Ancient Rome is a civilization that thrived on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 8th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea and centered on the city of Rome, it expanded to one of the largest empires in the ancient world.

WHY
WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

THE ROMAN EMPIRE WAS THE MOST POWERFUL EMPIRE IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

Rome's early history is based on the legend of Romulus, first king of Rome.

Romulus and Remus were twin brothers. They were abandoned by their parents as babies and put into a basket that was then placed into the River Tiber. The basket ran aground and the twins were discovered by a female wolf. The wolf nursed the babies for a short time before they were found by a shepherd. The shepherd then brought up the twins. When Romulus and Remus became adults, they decided to found a city where the wolf had found them. The brothers quarrelled over where the site should be and Remus was killed by his brother. This left Romulus the sole founder of the new city and he gave his name to it – Rome. The date given for the founding of Rome is 753 BC. This story, of course, is only a legend. The actual growth of Rome is less exotic and interesting. The city of Rome grew out of a number of settlements that existed around seven hills that were near the River Tiber.

The Roman Republic was the period of the ancient Roman civilization when the government operated as a republic. It began with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, traditionally dated around 509 BC, and its replacement by a government headed by two consuls, elected annually by the citizens and advised by a senate.

A complex constitution gradually developed, centered on the principles of a separation of powers and checks and balances. Except in times of dire national emergency, public offices were limited to one year, so in theory at least, no single individual could dominate his fellow citizens.

THE REPUBLIC GOVERNMENT WAS HEADED BY TWO CONSULS, ELECTED ANNUALLY BY THE CITIZENS AND ADVISED BY A SENATE.

It came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

 CHRISTUS,

the founder of CHRISTIANS, was put to death as a criminal by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea, in the reign of Tiberius

- Roman historian Tacitus in his book Annals

NERO WAS THE MOST CRUEL OF THE ROMAN EMPERORS TOWARDS CHRISTIANS

CHRISTIANS WERE KILLED AND EATEN LIVE BY WILD ANIMALS WHILE ROMANS ENJOYED THE SPECTACLE.

CHRISTIANS WERE COVERED WITH THE HIDES OF WILD BEASTS, AND WORRIED TO DEATH BY DOGS, OR NAILED TO CROSSES, OR SET FIRE TO, AND WHEN THE DAY WANED, BURNED TO SERVE FOR THE EVENING LIGHTS.
- Roman historian Tacitus in his book Annals

Nero put the blame of the great fire in Rome on the Christians.

“Emperor Nero falsely charged with guilt, and punished with the most fearful tortures, the persons commonly called Christians.” - Roman historian Tacitus in his book Annals

THE FALL OF JERUSALEM IN 70 A.D.

TITUS CEASER ATTACKED AND DESTROYED JESUSLAEM IN 70 A.D. AND CRUSHED THE REVOLT OF THE JEWS IN PALESTINE THAT HAD BEGUN IN 66 A.D.

"And Jesus went out, and departed from the Temple…."See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down." (Matthew 24:1-2 )

Constantine the Great was the 57th Emperor of the Roman Empire

He is also known as Constantine I or Saint Constantine He ruled from A.D. 306 to 337.

According to Roman Historian Lactantius, Constantine was visited by a dream the night before the battle, wherein he was advised "to mark the heavenly sign of God on the shields of his soldiers...by means of a slanted letter X with the top of its head bent round, he marked Christ on their shields.

He saw with his own eyes in the heavens a trophy of the cross arising from the light of the sun, carrying the message, In Hoc Signo Vinces or "In this sign, you will conquer"

The Battle of the Milvian Bridge
shows the battle that took place on October 28, A.D. 312 between the Roman Emperors Constantine I and Maxentius.

Thus God in time used the very men who once denied Him, persecuted and murdered his followers to become His greatest followers and messengers of the Good News as we can learn from the History of the Roman Empire…

THE CROSS BECAME HIS STANDARD AND HE WON THE BATTLE, AND ATTRIBUTED HIS VICTORY TO THE GOD OF CHRISTIANITY.
