During this summer of champions, par-
ents can help their kids be gold medal win-
ners by powering up with daily physical
activity, delicious fruits and veg-
etables, and plenty of water.
“Healthy foods help
kids concentrate and
do better in school,
build strong bodies and
feel good about them-
selves,” explains Emily
Foxworthy, Childrenʼs
PowerPlay! Campaign
Manager.
However, without
the benefit of scheduled meals, snacks
and recess provided during the school day,
too many kids fall into a “summer slump”
of unhealthy behaviors, such as spending
more time indoors watching TV, playing
video games, and continuously snacking
on unhealthy foods.
“Many parents donʼt realize that the
battle against childhood obesity is actually
at its height in the summer months,” said
Foxworthy. “In fact, studies show that kids
gain weight more than twice as fast during
the summer as they do during the regular
school year.”
The Network for a Healthy California—
Childrenʼs Power Play! Campaign (Net-
work) has partnered with summer activity
programs across California for the “Power
Up Your Summer!” Challenge to encour-
age kids and their families to get at least
60 minutes of active play every day and eat
more fruits and vegetables this summer.
Help Your Kids be Champions this Summer
Parents should also take an active role in
making sure their kids are eating well and
staying active all summer long. Foxworthy
offers these six tips to avoid
the summer slump:
1. Find safe outdoor
places for kids to play,
such as parks, recreation
centers and pools.
2. Donʼt let the heat
slow you down. Dancing
and hide-and-seek are
great indoor activities.
3. Limit TV and com-
puter time to less than
two hours per day.
4.Involve the entire family in reaching a
goal of 60 minutes of play every day.
5.Fill half your plate with delicious
summer fruits and vegetables at every
meal.
6.Be a good role model. Your kids are
more likely to make healthy choices if you
do it too!
“We all want to raise our kids to be
champions in whatever they do,” said Fox-
worthy. “Healthy habits like eating fruits
and vegetables, drinking plenty of water
and being active every day are the building
blocks to success.”

Your Summer!” Challenge, and for re-
sources, tips and recipes, go to www.

The City of Oroville Public Works De-
partment has recently had a cooperative
agreement with three local companies that
provided labor services, at no cost, to the
City for sidewalk improvements along
Table Mountain Blvd, just south of Grand
Avenue and at Grant & Lincoln Streets.
The first area, Table Mountain Blvd,
lacked a paved sidewalk and has a large
number of pedestrians using it. The second
project, Grant Avenue at Lincoln Street,
completed the paving linking the pave-
ment to the sidewalk.
Work was completed earlier this month
with Fairbanks Paving providing paving

services, Crosswell Trucking materials
delivery, and Custom Sealing and Striping
appropriate safety markings. All materials
were provided by the City of Oroville for
the project which resulted in substantial
safety improvements for school children
and other pedestrians.
Art da Rosa, Director of Public Works
stated, “This was an excellent opportunity
for local companies that wanted to give
back to the community” going on to say,
“The City of Oroville is appreciative of
each of the companies that participated in
this safety project and is hopeful for ad-
ditional projects in the future.”

Have you ever wanted to experience
what it is like to soar like a bird, gliding
aimlessly in and around the Greater Oro-
ville Urban Area from one-mile high?
Since late last winter, TMAGlider has
been open and operating from the Oroville
Municipal Airport, giving primarily glid-
er rides, from 2,000 feet and up through
5,500 feet. The length of the ride is up to
40 minutes or more!
In the glider, air becomes quiet except
for the whistling that penetrates the cock-
pit otherwise, the ride is breathtaking, sur-
real, and an unforgettable experience that
everyone must do at least once or twice!
You will fly over the Lake Oroville, Table
Mountain, Downtown, and the Feather
River, and see much more! Donʼt forget to
bring your camera!
TMAGlider operates from Spring
through Fall. Currently, they operate only
Table Mountain Aviation Glider Rides
Saturday or Sunday. Check their
website (TMAGlider.com) for
the specific weekend day. They
schedule rides from 8AM through
1PM.
TMAGlider Is composed of,
Garry Lee ( the glider pilot), The
tow plane pilots are Del Boyd,
(Butte Co. Mosquito Abatement),
Jerry Dunwoody, (retired North-
west Airline Captain), Dr. Robert
Kearbey, and Dr. Ryan Kearbey,
(Kearbey Dental Group).
Their Schweizer SGS2-33A Glider was
used by the Air Force Academy for more
than 18 years, through the late 90ʼs, made
in Elmira, New York, in 1974. Mention
you saw this in the Digger and get an extra
300ʼ of altitude.. In other words, your ride
will be much longer!!
Have you ever wondered what it would
be like to float on a big, white, fluffy,
marshmallowy cloud? On difficult days, I
often wish I could elevate to such a cloud
and just zone out and recharge. Well, I just
about did that, this morning. I went on a
glider ride with Table Mountain Aviation
Glider Operations at the Oroville, CA air-
port. It was unbelievable!
Throughout my years in Oro-
ville, I have learned how much
our city has to offer to everyone,
and now I know of one more
thing. Our city is certainly beau-
tiful from the air and seeing the
dam from up there is magical.
I was lucky because water was
being let out of the spillway and
enhanced the beauty of the dam.
WOW!
A Passengerʼs Account
The ride is so peaceful and quiet. Garry
Lee, my pilot, was great. He pointed out
points of interest, was informative and al-
lowed me plenty of time to just enjoy float-
ing quietly. I was in a world of my
own. The photo opportunities are
many and incredible.
If youʼve ever had an experience
that took your breath away and one
youʼll never forget – not only the
experience itself but the feeling it
gave you, this is certainly going to
be another one!
Everyone there was super.
They all treated me as if I was the
only client on the list, and they all
seemed to have as much fun doing
their jobs as I was being the receiv-
er of all the fun.
Take it from me, itʼs also the perfect gift
for anyone you have problems shopping
for. Iʼm going back next month.

It’s catch up time for this Newcomer.
No, I didn’t take that safari vacation to
Africa, nor did I catch up with that camel
caravan in some desert far away. I mere-
ly hung around the house snoozing and
watching television while recovering from
a couple of surgeries. The roads I trav-
eled were with Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, and QVC.
It wasn’t nearly as much fun as taking
part in the festivities going on in Histori-
cal Downtown Oroville on the first Friday
of each month. Check your calendar; this
Friday is August 3, 2012. No commer-
cials, just a whole lot of fun... music in the
streets, sidewalk sales, happy merchants
and shoppers. It’s not the end of the season,
but end-of-season sales are in progress.
David Glover will be the movie projectionist
at Centennial Park, and he has promised
fun and games before family movies begin
at dusk.
I dearly love walking and shopping in
Oroville. Everyone seems so happy and
carefree. You know meeting and greeting
people is my passion. Shopping is enter-
taining, and my hobby is writing about it.
It’s true I have earned the reputation of be-
ing A Happy Shopper. How about you?
Country and western music (Patsy Cline,
Merl Haggard) is alive and well. Lowell
Weatherford and his mother Glenda enter-
tain monthly at Olive Ridge Convalescent
Home. They bring their karaoke equip-
ment, and a jolly good time is had by all.
That’s where I met up with retired Colonial
George Morgan and his blushing-bride Leta
(Pauley) Morgan. The Morgans were hold-
ing hands and swaying to the music. They
weren’t a bit shy when they told me they
had been married (to one another) for 74
years. The Colonel started out in WWII as a
B-52 pilot. Technically, they are Newcom-
ers to Oroville. If you ever have the oppor-
tunity to be entertained by Lowell Weath-
erford and his Mother Glenda, along with
all their karaoke equipment, take advantage
of it. It’s always fun to tap your feet, clap
your hands, or do a little boogie in rhythm
to those western sounds and lyrics.
Speaking of music... Bonnie Lombardi
and the Tuesday Group make beautiful mu-
sic together at FRSCA (Feather River Se-
nior Center) on Myers Street on Saturdays.
That’s a Farmer’s Market day. You can
do your shopping before Bingo starts one
o’clock, then store the fresh fruit and veg-
gies in FRSCA’s giant refrigerator. Lunch
at FRSCA? Sometimes Luceddie’s Ameri-
can & Italian Restaurant serves breakfast
burritos for only $5. I am told sometimes
lunch is prepared and sent over from Mug
Shots or Coffee Diem. Other times the staff
may prepare goodies. Remember, Bingo
starts at 1 o’clock, which gives you plenty
of time to hit the Farmer’s Market and/or
do a little shopping before the games be-
gin. Two of my favorite friends are faithful
Bingo players: Maggie Maryon from Bur-
lingame, and Margaret Dent, who has re-
turned from one of her extended vacations.
Margaret is a poet..
Have you been to KUSEL’S BIG STORE
on Montgomery Street, across from the
Municipal parking lot? It’s a big-little
store chuck full of gifts, cards, candles &
collectibles. I am told it is a delightful store
to explore.
Yes, there are many other things to do be-
sides sitting at home watching TV. I am so
happy to be out and about again. Why not
consider joining The Monday Club. ( I did!)
It’s an exciting group of adventurous ladies
who generally meet on Mondays. They are
anxious to have more members of all age
groups. Like FRSCA, they have a beautiful
stage and do wonderful things for the com-
munity. The talented Birdcage actors and
actresses love to play on their stage. Watch
for more information.
Talking about the Birdcage Theatre... It’s
time for their annual Birdie Awards Dinner!
When? Saturday, August 18th at Western
Pacific Brewery & Cafe, a.k.a. The Depot.
Food, fun and acknowledgments of the tal-
ent and efforts of those who worked so hard
in the 28th season acting, directing, and
volunteering themselves and their families
to keep everything running smoothly. Audi-
tions are being scheduled now in prepara-
tion for the new season. Each year gets bet-
ter... why not buy some season tickets?
Oroville Downtown Business Associa-
tion’s next general business meeting is 8
a.m. August 15th at the FRSCA building at
1335 Myers Street.
Movies in the Park and pre-show fun and
games begin on the first Friday in August,
at dusk, and will continue the next two
Fridays, as well.
Please mark your calendar and buy your
tickets early for the 100th Birthday Cele-
bration of Charlie’s, a.k.a. Tong Fong Low,
on Saturday, September 8th. There will be
Chinese Lion Dancing on Robinson Street,
an outdoor luncheon, and Chinese youth
crafts. Get your tickets early for the San
Francisco White Crane Dragon Dancing,
performing at the State Theater. This prom-
ises to be a sell-out!
Stamp Your Feet dance classes sign-ups
begin Thursday, August 2nd, from 4 p.m. to
8 p.m.
Okay folks, keep your eyes and ears
open for all the activities taking place in
Historical Downtown Oroville in the next
few months. Put forth the effort to visit our
wonderful museums right here in town.
Let’s continue to support local businesses
and participate in the activities. I am going
to be out and about trying to meet new peo-
ple and do some of things I am asking you
to do. I recently took an acrylic painting
class at Julee’s Left Bank Studio. It was a
lot of fun. I understand she will be teaching
another class at the end of August. If you
want more information you can drop her an
e-mail at juleespohn@live.com.
Before closing I want to thank Susan
Blood and her darling granddaughter
Annabelle for showing me their favorite
places to visit. And Nancy Riveria and her
daughter Alex for taking me under their
wing this summer. How can I forget all the
other forks who have bent over backwards
to help me recover from my own ordeals
this past year: Joe and Carolyn Stava,
Linda Peacock, Carol Kitchen, Valeri, Ki-
ara and Dana... and each and every one of
my neighbors: “You know who you are!”
Thank you for being there for me this past
year, I truly feel blessed.
Sincerely, Della B. & Her Duchess...
