations, theyd also
be required to identify themselves as
convicted sex offenders on social-
media websites such as Facebook.
We applaud this bill, and hope it ulti-
mately winds up on the governors
desk to be signed into law.
In addition to having to publicly dis-
close sex-offense convictions, the bill,
sponsored by state Sen. Kip Bateman,
R-Somerset, would also require offend-
ers to list, on their public profiles,
home addresses, where crimes took
place and a self description.
While there will be some who say a
bill such as this one goes too far and
is an invasion of privacy we believe
its for the best.
Far too often, we hear stories of sex-
ual predators who use the Internet to
prey on the vulnerabilities of young
people.
A few years ago, the Dateline NBC
specials To Catch a Predator re-
vealed just how many people used the
Internet to set up what they believed
were trysts with young people.
The penalties for failing to comply
with the proposed law are swift, as
well. A sex offender caught with a pub-
lic profile that doesnt identify a
Megans Law status would carry with
it a potential fine of $10,000 and up to a
year-and-a-half in prison.
A similar law was adopted in
Louisiana recently.
We commend Bateman for propos-
ing this bill. And we hope other states
take notice and enact similar legisla-
tion. There is no doubt that by having a
law such as this one on the books, pred-
ators will think twice about preying
upon the young.
And the children of our state will be
that much safer because of it.
in our opinion
Taking Megans Law to Facebook
State Senate bill would require sex offenders to self-ID on social-networking sites
Is the proposed law
too invasive?
A bill proposed by state Sen. Kip
Bateman, R-Somerset, would require
convicted sex offenders to identify
themselves, as such, on social-network-
ing websites. Would such a law be fair?
Carranza flight offers leaders a lesson
We stood in the rain. It was wet. It was
cloudy. It drizzled. And of course it was
humid. The only thing missing were the
thunderclaps and lighting. Emilio Carran-
za would have made his final landing on a
day like todays 84th anniversary of his
1928 unintended and fateful visit to the
Wharton Forrest. Over a forty year period I
have attended many of the Captain Emilio
Carranza memorial services. The sun has
always shown brightly, the sky was a deep
summer blue and white puffy clouds
floated overhead.
Not even the Civil Air Patrol flyover was
possible. It was as if Emilio himself had
said enough is enough, you need to see
what it was really like. And we did. Sever-
al hundred of us ventured down Carranza
Road to his monument. Cars parked amid
Jersey bull pines which may have wit-
nessed the aviators arrival. But the serv-
ice went on with-
out a hitch.
American Le-
gion Mount Holly
Post 11 organized
the memorial
service. It is an
event they have
been leading for
many, many years.
Speakers included
representatives of
the Mexican Em-
bassy, American
Legion, Civil Air
Patrol and the Car-
ranza family. In a
very moving ceremony, over 25 organiza-
tions presented wreaths in honor of Cap-
tain Carranza. Our own Tabernacle Boy
Scout Troop 439, Cub Scout Pack 439, Com-
mitteeman Joe Barton and yours truly rep-
resented our township. We joined the oth-
ers as we each individually presented our
wreaths to the American Legion honor
guard.
Captain Carranza was known as the
Mexican Lindbergh. As we heard it ex-
plained to us, he had just completed the
third longest non-stop flight by any aviator
up to that time. Only Charles Lindberg had
flown further. The two fliers were good
friends and worked to encourage good will
between our respective nations. Carranza
had come to New York and was awaiting a
good weather report before his return to
Mexico City.
But for some, yet clearly unexplained
reason, he left in the worst possible weath-
er conditions. He may have been ordered

Remains taken to Chatsworth
by his superiors to leave imme-
diately or have his manhood
questioned. Whatever the rea-
son, he only made it to the area
traveled by the Blue Comet
(railroad buffs will understand
that reference) and inhabited by
box turtles and rattle snakes. His
plane broke apart and was scat-
tered amid those bull pines.
The American Legion will say
their search party found his re-
mains. In fact, part of their cere-
mony recreated their assertion.
However local pineys will tell
you a blueberry picker made the
discovery. And that once Emilios
last remains were taken to
Buzbys Store in Chatsworth, the
American Legion became in-
volved. To some the factual histo-
ry will be important, but for all of
us we should recall why this
flight was made and how two in-
ternational aviators had world
harmony in their hearts. Its a les-
son so few world leaders today
have learned.
