BENDEMEER SECONDARY SCHOOL Secondary 1: Photosynthesis [1] Name: _______________________________ ( Learning Objectives 1) To trace the primary food source in a food chain to the green plant Food chain
is a series of organisms through which energy is being transferred in the form of food

Class: _________

Autotroph (

) o use light energy from the Sun to produce food ) o get energy from the foods they eat

Heterotroph (

Insectivorous plants traps insect and feed on them Consumers

Learning Objectives 2) To outline the process of photosynthesis by which plants manufacture food

A. Photosynthesis Photo = light Synthesis = putting together

Process by which food is made in plants, from carbon dioxide and water.

Only occurs in the presence of light and chlorophyll.

Word equation

Experiments To Demonstrate Photosynthesis

Date:

1)

Test for starch

Put leaf in boiling water. Soak leaf in warmed alcohol, then rinse in hot water. Add a few drops of iodine solution to leaf. If leaf turns blue-black starch present If leaf remains brown starch absent

Kill leaf Decolourise and soften leaf Test with iodine solution

2) Test for oxygen production during photosynthesis

Set-up A

Set-up B

1. Set up 2 sets of apparatus, making sure water has good supply of dissolved carbon dioxide 2. Expose 1 set-up to bright sunlight (Set-up A) and keep the other in the dark (Set-up B)

Date:

3. After about 3 hours, some water in the test-tube of Set-up A would be displaced by colourless gas. While the water in the test-tube of Set-up B remains unchanged. 4. A glowing splint inserted into the colourless gas should relight, indicating oxygen gas.

3) To show that carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis

1. Keep 2 similar potted plants in the dark for 2-3 days to destarch leaves. 2. Place each plant under separate bell jars. o one jar with carbon dioxide removed (through use of soda lime and sodium hydroxide solution). o other jar with cotton wool and water replacing soda lime and sodium hydroxide solution respectively. 3. Keep both sets in bright sunlight for 5-6 hours. 4. When one leaf from each plant is tested, o only the leaf from the environment with carbon dioxide will turn blue-black with iodine solution

4) To show that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis

Date: 1. Expose a plant with variegated leaves to sunlight for 5-6 hours. 2. When leaf is tested for starch, only those parts which are green will be stained blue-

black with iodine solution.

5) To show that light is necessary for photosynthesis

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Keep a plant in the dark for 2-3 days to destarch it. Test a leaf to make sure no starch is present. Cover part of the leaf with a piece of dark paper. Put the whole plant in bright sunlight for 5-6 hours. Test the leaf that is covered for starch. o the part of the leaf covered by the dark paper should not be stained o while the rest of the leaf should be stained blue-black
