There has been a rise in the usage of Smart phones/ tablets, data network capacity are increasing steadily. It is convenient for the consumers; this research would examine the potential of short range visible light communication using mobile phones. Various researchers were able to transfer data rates of 100Mbit/sec without any losses, using LED in the ceiling, and the receiver was placed anywhere in the radius, more recently the team is working with Siemens and France telecom Orange labs, which has also improved the transfer rates, they were able to get a rate of 800 Mbit/sec in lab. There are few advantages of VLC because it does not interfere with RF electronics, it works on a licence free spectrum and has extremely little possibility of eavesdropping, unlike the blue tooth communication. There are various applications, which researchers have thought of include: 1. Using it to design of modern collision avoidance system. 2. Since it is difficult to intercept than RF signals it could suit military applications. 3. It could be used in Hospitals, aircraft, vehicle to vehicle communication. I propose to utilize this technology a step closer to commercialisation by integrating it with the mobile phone platform. Major players such as Google, Visa and many leading wireless carriers are placing significant bets on the rapid growth of one of the key enablers of mobile commerce: near-field communications, or NFC a communications technology that, with a touch, connects electronic devices to a reader, which then typically initiates a payment transaction, we could use the visible light transmission for near field communication. By focusing visible light at another mobile device, we can produce a very high rate data link with all qualities of inbuilt security. This would overcome the trouble of having to pair or connect & would provide much higher data rate than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Stages At the initial stages of my research, I will be carrying out a Theoretical Investigation in to the employment of visible light communication, which will be followed by planning and development report. I will model a system which could take in considerations of using an inbuilt camera flash, led screen of the phones, or an external source of light. The research by Dr.Hao Le Minh expressed the use of organic Led; I would also consider carrying out field trials on the newly built capacitive display technology, and various other electronic visual displays, for a product to have commercial value we will have to develop a model which would run with any hardware. Like the applications of android work on any android device, we could never deny that we could improve the software’s to implement this technology in to any device. I would also place an aspect of an external hardware for the existing mobile phones which could be connected to the USB slot or the audio jack for e.g. square which has integrated mobile phone as a card reader. We would need to develop software to support the changes in hardware. Like the invention of MIMO technology for wireless communication, this would be a breakthrough innovation for mobile phone communication I would also develop new applications based on visible light communication like NFC. Visible light communication will be the future communication which I believe to be one of the safest ways, and in the future, we could be the first university in the world to have started the research on effective implementation of this technology in to mobile phones. We will have to do a lot of simulated as well as practical on field tests to check the efficiency, and the throughput rates and will have to find methods to eliminate the potential spurs. . ChallengesHaving specialization in mobile communication and wireless communication engineering, I believe one of the key challenges would be to securely deliver data at high bit rates while maintaining mobility. VLC will be have less challenges in indoor applications but jamming from the sun (the perfect white noise isotropic radiator), scintillation, beam blockage (shadowing) and operation in heavy, snow, fog or rain would limit reliable operation and range.
Other challenges would be the limited transmission range, this could be because after the optical signal is transmitted the energy is rapidly absorbed by the oxygen molecules in the atmosphere, but this feature could also help to reduce interference in the neighbouring optical networks. To solve the problem of LOS (line of sight) signal block, I want to expand the area of photo detection elements. Why Consider Me for this research I have a thorough knowledge in the Mobile phone technology, designing of circuits using microwave office, I can determine the s parameters, design amplifiers, calculate the lumped element matching and also am skilled in finding the maximum throughput rate in case of wireless communication with the help of software’s like (Omni peek, wire shark, traffic generating software’s like Iperf, Jperf). I have a decent amount of knowledge in the digital signal processing, digital image processing, telecommunication switching and various other semiconductor devices. I can use AWR Microwave office, spectrum analyser and network analyser. I will be able to carry out a theoretical investigation, process modelling and practical implementation of research in order to generate intellectual property technically and commercially to potentially support the future standards of smart phone visual communications. This transformation would further reduce the health risks by the use of mobile phones due to radiations. It has enormous potential in any RF sensitive areas. Imagine if each class room in the university using visible light instead of existing access points. The scope of application is beyond our vision and extraordinary discoveries have always been made because of imaginations. I have been raising cognition on the optical communication technology, by reading books and research documents related to optical communication, I hold extensive knowledge in the transmission line technology. I am tenacious, determined, have the ability to work hard. Few projects that I have undertaken during my Final year Computer control of a direct digital synthesizer (Under Dr. David Smith) This project is a design engineering project which has been undertaken in order to use a direct digital synthesizer understood the working of a DDS, looked at types of DDS, choose from the specifications and to set accurate frequency in the range of 7.2 MHz to 9.2 MHz’s with a step size of 10 KHz. Objectives The main objectives of the project was to: • Understand the Output Frequencies. • Collect the Background Information about a DDS. • Understand the applications of a DDS. • Determined the required input for select output Frequency. • Worked out the output frequency changes of a direct digital synthesizer. • Understood the use of a Band pass filter. . • Produced a circuit which will evaluate and be able to select the Desired Frequency by using the Evaluation Board AD_9834 (EVAL 9834EB). • For Higher Knowledge and understanding I am of learning and designing how to input serial data into a DDS chip using Lab view. Use spectrum analyzer to find the frequency domain and used an oscilloscope to find the time domain. By undertaking this project I have understood the functioning of a DDS, How to use lab view and various other software’s. I was in regular touch with organization like the Analog devices which further helped me to increase my knowledge. This also proves my research competency. 802.11 Wireless data throughput ( Under Dr. Graham Sexton) Performed a study on data throughput in 802.11 WLAN systems. The study was partially theoretical and partially practical. I built a theoretical model describing data throughput and verified the model through practical experimentation. The research on VLC also has got similar requirements in the initial stage where we need to determine the through put rates. 802.11 standards are often characterized by channel bit rates, for example 802.11b is usually described as supporting a bit rate of 11Mbps. WLAN users notice that actual data throughput, as perceived by the clients on a WLAN only approaches half of this value and is sometimes
less. The lower through put rate is primarily due to the MAC layer overheads in the 802.11 architecture and is therefore intentional. Communication between a wireless client and an access point is governed by a strict set of protocols that introduces fixed delays in the communication channel. Indeed the delays do not change significantly despite faster underlying channel bit rates. I examined 802.11a.
Tasks performed under the project 1. Did Background research to examine how other authors have developed throughput models. 2. Developed a model that allowed calculating actual data throughput against underlying data rate. Plotted this data for a number of packet sizes. Additionally I provided the data in tabular form as part of an excel spreadsheet. 3. I measured data throughput (for a using an access point supporting both ‘a’ and ‘n’ modes (Linksys WRT610N) along with a Linksys WUSB600N USB WNIC. Throughput was measured using JPERF and IPERF traffic generation software. Wireless traffic (i.e. traffic through the air between the AP and WNIC) was monitored using Omni peek on a probe WNIC. The work was carried out in an anechoic chamber. We also used Wire shark to analyze the packets. Throughput measurements was taken for the maximum speed available for 802.11/a. In the research on visible light communication I feel one of the key challenges would be to securely deliver data at high bit rates while maintaining mobility so we will have to determine the maximum throughput rates also. I have also undertaken projects and assignments related to mobile hardware technologies, and also topics related to transmission line theory and topics related to noise errors, I have also designed amplifiers. I am endowed with a passion for winning as evinced through excellence in academic & extracurricular areas. I possess analytical thinking and innovation & problem solving ability. I have a thorough knowledge in the Mobile phone technology, designing of circuits using microwave office, I can determine the S Parameters, design amplifiers, do the lumped element matching and also am proficient in finding the maximum throughput rate in case of wireless communication with the help of software’s like (Omni peek, wire shark, traffic generating software’s like Iperf, Jperf). I have a decent amount of expertise in the digital signal processing, digital image processing, telecommunication switching, and programming and semiconductor devices. I can use AWR Microwave office, spectrum analyser and network analyser. I also have an enormous amount of knowledge in the IEEE 802.11 standards and the rules surrounding it. I also have basic office skills like Computer Application Skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) keyboarding, telephone etiquette and other skills needed to collaborate with other researchers who also are researching on the similar topics around the world. My technical skill does not only prove my competence, to come out with exceptionally robust findings in research a student needs to be an obedient follower & learner. I have been a staunch learner and have qualities such as ideation and innovative thinking and I find a solution for most of the problems. I can manage time effectively which is distinct from my final year involvement in the elections. Since I had a module of project management in my final year, I can apply the project management strategies and also create a Gantt chart using Microsoft Project therefore I will be able to plan the research in an effective manner. I have been a volunteer because of which I gained valuable skills, such as being assertive, communicating, listening, public speaking, time management, stress management, lobbying, negotiation, being a team member, referral skills, confidentiality, report writing and made me willing to take on and deal with responsibility. I am an expert in transforming complex technical issues into clear customer value messages; hence in this project I will be able to make use of visible light for smart phones a company oriented project which could bring fame to the university. I am optimistic, and a quick learner and am blessed with the ability to work under pressure and always meet deadlines. Connect at - http://uk.linkedin.com/in/manishabraham
