Much has happened at Andretti and much is on the horizon. The fall promises afternoons and evenings of wine pairings with seasonal desserts, experiences of Dolce in Vigneto. Locally acclaimed pastry chef Penelope Jane will be crafting regional favorites such as fall stone fruit bars and harvest pies to marry with an exquisite range of Andretti dessert wines. Dolce in Vigneto will conclude on February 14, 2013, Valentines Day, with hand-made chocolate truffles. What a sweet conclusion.

BY MIKE HYLAND Gerret and Tatiana Copeland
BOUCHAINE VINEYARDS Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 1075 Buchli Station Road, Napa, CA 94559 (707) 252-9065 | www.bouchaine.com
Located on the Napa side of the popular Carneros winegrowing region, Bouchaine Vineyards is the oldest continually operated winery in Carneros. The site, not far from San Pablo Bay, was first planted with orchards and vines in the middle 1800s by pioneer Boon Fly (some of you may have eaten at his namesake caf just up the road a bit). In 1927, nearing the end of the Prohibition era, the property was purchased by Johnny Garetto, an Italian immigrant, and after the repeal he operated what is believed to be the first winery with a tasting room in the region. Garetto sold the winery to Beringer Brothers in 1951, who would utilize the winemaking facilities and make the necessary upgrades along the way. In 1981, Tatiana and Gerret Copeland, a successful business couple from Wilmington, Delaware, heard that the property was on the market and investigated the situation. I was on a business trip in Los Angeles, says Tatiana Copeland, recalling her first visit to what the Copelands would call Bouchaine in 1981. My husband called me to say that a Napa winery was for sale. I flew up that afternoon, put on my CPA hat, asked a myriad of questions and looked around. There were two very dilapidated buildings, lots of bare earth and no vines. However, the beauty of Carneros captured my imagination. The two dilapidated buildings that were photographed by Mrs. Copeland on that visit are presently on display in the Bouchaine tasting room. Long-time admirers of the wines of Burgundy, the Copelands plan was to add vineyards and continually make upgrades while building the Bouchaine name. In 1995, a massive renovation was completed, updating the winemaking facility with new technology and refurbishing the entire facility, blending in with the environment, and garnering numerous awards from historic, architectural, and
22
most importantly, agricultural organizations. Bouchaines day-to-day activities are handled by winemaker and general manager Mike Richmond and production and sales boss Greg Gauthier both industry veterans who have amassed years of experience in every phase of the winegrowing/winemaking process. Coming to Bouchaine Vineyards is the culmination of my life in wine, says Mike Richmond. Everything Ive learned over the last 30some years comes to bear. We are committed to creating great wines, growing ultra-premium grapes and offering a wonderful experience in every bottle of wine we make. The Carneros region, which spans both Sonoma and Napa valleys, is a prime growing area for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, and the Bouchaine estate is home to the southernmost vineyards of the region. With 16,000 cases of wine produced each year, 7,000 cases are Pinot Noir. We make our wines to partner with good food, says Greg
Gauthier. When I eat, I enjoy my meal with a great bottle of wine. To me, wine flavors combine like musical notes, forming chords and developing harmonious tones or themes. The flavors of the wine blend together until the composition completes itself with layers of sensory satisfaction. The Bouchaine staff likes to hit the road presenting special wine dinners all across the country. We take pride in the wine that we make and we want to be sure it is always properly presented. To that end, we enjoy heading out a few times each month to new cities and making new friends along the way, and of course, tasting and talking about our wines. Venture out into the Carneros countryside and stop in at Bouchaine for a tasting. Youre likely to meet both Mike and Greg and on occasion, maybe even the Copelands. Its a big, down-to-earth family in a beautiful location, and of course great estate wines. It doesnt get any better.

PEJU PROVINCE WINERY 8466 Saint Helena Highway, Rutherford, CA 94573 (707) 963-3600 | www.peju.com Connect with Peju on Facebook and Twitter!
Peju does an amazing job of taking a visitor from the motorway attitude of Highway 29 to the serenity and ease of their way. Here, you will forget that the surrounding Valley exists at all while the winery team presents a world unto itself and tasting experiences unlike anything else in the Valley. Originally founded in 1982 by Tony and Herta Peju on thirty acres in Rutherford, Peju is now also the responsibility of daughters Lisa and Ariana and has expanded its reach to include the Persephone Ranch in Pope Valley and the Wappo Vineyard in eastsides Dutch Henry Canyon, too. Thirty years in, the entire family is deeply committed to sustainable farming practices to ensure that the land will be preserved for future generations. Pejus H.B. Vineyard in Rutherford is certified organic while the Persephone Ranch and Wappo Vineyard are sustainably farmed; Ariana Peju launched the Harvesting of the Sun project by taking Peju solar in 2006. To date, 720 panels have been installed over 10,000 square feet of the winerys roof, generating 36% percent of the winerys needs. In 2009, Peju was certified as a Napa County Green Winery and Bay Area Green Business, and Tony even offered cash incentives for staff to switch to electric vehicles. The winery is well known for its highly regarded bottlings of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and several

The Wine and The Experiences Just Keep Getting More Memorable
BY JOSH STEIN
RAYMOND VINEYARDS Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 849 Zinfandel Lane, St. Helena, CA (707) 963-3141 | www.raymondvineyards.com
Raymond has been well known for great wines, but they have not always been known for their presentation of those wines. When the Boisset family bought the property, they did so precisely because of their respect for the people, the effort and the time that has been invested in the stewardship of the land and the resulting wines. This philosophy of preserving what works while adding what can make it work better goes to the heart of the current Raymond Vineyards hospitality transformation and its explosion of consumercentric tasting experiences and wide-ranging wine options even mans best friend hasnt been forgotten! Raymond Vineyards became part of the Boisset Family Estates collection of wineries in 2009 with the expressed goal of rejuvenating the estate and propelling it forward into its fifth decade and beyond. The estates eighty-one Rutherford acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc; ten acres of Cabernet Sauvignon are just north of the winery in St. Helena. An additional 210 acres of rolling hillsides are planted to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc along Jameson Canyon in the southeastern edge of Carneros fog and San Pablo Bay breezes, perfect conditions for white grape cultivation. Raymond has introduced a variety of new tasting options and events to accommodate a range of lifestyles and experiences, or as theyll tell you when you visit, Theres something for everyone. If youre looking for the classic American tasting room experience, the Main Tasting Room presents Raymond favorites, stellar Cabernets and a number of seasonal, winery-only releases. If youre looking to see how great Napa Cabernet ages, the Library Rooms access to a private tasting experience is the place to be. If youre into the presentation of wine and wine service, of how aeration, particularly in Baccarat decanters, has an impact on whats in the glass, then the Crystal Cellars Crystal Experience is something not to be missed. The options dont end there, however. The Barrel Room, candlelit and intimate, is available to host small groups, allowing for barrel-sampling of wines prior to bottling a very unique way of gaining some winemaker insight. The Rutherford Room shows off fifteen of the Napa Valley subappellations, and the Blending Rooms focus is on creating wines greater than their parts. On the flip side, if the

enjoyment of wine as part of your exclusive, excitement-filled life sounds more like you, the Red Room presents a distinctive Napa Valley winery experience. Now open for tastings, the Red Room focuses on the upper echelon of the Raymond portfolio including the Red Room Red Wine and library vintages. Equally, the Grove presents plenty of family friendly activities that showcase wine country life: croquet, badminton, basketball, bocce and ptanque. Not to be outdone, the two-acre Theater of Nature uses plant and animal life to explain the natural winegrowing philosophy in action around you on the property; it foregrounds how all the actors in the system play a crucial part in crafting quality wine, from the soil to the vineyardist to larger forces such as the lunar cycle. Appropriately, there are many different styles of wines now being released by the winery, all done with the goal of giving the consumer lots of great options. Generations is the flagship wine, made from the best lots of each vintage, and the 2008 was just released; its not to be missed as this is the first collaboration between winemakers Stephanie Putnam and Philippe Melka. The District Collection offers Cabernets from different areas in the Valley, including Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena. The Small-Lot Collection provides 50- to 500- case bottlings of barrelfermented Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Zinfandel and Red and White Meritages. The
Reserve series provides extended aged releases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The Barrel to Barrel provides a miniature three liter wine barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon for easy and extended by-the-glass enjoyment. Last but certainly not the least, Raymond has opened Frenchie Winery, designed with the 46 million dog owners in the U.S. in mind and named for proprietor Jean-Charles Boissets gift of a French bulldog to his wife. Frenchie Winery, hosted physically within Raymonds Theater of Nature, provides five kennel spaces featuring portraits of Frenchie as various historical icons. Overhead is a Barkarrat chandelier, illuminating the water-dispensing dogs tasting bar. While at Raymond you can taste these newly released Frenchie wines: the 2009 Napoleon Red Wine and the 2009 Louis XIV Cabernet Sauvignon. Still need an excuse to come visit? How about the crazy good times of the winerys icon Crystal Costume Ball on October 27th? Given all this winery is now capable of, think about how good those times will be and make your plans now. The truth is, whether you are looking for that special day or not, your time at Raymond Vineyards will be most memorable, and youll want to keep coming back to see what will happen next. There is so much to taste and experience, youll want to plan your time in the Valley around your visit to the winery. Enjoy!

Experience the restored Redwood Cellar, built in 1872, and relive an era that preserves the strong historical roots of fine winemaking. Today, the Charles Krug Winery offers a tasting room that is rustic and welcoming, where wine lovers can feel at home tasting the finest varietal wines Krug creates. The Redwood Cellar, (for private barrel tastings) is a beautiful majestic stone building with 80 windows, a gabled roof and an impressive belvedere, located across from the picnic area. What stands out at Charles Krugs Winery is the personal attention the staff gives their customers. The staff is knowledgeable, relaxed yet, focused on those who love to sip and savor Krugs delicious wines. They speak highly of their limited releases, their light and fruity 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, as well as their full bodied, 2008 X Clones Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, just to name a few. Vintage photos line the walls, showcasing the Mondavis devotion to the winerys history. Now, the Mondavi family is proud to announce the next phase of the 1872 Redwood Cellar restoration project slated to open in fall 2013. They are excited to be working with Napa Valley architect Howard Backen who is renowned for preserving a sites natural and original aesthetics. Im thrilled to be working with the Peter Mondavi family on the historic Charles Krug Winery. Its a wonderful opportunity to transform one of the original pieces of Napa Valley architecture and to learn about the winemaking roots of the Valley, said Backen. The new hospitality center, including the tasting room, will be inside the historic Redwood Cellar totaling 11,000 square feet. The new tasting room will feature stunning views of the Family Reserve barrel room, a lofty ceiling and a towering 9,000-gallon vintage redwood tank. The room will include tasting bars and intimate table seatings. The mezzanine level will feature wine lounges for wine club members, and reserve tastings and events. In addition, a history museum including artifacts that showcase the 150 years of Napa Valley winemaking is also planned. There will also be a delicatessen for picnics with views of Mount St. Helena. So, the legacy continues. Dont miss their grand opening in the fall of 2013, when the magnificently restored Redwood Cellar will open to the public. In the meantime, enjoy Charles Krugs current tasting room where past times and fine wines are preserved in the hearts, minds and palettes of wine enthusiasts everywhere!

When you are in Sonoma Countys beautiful Dry Creek Valley, stop in for a visit at Fritz Underground Winery, where youll find some beautiful scenery, impressive architecture and positively transcendent wines. The winery sits above 120 lush, rolling acres of estate grounds complete with redwood forests, water features and, of course, vineyards. Just a short hike up from the parking lot, youll find the super cool underground winery and tasting room. The state-of-theart building was constructed in the 1970s in the modernist style of famed Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. The winery features a subterranean design that keeps the cellar at ideal temperatures for winemaking and wine storage year-round, and a gravity-flow production facility that allows fruit to be processed on the crushpad above the winery and gently fed by gravity to the cellar below. The proof of the Fritz commitment to quality is showcased in a couple of great tasting flights available in the tasting room. For $10, try a flight of six well-priced, well-made wines including a wonderfully satisfying Estate Zinfandel. If you dont know much about Dry Creek Valley, the first thing to know is that its home to some of the greatest Zinfandels in the state. The Fritz version is made in the signature Dry Creek Valley style of deep, brambly blackberry fruit and spice. Theres also a reserve flight available at Fritz for $15. Notable on the reserve list is the 2009 Russian River Valley Reserve Pinot Noir, which shows aromatics so vivid its hard to take your nose out of the glass. Equally seductive is the 2009 Reserve Zinfandel, a richer, more opulent version of the Estate Zinfandel. Theres also some great scenery to take in at Fritz. Bring along a picnic lunch or some sandwiches, grab a cold bottle of crisp Sauvignon Blanc or delicious Chardonnay and take your pick of sunny spots by the winery or down near the shimmering pond, where you may just find yourself dining alongside a Great Blue Heron. Fritz has teamed up with Salt Side Down Chocolates to offer a truly unique tasting experience, the Artisan Chocolate and Reserve Wine Pairing. For $35 youll get to try four handmade artisan truffles expertly paired with four of Fritzs exceptional reserve wines. Youll learn how to expertly taste wine and chocolate like a pro while indulging in rare heirloom cacao dark chocolate, local organic infusions, and terroir driven wines. This unique experience is available without appointment through fall.

St. Francis Winerys Third Annual Stars Under the Stars Film Festival
Silver Screen icons and Stellar Wines al Fresco
Pioneer of Sonoma County winemaking St. Francis Winery launched their third annual wine paired outdoor film festival. Curated by celebrity sommelier and film aficionado Christopher Sawyer, the festival kicked-off July 12, featuring classic films alongside St. Francis signature award-winning wines. On August 2, Mamma Mia starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth will be shown, with The Cork Pullers providing the pre-show entertainment. On August 9, jazz fusion musicians Tumbao perform and Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell provide the laughs as Groundhog Day graces the 30' outdoor screen. The festivals August 16th finale will feature 1999 Academy Award winner American Beauty, starring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. The films masterful combination of dark humor and psychological drama earned the movie five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. National recording artist Nat Keefe of Hot Buttered Rum will perform prior to the film. Seating on the lawn begins at 7 p.m. with a pre-show concert and wine reception, followed by an independent short film selection from The San Francisco 48 Hour Film Project. Feature films begin at dusk. Guests are welcome to bring low-backed lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic. However, alcohol brought from offsite is strictly prohibited. Sawyer will host a short discussion of the evenings film and wine
pairing immediately after an introduction made by St. Francis Winery CEO and President Christopher Silva. Great movies and elegant wines transport us to another place and time...all the more so under the sky and the stars on a summer night in Sonoma, asserts Silva. There is no charge for attending and the popcorn is FREE! Wine by the glass, food and sweets will be available for purchase. St. Francis Visitors Center & Tasting Room is at 100 Pythian Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95409 and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 1-888-675-WINE (9463) or go to www.stfranciswinery.com

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

Jaxon Keys Winery & Distillery
BY CHARLES NEAVE
At Jaxon Keys Winery & Distillery, set in the rolling hills of the Mendocino Wine Country, their mantra is to honor the past as they shape the future. One obvious and charming example is the carefully restored farmhouse, built in 1880 and set on their 1250-acre estate. The property also houses their always-casual and friendly tasting room. If expansive views are what you are after, you can enjoy wine on the wraparound porch. As part of one of Northern Californias most respected collection of wineries, the family-owned and operated Wilson Family Artisan Wines, takes pride in every aspect of their winemaking operation and their highly regarded vineyards. To ensure that the quality continues to get even better with every vintage, UC Davis graduate Fred Nickel joined Jaxon Keys in 2009 as winemaker. This follows a breadth of experience making wine in the region for almost three decades, and the Wilsons are confident that his Mendocino County winemaking pedigree will enhance the Wilson Family legacy, one that began in bordering Sonoma County. I have learned I am not so much a Winemaker, more like a Director of Wine Steering. A Wine Whisperer I guess you could call it, Nickel has said. After so many years in the area, I know how the grapes grow around here, he adds. Its a different world up here, and because this is an estate property we work with a double-edged sword. On one side you have complete control over the grapes; on the other side you are limited to using those grapes. But in the end I let the grapes do what the grapes want to do, and so far the wines have been well-received, which is the goal. It is not an overstatement to say that Jaxon Keys has a wine for everyone. They include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Grenache, Zinfandel, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Meritage, plus a Farmhouse Red and a Farmhouse White. There is also Assemblage, a red blend of Zinfandel, Syrah and a touch of Grenache. The Jaxon Keys distillery also houses a 15th century Alambic pot still that produces acclaimed brandies under the Jepson label. There are three separate tiers altogether, including the single-vineyard estate bottled Rare; the distinctive Old Stock aged seven to ten years in French oak barrels; and the elegant Signature Reserve, a blend of 20- to 25-year-old reserve stocks. Jaxon Keys hosts special events throughout the year, or you can host your own. They also have a spacious guest house available.
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 10400 South Highway 101, Hopland, CA 95449 1-877-462-0666 | www.jaxonkeys.com Become a fan on Facebook

Music and wine lovers can have the both of best worlds by tasting musically inspired wines with live music by the singer/winemaker who goes by the name: The Singing Winemaker (aka Steve Powell). Steves signature wines are his red varietals but he offers every type of wine ranging from Dolcissimo, a musical term meaning very sweetly for a Cabernet Sauvignon blush; a white Scherzando, (musical term for playful) for his, light summer white wine; a tawny Port; a late harvest Zin dessert wine along with peach, raspberry and almond sparkling wines. We focus on red but provide wine for all palates, there is something in the tasting room for everyone, he said. We have great wines and the best wine tasting experience. The Singing Winemaker has not released a new red wine in a year, so this summer he is back in action, releasing six wines. Each will have a release party during the summer with wine and food pairings for guests and of course, music for every age and taste performed by The Singing Winemaker. Many of his wines have musical names including his Harmony blend made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Old Vine Zinfandel. The Singing Winemakers popular Melody which is a blend of Malbec and Tempranillo is always a crowd pleaser along with another favorite, Amador County Barbera, which is a robust Italian varietal.

Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group Gourmet Grazing on the Green Food & Wine Festival To Be Held on September 15
The 9th annual Gourmet Grazing on the Green, a fabulous festival featuring the best local food, wine and beer, supports the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group. The Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people living with cancer in the Santa Cruz community. Working with a dedicated group of volunteers and partners the organization raises community consciousness through events and outreach and provides vital financial support for several Santa Cruz beneficiary organizations including Hospice of Santa Cruz, Jacobs Heart Childrens Cancer Association and University of California at Santa Cruz. Held at beautiful Aptos Village Park on Saturday, September 15th from 12 to 5 p.m., Grazing on the Green is a fun-filled day of fine wine, excellent food, locally crafted beers and live music! Spend the afternoon sampling the delicious flavors from dozens of the finest local restaurants and local wineries as well as breweries. Also, Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group is honored to welcome attendees to meet and greet the Beneficiaries who are our special guests at the event. Beneficiaries include Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacobs Heart Childrens Cancer Association, Katz Cancer Resource Center, WomenCARE Cancer Advocacy and University of California at Santa Cruz. Ticket prices include food, wine and beer tastings all day. Plus a wine glass. By purchasing a $65 ticket to this food and wine festival, attendees are raising funds for the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group (SCCBG) while getting to attend a fun day for foodies and winelovers. There will be a huge selection of Santa Cruz restaurants and local wineries and breweries that are participating in the 2012 event as well as local farmers who have donated produce for the Gourmet Grazing event; this list includes Coke Farms, Route One, Earthbound Farms, New Natives and Watsonville Coast Produce. Tickets include admission to the event, special souvenir wine glass, and a day of food, wine and beer tasting. Purchase tickets online or at local New Leaf Markets. If you know a few people who want to attend, take advantage of group discounts: 10 tickets for $500. SCCBG has funded cancer research and local groups including many that support people living with cancer since 1995. SCCBG was started by a small group of friends who used to play tennis together once a week; they had each lost a relative or friend to cancer and wanted to do something to make a difference. The first event the organization hosted was a Spring Forward Against Cancer Tennis Tournament and Celebration; these tournaments are still held each year. Proceeds from this years Gourmet Grazing benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacobs Heart Childrens Cancer Support and Services, The Katz Cancer Resource Center, UC Santa Cruz Cancer Research and WomenCARE. Participating restaurants include Caf Cruz, Chaminade Resort & Spa, Hulas Island Grill, Beast BBQ, Johnnys Harborside, Shadowbrook Restaurant, The Whole Enchilada and Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine. Participating wineries and breweries include Alfaro Family Vineyards, Kathryn Kennedy Winery, Beauregard Vineyards, Muccigrosso Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, Seabright Brewery, Sones Cellars and Vino Tabi.
