Executive summary

Introduction
In today business world caring for sustainability is an integral part of every companys corporate values. Sustainability has spreads over 3 dimension call as economic, environment and social sustainability. The success of the sustainability always adds a value and good image to the company brand name. NDB is committed to sustainable development and the responsible stewardship of resources. This means developing solutions that link economic success with social responsibility, which requires balancing short and long term goals and interests and integrating economic , environmental and social considerations to business decisions across the board. So through this report Department of Sustainability and CSR tries to express about sustainability initiative which have been taken by NDB bank in past three years with the sequence improvements of them. All the information are based on NDB bank s annual reports of three years and company web site.

Environmental sustainability
To maintain the environmental sustainability NDB Bank have to comply with both internal and external ethics of it. Hear NDB involves with identifying, assessing and seeking to reduce the bad direct and indirect environmental impacts of Bank s services.

Initiatives
Energy saving measures

Mindful of its carbon footprint, NDB Bank has taken measure to neutralize and minimize its adverse impact on the environment. As a service oriented organization, reduction of energy consumption could be identified as being the most significant contribution towards reducing our Carbon Footprint.NDB Bank has taken several measures to minimize energy consumption. Consequent to carrying out a comprehensive Energy Audit, improvements were effected in the areas of lighting and air conditioning. Waste reduction recycling

NDB Bank talks about 3R s, of waste management Reduce, Re use, Recycle. NDB promotes a paperless culture by encouraging employees to use electronic communications, on line approvals and other web based applications.

NDB is successfully reach waste reduction and recycling drive through the collection of old record and waste papers of the bank. Through that bank was able to save amounts from resources which are shown by the Figure 1.

NDB is in collaboration with M/S Neptune papers (PVT) Ltd, makes every effort to collect the waste paper generated in our day to day operations for recycling. Promotes paperless culture -This was promoted by employees are encourage to use electronic communication online approvals and other web based application during 3 years. And also in 2011 NDB introduced automatic document workflow under this.

Environmentally friendly lending methods -NDB Bank promoted E-friends loan schemes which are used for pollution control during 3 years. This is specifically designed for pollution abatement and control. These loans are for purchasing equipment for end-of-pipe treatment, equipment which will bring to a lower production of waste by enterprises.

RERED project loan scheme

-In 2011, NDB promoted the Renewable Energy for Rural Economic Development Project loan scheme which promotes Renewable Energy to replace inefficient energy sources. Replacing inefficient energy with renewable energy sources contributes significantly to a sustainable environment.

Under this NDB does not give loans to industries which engage in illegal

activities, pollute the environment, have no proper pollution control methods, are involved in manufacturing and selling arms and those engage in activities that involve harmful or exploitative forms of forced labor and child labor. Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS)
Hear bank does a social and environmental risk analysis for borrowers

and take measures. Funding will proceed only if the identified risks are mitigated or minimized. Hear bank identifies only the environmental and social risks in the projects or companies. -Becoming one of the pioneering lenders to fund the country s first-ever commercial wind power project.

Social Sustainability
Caring for community has become a main category of NDB banks corporate values. Under this dimension NDB tries to add some worth to the community where their consumers are into build up as a bank their consumers and the place where their wok places are situated should be in a good life position. Then only can achieve the aim of Social sustainabilility.

Initiatives
Fundable initiatives NDB has introduced many funds for various parties who want a help of hand to live. That benefits for long term value adding for the lives of community. For that NDB launched below projects, in past 3 years continuously. -NDB Bank cancer Aid Trust Fund
To support cancer patients to fulfill their essential surgical and therapeutic

equipment such as surgical staplers, balloon dilators, Endobronchial Tubes and Hickmans lines which is an indwelling IV Clanual used to administer Chemotherapy to children suffering from cancer.This was a donation of 5.5 millions. -The prevention of child abuse trust

This is commited to help eradicate child abuse through awareness

programmes. This was launched from the year 2010 to by now. In 2010 a special rehabilitation program was also conducted titled Lets become
butterflies in the partnership with LEADS.

Other CSR Initiatives

These are the social works which were done by the NDB Bank staff all over the country on behalf of facilitating the community with infrastructures. This was a touch sight to see our staff come together as one family to reach out to the community.

2009

A library for the visually handicapped graduates of Sri Lanka. A library for Kadawatha Roman Catholic School. Refurbishing of library and improving sanitary conditions of Yudaganava Vidyalaya in Monaragala.

Refurbishing the Horagolla Kanishta Vidyalaya-Naaththandiya A laboratory for Doranagoda Maha Vidyalaya-Udugampola.

Mind building for Buddhist girls home Gampaha. Entrepretural skill development project for undergraduates UOC. Improving sanitary conditions of Meegoda Maha Vidyalaya. Awareness campaign about Thalassemia prevention programme at Wayaba Province. Library project with Asia foundation to donate English educational books to rural school.

2010 Entrepreneurship training session for school children who were selected from Anuradhapura and Gall.

Infrastructure improved at WP/KE sir D.B.Jayathilaka Vidyalaya,Kalaniya. Upgraded the Kadawatha Roman Catholic School. The Walpola Primary School was given Impetus to excel. Refurbishing the MICU of Lady Ridgeway Hospital Renovating Kuruppumulla Sri Parakrama Vidyalaya,Panadura. Vijaya Vidyalaya at Dehiwala gets a facelift. Provided a group of young Students training experience with IT giant Microsoft.

2011

Improving educational facilities at Kandana Dhamashoka Vidyalaya. Upgrading the facilities of Peliyagoda Roman Catholic Primary school.

30 students from Chundikuili Girls College and St Johns College,Jaffna were given an overview of the banking system in Sri Lanka. Its a skills development one day leadership programme.

Sponsoring Tsunami Orphans. Laboratory for S.D.S.Jayasinghe Vidyalaya Dehiwala. Upgrading facilities of the identified school in Hambanthota and Ambalantota. Library project in partnership with the Asia foundation. Enhancing English language teaching skill and knowledge project for government teachers.

Apart from above community engagements, there are some island wide project initiate during last three years. They are,

NDB partnered with EDEX to provide post-Tertiary higher educational opportunities for students by developing and maintaining the EDEX website.

Partnered with UOM launch of Sri Lanka 1st endowed professor/senior fellow entrepreneurship, which help to be job creators than job seekers.

Economic Sustainability
-NDB Bank is fully subscribes to the percept that in pursuing economic prosperity and profitability an enterprise must contribute to and enrich the sustainability of a border economic system involving the wide stakeholder community.

Financial impact
The Appendix 1 shows the economic value added and the distribution of EVA of NDB , in past three years from Sri Lankan rupees and Figure - 2 and Table - 1 show the distribution of value added as a percentage in past three years. Through that can get a quick review about the financial impact for the sustainability of NDB

So at last Department of sustainability and CSR S attempt was to show the sustainability initiatives which were done by NDB in past three years under 3 dimensions of environmental sustainability, social sustainability and economical sustainability. NDB thinks that all were able to get a good idea through this report about bank s sustainability initiatives.
