Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

The inverter industry is entering a very dynamic point in its history. It is undergoing an intense period of technological innovation, but also contention. Inverters are increasingly a focal point for investors, regulators, and project developers looking to find a balance between functionality, reliability, and safety. The increasing number of technical standards and requirements for connecting to the AC electric grid are formidable, but companies are, for the most part, rising to the challenge. Incumbent inverter manufacturers SMA, Fronius, Satcon, Power-One, KACO new energy, and Ingeteam have the advantage of size and market reach. However, disruptive technological innovation by well-funded startups and early-stage companies is rapidly changing the face of the industry. Many see microinverter technology as the future of distributed solar photovoltaics (PV), while others see it as the next step in a larger transition to fully-integrated AC modules. Against this backdrop of rapid technological change and a dynamic competitive landscape, the global inverter market will grow significantly over the next several years. This Pike Research report analyzes the global market opportunity for inverters in four key industry sectors: solar PV, stationary fuel cells, small wind, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) enabled electric vehicles. The report explores the key market drivers in each sector, along with an examination of technology issues and the evolving competitive landscape. Global market forecasts for inverter revenue and capacity are provided through 2017, segmented by application area and world region.

Renewable Energy Sources
Price USD 2500 PDF by E-mail (Single User License) USD 2550 Hard Copy Published by CARE Ratings

CARE Research expects the 12th Plan (2012-17) the renewable especially wind capacity addition to slowdown due to removal of tax benefit. However, wind capacity addition is likely to maintain its dominant share in the capacity addition. At present, the policy environment needs a boost to achieve as removal of Accelerated Depreciation (AD) scheme from April, 2012 is likely to act as dampener resulting into sharp slowdown in wind capacity addition in the 12th Plan. Moreover, solar capacity addition is purely RPO driven; hence institutional framework needs to be strengthened for higher and sustainable capacity addition run-rate. Finally, State level policy issues related to Small Hydro Power (SHP), Biomass, Co-generation, Waste-to-Energy (WtE) sectors need to be sorted out to improve 12th Plan capacity addition. With AD benefit removed, capacity addition to fall; IRR to shrink by 300-400bps AD benefit was removed from April 1, 2012, which was a major driver for wind installations in the 11th Plan. The country added 3.2GW of wind capacity in FY12 (last year of the 11th Plan), which is expected to fall sharply due to AD benefit removal. Consequently, CARE Research expects capacity addition to fall to sharply from FY13 onwards. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a notification on 30th March 2012, that the depreciation on wind mills will be restricted to 15% from the current financial year (with and additional 20% depreciation on equipments). This marks a significant change to the incentive structure as AD benefit typically increases project IRR by around 300-400bps, with other factors held constant. Thus, the industry would move strongly towards IPPs driven from a typical retail investor driven structure a few years ago.

Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors: Supercapacitors 2013-2023
Price USD 3995 Web Access (Five User License) USD 4250 Web Access (Five User License) and Hard Copy Published by IDTechEx Ltd.

This is the only report on supercapacitors and supercabatteries with up to date ten year forecasts and analysis of market, emerging applications, technology, patent and profit trends and the manufacturers and researchers involved. 55% of the manufacturers and intending manufacturers of supercapacitors/supercabatteries (EDLC, AEDLC) are in East Asia, 28% are in North America but Europe is fast asleep at only 7%. Yet, being used for an increasing number of purposes in electric vehicles, mobile phones, energy harvesting, renewable energy and other products of the future, this market is roaring up to over $11 billion in ten years with considerable upside potential. This report concerns Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs). For brevity, we mainly use the second most popular word for them - supercapacitors. The third most popular term for them - ultracapacitors - is often used in heavy electrical applications. Included in the discussion and forecasts are so-called Asymmetric Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (AEDLCs) better known as supercabatteries. Supercapacitors are a curiously neglected aspect of electronics and electrical engineering with a multi-billion dollar market rapidly emerging. For example, for land, water and airborne electric vehicles, there are about 200 serious traction motor manufacturers and 110 serious traction battery suppliers compared to just a few supercapacitor manufacturers. In all, there are no more than 66 significant supercapacitor manufacturers with most concentrating on the easier small ones for consumer electronics such as power backup. However, in a repetition of the situation with rechargeable batteries, the largest part of the market has just become the heavy end, notably for electric and conventional vehicles. Supercapacitors and supercabatteries mainly have properties intermediate between those of batteries and traditional capacitors but they are being improved more rapidly than either. That includes improvement in cost and results in them not just being used to enhance batteries but even replacing batteries and capacitors in an increasing number of applications from renewable energy down to microscopic electronics. For example, your mobile phone may have better sound and flash that works at ten times the distance because a supercapacitor has taken over these functions from conventional capacitors.

China Wind Power Industry and Market Forecast (2004-2015)
Price USD 3990 PDF by E-mail Published by SNE Research

The Chinese government began to support its wind power industry in 2005 to supply sufficient power throughout the country through introduction of renewable energy for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, cultivation of new growth engine industries and job creation, and distributed generation. With the unwavering support of the government, China has taken the lead in newly installed wind power capacity from 2009 to 2011. To protect its wind power industry, the Chinese government had established and implemented a ‘0% Home-Made ‘rule which required 70% of wind turbine installed by wind power projects of national enterprises should be domestically made from 2005 to 2009, and brought in an FIT system to facilitate wind power generation in 2007. With the quota system for domestic facilities and the FIT system, China has shown very fast growth in wind power installation from 0.2GW in 2004 to 18.9GW in 2010 and 17.6GW in 2011. In addition, the quota system for domestic facilities served a momentum of growth not only in the wind turbine industry but also in key component industries. As the Chinese government facilitated the growth in the domestic wind power turbine industry and key component industries to expand the domestic market, the prices of wind turbine prices dropped, which again paved the way for the growth in the wind turbine installation market. This recurring cycle has promoted the growth of the Chinese wind turbine installation market; the market has shown CAGR of 90.1% (GAGR of the global wind generation market is 25.6%) from 2004 to 2011.

Energy Efficiency Retrofits for Commercial and Public BuildingsHVAC, Lighting, Commissioning, Control Systems, Solar Energy, Water Management, Building Envelope, and ESCOs: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

The demand for energy efficiency retrofits in commercial and public buildings comes from many different sources. First and foremost is the desire to reduce the energy costs necessary to operate the structure. However, this motivation is not the only reason that energy efficiency retrofits are implemented. Many retrofits are undertaken through a sense of social responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon footprints, while others are done to try to retain tenants and gain a market edge in a competitive building market. Some retrofits are completed simply for the purpose of being able to label the building as being green or environmentally friendly. No matter what the motivation, energy efficiency retrofits are a rapidly growing market, the result of which will benefit the environment, building owners, tenants, and communities alike. The motivations of consumers and the influence of governments drive the demand for innovative new products to meet the needs of the owners of older buildings who wish to achieve energy savings through the use of building upgrades. This demand is met with a host of increasingly efficient products from suppliers of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, lighting, windows, insulation, control software, and countless other products. Industry participants warn that to achieve a successful retrofit, both in terms of cost and comfort, each building must be addressed as a unique situation. Trying to apply a one-size-fits-all solution across multiple structures is a common pitfall of the industry that results in less energy savings and unhappy building occupants.

Satellite Communications for Smart Grid Applications - VSAT and BGAN Satellite Technologies for Substation Automation, Distribution Automation, and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Backhaul
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

Over the past several years, smart grid initiatives around the world have focused largely on the deployment of smart meters. Increasingly, however, utilities worldwide are beginning to look at applications like substation automation, distribution automation, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) backhaul, remote monitoring, workforce mobility, and communications network redundancy. These applications are expected to bring dramatically improved operational efficiency to utilities as well as reliability to the grid. While substation and distribution sites in urban and suburban markets can be readily connected to the grid via existing terrestrial communications networks, in order to create a fully-automated, reliable grid, rural and remote sites must also be accommodated and backup systems need to be in place for critical sites. Thanks to a number of advances in both technical characteristics - latency, in particular - as well as a dramatic declines in pricing for both the equipment as well as monthly service, satellite communications is emerging as a viable and attractive means of connectivity for many smart grid applications, particularly as smart grid efforts move beyond developed, densely populated regions. Numerous satellite service providers and equipment manufacturers are now aggressively pursuing the utility market, a trend which should further the reduction in satellite service and equipment pricing even as bandwidth and connection speeds improve. This Pike Research report examines the economics and dynamics of satellite communications as it relates to smart grid deployments. The study provides an in-depth examination of market drivers, technology issues and standards, and the competitive landscape for smart grid networking. Detailed market forecasts are included for unit shipments and infrastructure and satellite service revenue, segmented by technology, application, and world region, through 2020.

High-Voltage Direct Current Transmission Systems - HVDC System Planning, Economic and Technology Issues, Market Drivers and Uncertainties, and Key Industry Players: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

Like much of the electricity grid, high-voltage transmission systems in service today rely on many of the same technologies that existed at their conception over 100 years ago. In the last 20 years, however, transmission technologies have benefited from a new stage of innovation. Today over two-thirds of new large-scale transmission systems planned or under construction are high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. HVDC systems are an essential component of grid buildouts to meet the growth in demand for electricity. Around the world, HVDC is being relied upon to integrate large amounts of intermittent renewable energy capacity, as well as rapid capacity expansions of bulk power transmission to meet vibrant economic growth in the developing world. HVDC systems are, by nature, very capital intensive and in many world regions they are driven by government programs. In other regions, planned HVDC systems are at the mercy of capital availability and balkanized regulatory frameworks. These factors, combined with the uncertainties of the global economy, lead Pike Research to the conclusion that there is likely to be a significant gap between the planned level of investment in HVDC systems and the investment level that will actually happen. Pike Research's analysis indicates that while the planned cumulative investment in HVDC amounts to nearly $220 billion through 2020, there is an 80% probability that the actual range of investment during that period will only be between $110 and $120 billion.

Spinning Reserves for the Grid - Coal Power Plants, Natural Gas Power Plants, Nuclear Power Plants, and Energy Storage Systems for Delivery of Spinning Reserves Services: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

Spinning reserves refer to an ancillary service with the purpose of providing online reserve capacity that is synchronized to the grid system and ready to meet electric demand within 10 minutes of a dispatch instruction by the grid operator. In more general terms, spinning reserves are reserves that are quick to come online and are typically used as bridge power to supply the grid with energy until longer-duration assets can come online. In the absence of spinning reserves, a system operator will typically shed load until the system is back in balance or slower ramping assets can come online. Systems that are especially constrained, such as power grids in Hawaii and India, operate in this manner. The spinning reserves market is highly specific to a grid system and depends on generation or load events. Grid systems are facing more instability as energy mixes change rapidly - particularly as intermittent renewable energy systems come online - and load profiles also become more unpredictable, especially in markets that are experiencing volatility in domestic or industrial load, such as China and Germany, respectively. Opportunities in the spinning reserves market will hinge on key market structures, which are also expected to change over time. This Pike Research report analyzes the global market for spinning reserves and forecasts the amount and revenue associated with this rapidly changing market using a scenario-based forecast. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the demand drivers, business models, policies, and technology issues associated with the spinning reserves market. Key industry players are profiled in depth and worldwide revenue and capacity forecasts, segmented by technology and region, extend through 2022.

Smart Grid Deployment Tracker 1Q12 - Global Smart Meter and Smart Grid Projects, Meter Data Management, Communications Networks, and Smart Grid Systems Integrators: Project Tracking, Vendor Selection Share, and Unit Shipments
Price USD 2900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 4350 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

Smart meter and smart grid deployments softened in 1Q 2012, with global meter shipments down sequentially by nearly 15%, according to Pike Research's Smart Grid Deployment Tracker. The decline was particularly noticeable in North America, where a rollout peak was reached last year, as we have noted before. The U.S. government's stimulus money, which had been an important driver of projects, has nearly run out, and many utilities have either finished projects or are starting to wind them down. Even China, which has been deploying meters at a frantic pace, showed signs of a smart grid slowdown as foreign suppliers noted trouble in the region. Still, China continues to deploy large volumes of devices, albeit at a slower pace. Despite the slowdown, some noteworthy deployments were announced during the quarter. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said it would begin rolling out 17 million smart meters in Japan through 2019. And in Spain, Iberdrola announced deals with seven meter manufacturers that will supply 1 million smart meters as part of the utility's initial rollout of devices through 2018. This Pike Research tracker report, updated quarterly, provides detailed analysis of worldwide utility smart grid and smart meter programs including tracking of customer endpoints, metering vendors, communications vendors, and systems integrators. The tracker includes a tactical examination of technologies, deployment timeframes, and vendor selections for each utility deployment, along with vendor market share analysis.

Renewable Biogas - Methane Recovery and Utilization in Landfills and Anaerobic Digesters: Municipal Solid Waste,Agricultural, Industrial and Wastewater Market Analysis and Forecasts
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

Biogas is a versatile energy carrier with potential to satisfy power and fuel demand across a range of end-use applications while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from a diverse array of organic waste streams. Raw biogas captured from landfills and distributed anaerobic digesters (AD) is widely utilized today across the urban and rural landscape as a fuel for electricity and heat generation. Upgraded biogas - biomethane or renewable natural gas (RNG) - is gaining traction as an alternative to fossil natural gas for gas-to-grid injection and as a vehicle fuel in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Biogas' flexibility, growing demand for waste treatment processes, and an increased focus on greenhouse gas mitigation are generating demand on a worldwide basis and in a variety of application areas, including municipal organic waste treatment, agricultural operations, industrial processing, and wastewater treatment. In particular, the use of bio-digesters to process manure and crop residues throughout Germany has demonstrated the potential for rapid deployment of biogas capture on a distributed basis. While landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) facilities are also widely deployed, the use of bio-digesters in industrial applications like food processing, breweries, and biofuels production is showing potential as a major growth area, while municipal organic waste and wastewater treatment are poised for significant growth across Asia Pacific. The global biogas industry still faces significant barriers to broad-based scale up, however, as lower natural gas prices, challenging economics, and project-to-project variability frustrate efforts to achieve economies of scale. As of 2012, biogas production accounted for only a fraction of natural gas production with bio-digester deployments concentrated primarily in Germany and landfill gas recovery confined mostly to advanced economies throughout North America and Europe.

Visiongain calculates the geothermal energy market to be worth $12.94bn in 2012. This includes spending on the construction of geothermal power plants used to produce electricity, and spending on the installation of geothermal heat pumps, district heating systems, and the other applications that make up the direct use geothermal submarket. Geothermal energy is a type of thermal energy generated and stored at accessible depths in the Earth's crust. It can either be used in power plants to produce electricity or used directly in a number of applications. In the first instance, the steam or vapour from reservoirs of hot water found a few miles or more below the Earth's surface are used to drive a turbine to produce electricity. In the second case, direct use geothermal systems use resources at lower temperatures than are required for most geothermal power plants. The applications tap hot underground water and distribute the heat through pipes for various uses, including district and space heating, greenhouse heating and aquaculture, among others. The geothermal energy market is likely to see significant investment over the next ten years, though growth will be unevenly spread throughout the world as each region is influenced by a diverse array of factors. This new report explains how the market will develop as a multi-billion dollar sector, revealing geothermal energy developments throughout the world and including regional or country specific forecasts and analysis for both the electricity and direct use parts of the market. This report covers all the major companies involved in the industry and includes the latest contract developments, newest partnerships and the most significant technological advances. Automated Demand Response - Technology and Business Issues, Opportunities, Challenges, the Competitive Landscape, and the Role of OpenADR: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

Demand response (DR) is becoming an increasingly important strategy for utilities to make sure that enough electricity is available on the grid to meet demand in order to avoid power outages. A critical development in this strategy is automated demand response (ADR) technology. This technology automates the notification process from the utility or grid operator notifying DR program participants to reduce or shift their energy use to actually implementing the predefined adjustments via control systems on their premises. ADR is gaining increasing attention in the market, especially with the use of open standards such as the OpenADR specification. Thanks to ADR, it is now possible for DR to evolve to the next level by reaching a broader end-user market with increased access to sophisticated and advanced types of program options, such as ancillary services. Although ADR has so far primarily been a U.S. phenomenon, it has recently been introduced to other countries, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. As pilot programs demonstrate the improved cost-effectiveness, predictability, reliability, and responsiveness of ADR, there is a high likelihood that the implementation of ADR will spread around the world - even in countries that have not yet embarked on conventional DR. Pike Research believes that these countries will leapfrog directly to ADR rather than spending years relying on a traditional and manual approach to DR. This Pike Research report examines the market opportunity for ADR technologies and services with a particular focus on the OpenADR specification. The study analyzes market drivers and technology issues associated with ADR adoption, in addition to a detailed review of deployment scenarios in different types of buildings. Key industry players are profiled in depth and global market forecasts, segmented by world region, are provided through 2018.

The Subsea Production & Processing Systems Market 2012-2022

The world has finite hydrocarbon resources and conventional oil reserves are increasingly in short supply. Furthermore, conventional oil resources from the Middle East are very much under threat of disruption as embargoes on Iranian oil exports come into full effect at the end of June 2012. However, new reservoirs of oil are increasingly being discovered in deep waters and ultra deep waters across the world. These new discoveries are providing a medium term respite to declining production from conventional sources of oil and gas, and reducing risks in upstream oil production from the Middle East. Visiongain has determined that the global capital expenditure in subsea production & processing systems infrastructure in 2012 will be $8.89bn. Exploration and production companies are investing heavily in offshore development projects. Most offshore projects in water depths beyond 200-300 metres benefit from subsea production and processing systems to lift hydrocarbons to the surface. As a greater share of oil and gas is supplied from deeper water depths, investment in subsea production and processing systems will grow larger over the next ten years. Subsea systems not only enable operating companies to optimise production from offshore fields, they also increase the total amount of recoverable hydrocarbons over the life of the well. For example, with pressure boosting systems, total oil recovery rates are significantly increased. Some deepwater oil and gas reservoirs would not have been fully exploited without the aid of subsea systems. By the early 1970s the world had few commercial oil and gas facilities producing from deepwater reservoirs because challenges such as high temperature and high pressure were too restrictive. Over the years, however, more advanced multiphase pumps, subsea oil/gas/water/sand separation units and wellhead systems have evolved to overcome the difficulties, enabling companies to produce hydrocarbons from the most challenging environments.

Ambient Energy Harvesters Market to 2016 - Replacement of Batteries for Low Power Applications Creates Growth Opportunities
Price USD 3500 PDF by E-mail (Single user license) USD 7000 PDF by E-mail (Site license) USD 10500 PDF by E-mail (Global license) Published by GBI Research

Ambient Energy Harvesters (AEHs) are unleashing the potential to harvest energy from the environment and may hold the potential to replace batteries in the future if technology can keep up, according to technology experts GBI Research. The new report* shows how harvesting can provide an emissions-free renewable power supply, harnessing solar, wind and thermal power to produce green energy. Ambient energy harvesting is primarily used when the installation and maintenance of application systems is problematic, due to the potential cost or practical difficulty of providing power or communication through the use of cables. Energy harvesting can be used almost anywhere, as, unlike batteries, no space is required, and there are no accessibility issues related to maintenance. Demand for energy harvesters is expected to grow with the development of low-power electronics, motivated by the increasing need for various applications to run efficiently, independently and remotely. A number of low power microcontrollers, digital signal processors, RF transceivers and sensors have already been developed, such as Texas Instruments' MSP430 microcontroller and Analog Devices Inc.'s ADXL345 ultra-low-power Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) sensor. However, further technological development is required to facilitate an efficient means of energy storage. Currently, energy can be stored either by using batteries or ultracapacitors. Due to their efficiency and superior lifetime, capacitors are increasingly preferred over batteries, but concerns about leakages limit their use over long periods. While a combination of batteries and capacitors can provide a safe and efficient harvesting system, the industry still lacks an innovative way to store harvested energy over prolonged lengths of time. Hybrid energy harvesters represent the next progression in the green energy industry. While energy produced by AEHs is limited, hybrid energy harvesters utilize multiple sources, such as light, heat and vibrations, to increase its energy generating potential. Demand for these can be expected to increase in the near future, but technology will still need to catch up. Until then, the AEHs market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.1% during 2012-2016.

High Temperature Capacitors: World Markets, Technologies & Opportunities: FY 2012-2017
Price USD 2500 PDF by E-mail (Single User License) Published by Paumanok Publications, Inc.

Forecasted changes in temperature requirements in defense and downhole pump electronics have challenged the capacitor industry to produce new products that can operate in exceedingly higher temperatures for longer time periods of time. For years the operating temperature and available capacitance values of competing high temperature dielectrics was limited to about 200 degrees C and picofarad levels of capacitance. There was also the added problem of limited volumetric efficiency of the capacitors being consumed. Therefore, the trend has been to increase the operating temperature of the capacitors competing in the space, to increase the available capacitance values of the capacitors competing in the space, and to expand the product offering with respect to capacitor case size, configuration and performance for extended periods of time at such high temperatures. Multiple dielectrics are now employed to operate at elevated temperatures and include ceramic, tantalum, plastic film, mica, solid aluminum, glass, silicon, diamond-like and aluminum oxynitride. Ceramic, tantalum, plastic film, glass and diamond-like capacitors have established reliability in the high temperature arena, while solid aluminum, silicon and aluminum oxynitride are emerging technologies. Because of the end-markets into which these high temperature capacitors are sold include both defense and oil & gas related electronic sub-assemblies, these high temperature capacitors are usually subjected to additional rigors of extreme environments in addition to extreme temperatures, including enhanced vibration frequencies, high voltage environments, and radiation exposure. Subsequently failure modes for these “application specific” capacitors include delamination, tomb-stoning, thermal stress cracking, wild fluctuations in capacitance with temperature; and questionable insulation resistance. This study addresses the growing market for capacitors in the 175 degree C to 450 degree C operating temperature range, and forecasts the rate of global consumption over the next five years.

Grid Storage Battery Cost Breakdown: Exploring Paths to Accelerate Adoption
Price USD 3500 PDF by E-mail (Single user license) USD 5250 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise license) Published by Lux Research

The high capital cost of emerging grid storage technologies is the single largest barrier to their widespread adoption. Technology developers make bold claims about performance enhancements and economies of scale that will allow dramatic reductions in capital cost, yet costs remain prohibitively high for all technologies except in the most valuable applications. In this report we built production cost models of lithium-ion, sodium nickel chloride, and vanadium-redox flow battery systems for small- to large-scale grid storage systems to gain an understanding of the key cost components for each technology, drivers that will facilitate cost reduction, and constraints to innovative material and manufacturing approaches. Our baseline scenarios for grid-tied systems indicate that by 2022 lithium-ion batteries will reach $506/kWh, ZEBRA batteries will approach $473/kWh, and vanadium redox flow batteries will hit $783/kWh, although each chemistry will follow a different route to these cost floors. We then evaluated the ample opportunities for disruptive innovations in each chemistry's development that may enable competitors to dramatically reduce costs and drive global market adoption.

Enhanced Oil Recovery, 2nd Edition
Price USD 4950 PDF by E-mail (Single User License) USD 6200 PDF by E-mail (Departmental License) USD 7500 PDF by E-mail (Global Site License) Published by Specialist in Business Information

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR), also referred to as improved oil recovery or tertiary oil recovery, is most often achieved by injecting a liquid or gas into an oil reservoir, thereby lowering oil viscosity and increasing the amount of oil available for production. Some of the more common EOR methods include gas EOR (mostly CO-2 EOR), thermal EOR and chemical EOR. Microbial EOR and seismic EOR also hold small, but strong niches in the EOR market. While only about 10% - 30% of oil is typically extracted from a well by conventional oil production processes, EOR methods can enhance these recovery rates by an additional 5% to 20% (on a conservative average). The global market for EOR, estimated at more than $126.02 billion in 2011, has shown exciting growth since 2007, when the market totaled $54.96 billion. Technological challenges, hazy regulations, and high implementation costs have often been inhibitory to EOR projects, although this is quickly changing. Government interest and generous investments are helping to spur new developments in technology and also to increase the availability of necessary materials (such as CO-2). SBI Energy expects the EOR industry will continue to flourish in light of these types of developments and that many individuals involved in the EOR business will enjoy exponential growth in the near future. A large number of oil fields around the globe are maturing and are producing less oil - those affected are looking to EOR to increase, or at least maintain, their oil production levels. Many countries rely heavily on oil production for their financial health, and are becoming increasingly willing to invest in EOR, especially as the group of successful EOR projects grows and as the high price of oil continues to support research and development schemes. Around the world, the EOR market is growing and metamorphosing to fit the various regions in which it resides. EOR market growth depends largely on regional factors, such as the health of the local economy; the level of foreign investment; existing politics and policies that may hinder or spur market growth; available technological knowledge and expertise; the type of oil being produced, the geographical location of oil fields and the geology of oil reservoirs; as well as regional oil supply and oil demand. A plethora of technologies and processes are emerging and becoming available that are fulfilling these regional niches and easing EOR production for many oil operators.

AMI Managed Services - Smart Metering as a Managed Service, Transitional and Traditional Outsourcing, Cloud Computing, and AMI Hosting Services: Market Analysis and Forecasts
Price USD 3900 PDF by E-mail (Basic License) USD 5850 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise License) Published by Pike Research

AMI managed services (AMS) are deployments of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) systems in which a third party other than the utility operates the AMI system on a day-to-day basis. For this report, Pike Research defines AMS as a repeatable offering that can be deployed from one client to the next with little customization. AMS is therefore a subset of AMI. Most current AMS offerings are delivered via cloud computing infrastructures, but AMS vendors are reluctant to mention clouds in their collateral or discussions with clients due to a general skepticism about the security of cloud-based services. AMS has so far been most attractive to smaller utilities that do not have the size or staff to operate an AMI system in-house. A further benefit is that AMS can be deployed without the substantial capital investment that smaller utilities are often unable to make. However, AMS has also attracted a few larger utilities that would rather outsource the complexity than deal with it in-house. AMS adoption varies significantly by region and by country. Countries where energy distribution is a state-owned monopoly are unlikely to use AMS. By contrast, more liberalized markets may portend greater occurrence of AMS but there are exceptions. The most active AMS regions of the world today are North America and Northern Europe. This Pike Research report analyzes the global market for AMS with regional breakdowns and detailed analysis of the AMS market in 27 key countries. The report also assesses key business drivers for AMS, pricing methodologies, and the types of vendors most likely to be successful, with in-depth profiles of key players. The market forecasts cover the period from 2012 through 2020, for each major region of the world. U.S. forecasts are further segmented by utility type: investor owned, municipal, and cooperative.

One of the most significant changes within this is the potential switch from petroleum-based vehicles to electric alternatives. Electric vehicles require different energy storage devices to run, and this will fuel the demand for advanced batteries in the future. The current Electric Vehicles (EV) market mainly consists of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). Rechargeable batteries held a share of approximately 76% of the total batteries market in 2011, and primarily included include Li-ion batteries, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries. Li-ion batteries are currently dominating the energy storage market compared to the other two nickel-based batteries, as they are the most modern technology in the market, offering higher energy density and better performance than other battery types. NiCd batteries are swiftly being phased out completely, as they offer only half the capacity of NiMH batteries for the same weight or volume, and only one-fourth that of Li-ion batteries, giving the NiCd battery a poor price-performance ratio. The Asia-Pacific region has historically been the market leader in the Li-ion batteries market, with China, Korea and Japan being the major producers. Asia-Pacific is expected to remain the market leader with a share of 53% in 2020, due to the growing consumption pattern for batteries. However, North America's batteries market is expected to grow at a higher growth rate compared to Asia-Pacific over the forecast period, from a 9% share of the global Li-ion batteries market in 2011 to a 29% share by 2020.

Putting High-Concentrating Photovoltaics into Focus
Price USD 3500 PDF by E-mail (Single user license) USD 5250 PDF by E-mail (Enterprise license) Published by Lux Research

With subsidies for solar evaporating in developed, highly-penetrated markets, emerging markets with high solar resources will see demand grow at unprecedented rates. The shifting dynamic opens the door for high-concentrating photovoltaics (HCPV), as it is projected to display the fastest relative growth when compared with incumbent photovoltaic (PV) technologies. In this report, we take a close look at the cost structure and the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of HCPV systems with four different optics types and consider the factors that can reduce costs, such as efficiency improvements, economies of scale, and increased access to project capital. Considering current market trends, expect to see HCPV fully competitive with crystalline silicon technology on an LCOE basis before 2020 - though whether any firms will remain alive to compete then is in question. This comprehensive report has detailed assessments and forecasts for all the sectors using and likely to use traction batteries. There are chapters on heavy industrial, light industrial/commercial, mobility for the disabled, two wheel and allied, pure electric cars, hybrid cars, golf cars, military, marine and other. The profusion of pictures, diagrams and tables pulls the subject together to give an independent view of the future ten years. Unit sales, unit prices and total market value are forecast for each sector for 2012-2022. The replacement market is quantified and ten year technology trends by sector are in there too, with a view on winning and losing technologies and companies. This is the essential reference book for those who are anywhere in the hybrid and pure electric vehicle value chain. Those making materials, cells, battery sets or vehicles, researchers, legislators and market analysts will find it invaluable. The whole picture With vehicle traction batteries it is important to look at the whole picture and this report does it for the first time. The rapidly growing market for traction batteries will exceed $55 billion in only ten years. However that spans battery sets up to $500,000 each with great sophistication needed for military, marine and solar aircraft use. Huge numbers of low cost batteries are being used for e-bikes but even here several new technologies are appearing. The largest replacement market is for e-bikes today and the value market for replacement batteries will not be dominated by cars when these batteries last the life of the car - something likely to happen within ten years. The trends are therefore complex and that is why IDTechEx has analysed them with great care.
