A novel low-calorie bulk sweetener
Modern and healthy lifestyles call for food products that go different ways in sweetening. Enjoyable sweetness without excess sugar is what todays health conscious consumer is looking for. But the preservation of the original taste of an indulgent confectionery or a flavourful ice cream in a reduced sugar version, sets high requirements on the sweetener to be used. Many alternatives to sugar exist but very few can take on all the different aspects of sugar in food and drinks. Only one delivers on both, technological properties and health benefit and ebbs the way to new, more healthy sweetness: ERYLITE


ERYLITE is a bulk sweetener with minimal caloric content but full sugar taste and it is Jungbunzlauers solution for modern sugar reduction. This sweetener, commonly known as erythritol, appears as white crystalline powder and is approximately 50% as sweet as sugar. It is made by Jungbunzlauer through yeast fermentation. This type of production process and the raw materials used for the process (carbohydrate substrates) qualify ERYLITE to be the first and only natural polyol. It also occurs naturally in a wide variety of foods, including many fruits and mushrooms, as well as in fermented foods such as cheese, wine and beer. Amongst other benefits, ERYLITE s has a unique metabolic profile. It is a 4 carbon sugar alcohol (polyol) with a very small molecular weight. Proven through scientific studies this enables ERYLITE to be absorbed in the small intestine by more than 90%. The remaining fraction of less than 10% reaches the large intestine where it is partially metabolised to yield only about 5% or less of usual carbohydrate calories. This unique property also gives ERYLITE the highest digestive tolerance of all polyols. This is especially important because it is non-laxative at typical polyol consumption levels. Its beneficial effects both on the physiological and sensory side make ERYLITE play an increasingly important role in the fight against obesity: it is suitable for diabetics and fits the trend for natural products and healthy life style.



Nutritional and Physiological Properties

Adults ingesting up to 1g ERYLITE per day and per kg body weight do not show any gastrointestinal effects. is non-cariogenic and toothfriendly. Oral bacteria produce acids by breaking down sugars and starches, which may lead to tooth enamel loss and cavity formation. ERYLITE is resistant to metabolism by oral bacteria and helps to formulate food products eligible to toothfriendly labelling

Application Areas
ERYLITE can be applied in a wide variety of sugar-free, reduced-sugar and low-calorie foods, such as:

beverages (not approved in the EC) chocolates ice cream yoghurt bakery confectionary & gums sugar substitutes/table-top sweeteners sauces & condiments (not approved in the USA)

Safety and Regulatory Status

ERYLITE is safe under conditions of its intended use. This is substantiated by human and animal safety studies. ERYLITE is fully approved in the European Union since February 2008. It may be used for sweetening as well as for other purposes as laid down in the approving Directive 2006/52/EC. The quantum satis principle applies for the majority of applications. In the USA, ERYLITE was affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) already in 1997. The affirmation states intended use as flavour enhancer, sweetener, humectant etc. and lists several maximum use levels. In Japan ERYLITE is approved since 1990. It is treated as food and not as an additive and thus has no restrictions of use. ERYLITE is also approved in a growing number of countries like Canada, Australia/New Zealand, The Philippines and others.
