Saline police arrest U-M running back

University of Michigan starting running back Fitzgerald Toussaint has been indefinitely suspended after an arrest Saturday night for operating a vehicle while impaired in Ann Arbor. As of the newspapers deadline Monday afternoon, he had not been arraigned on any charges. The Saline Police

Department arrested Toussaint at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Detective Don Lupi said. He said Saline officers were working on a special Toussaint enforcement detail in Ann Arbor alongside other local police departments. The detail, which targeted drunken drivers, allows

arrests outside of the departments jurisdiction. Police stopped Toussaint for a traffic violation and during the roadside investigation it was determined he possibly had been driving under the influence, Lupi said. He said officers administered field sobriety tests and a breath test, which showed

Toussaints blood-alcohol content was above the legal driving limit of 0.08 percent. The arrest was reportedly made in the downtown area, but no further details were available Monday afternoon. Toussaint was transported to the Saline Police Department and was held there until he was released Sunday morning, Lupi said. He said the case against Toussaint has been for-

warded to the Washtenaw County prosecutors office for authorization of possible charges for operating under the influence. New police chief Hrinik settles in

Saline Police Chief Larry Hrinik is now on his fourth week on the job after being sworn in July and he is becoming more familiar with the position. Just recently there was a calm moment where he said to himself: Im really enjoying myself here. I feel good about the position. Hrinik is excited to be working with the Saline Police Department, he said. Hes now met all the fulltime officers and dispatchers on the different shifts, he said, and is impressed with how they handle themselves. They do an excellent job, he said. I think Saline is fortunate to have them. Hrinik said he looks forward to continuing the leadership from Mike Lindman who stepped in temporarily as interim police chief following the retirement of former police chief Paul Bunten. He wants to continue to make sure things are done right, he said. Thats certainly my goal: To make sure things

run smoothly, Hrinik said. He believes residents will find him to be accessible and visible in the community. The new police chief took some time recently to sit down with The Saline Reporter to talk about his experience and background. In February, Hrinik retired from the Davison Township Police Department after serving a little more than 18 years as its chief. After that, it wasnt long before he decided to look for a new position because he said he likes the work and he likes interacting with people through it. My whole life was law enforcement and I wasnt quite ready to let it go, Hrinik said. I wasnt ready to say goodbye. He learned of the position in Saline and began the interview process that went through multiple stages and lasted about four months, and in the end he was the citys choice to lead the department. Local art students now have a chance to display their hard work at an area exhibit. Art created by students taking classes at the Two Twelve Arts Center in Saline is now on display

through August as part of the Adult Student Art Show. The exhibit at 216 W. Michigan Ave. features works created by those taking classes at the center within the past year. Pieces include watercolor, colored pencil, fiber art, pottery, photography,

paper weaving, portraiture, acrylic, sculpture, encaustic, mosaics and jewelry. Events coordinator Gaines Collins said people should come to the exhibit because it shows what we are all about and what we

Board hears about benets of form-based zoning

growth. Pittsfield Township is joining other communities in the area in exploring what form-based codes can do for them in controlling growth that is beneficial,
