Research Collection/Check List

Line project: Objectives: To understand how trends occur in naturally and best fit lines are a tool to be used to make knowledgeable predictions. You will be researching a topic of interest and using Excel to show your trend. In a final paper, you will gather all of the knowledge you have required and write a formal and wise prediction based off of the trends and facts you learned. Checklist: Pick a topic of interest What is the topic/trend will be analyzing? ________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ What is your previous knowledge on this topic? _______________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Do you have any predictions about this trend?_________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Identify the main criteria/variables that you will use to identify the trend and explain why you chose to look at that particular criteria. For example, with global warming, I could use winter average temperatures over the last 50 years and the summer average temperatures over the last 50 years. It would give me the ability to see what is happening to our temperatures over a long range time period during our extreme seasons. I also know they keep record of these averages.

Find at least three resources. Record and organize the data you found at these resources on the attachments A “First Source Research Facts”, B “Second Source Research Facts”, and C “Third Source Research Facts.” ON ONE OF THESE SHEETS, YOU NEED TO HAVE INCLUDED NUMERICAL DATA. Go to http://www.internet4classrooms.com/excel_scatter.htm for instructions on how to use Excel to make a scatter plot given the criteria you chose to study. Enter your data into a table using Excel Create a scatter plot Print out your scatter plot Use your print out and calculate a best fit line manually Use Excel to calculate a best fit line and print out the scatter plot with the Excel best fit line *** You should have TWO printouts of scatter plots with best fit line equations: One with a line you drew and calculated the equation for AND one Excel created and calculated the equation.

Use Attachment E “Outline Guide” to brainstorm and check off components of making this paper effective and successful. Use your research and outline to ensure you have included all essential components to making a successful, factual formal analysis paper.

Attachment D “Outline Guide” Your paper grade will be graded as indicated below. Make sure you take time on each of these components below. Use this guide as a checklist to help you write the final, formal paper. Analysis Paper: Total worth /36 pts (4 pts) Formality (no errors and nicely organized) (4 pts) Index Parts (4 pts) Proposal (2 pts) Criteria of Study Body of Evidence (2 pts) Trend and link to equation model (3 pts) Scatter plot with best fit line included and referenced in paper (2 pts) Percent change calculation (2 pts) Prediction based off of model (2 pts) Other facts concerning your prediction (2 pts) Analysis of Outliers (4 pts) Conclusions/ Predictions (4 pts) Analysis of Project/ Problems you had and what you learned (4 pts) Works Cited Proposal: This is your opening to your paper. Within this paragraph or two, the reader gains an understanding about what the whole paper will be about. A thesis statement will be made here stating your trend and your prediction. Criteria of Study: This is the conditions or variables you analyzed in order to show a trend. Write down these conditions and why they were appropriate and relevant pieces of evidence for your prediction. Project Schedule
Day 1: Transition from Cell Phone Linear Project to Best Fit lines on Scatter Plots. Another application of linear equationsbest fit lines. Presentation and Notes on scatter plots, best fit line, and trends. Homework: book assignment & come up with various trends in society/nature Day 2: Compile and brainstorm different trends people can think of. Hand out information and walk through research of trend project. Students pick topics based off of homework. Day 3: Begin Research Day 4: Research day 2 Day 5: Research day 3 Day 6: Outline writing time (there is a an outline handout to fill out) Day 7: Paper writing time Day 8: Paper writing time Day 9 Paper and research process due- Start review over Linear Equation Unit Ideas for trends that may come up in brainstorm
