Summer Reading Program Ends August 18

Westfield Washington Public Library Board of Trustees: Mike Thomas, President Carolyn Wheeler, Vice President Paul Catlin, Treasurer Mic Mead, Secretary Nancy Knochel Dan Pitcock David Weiss The Library Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The Summer Reading Program comes to an end on August 18, so be sure to get all your books entered! There are some terrific incentives to work toward, including lots of great items donated from around the Westfield business community. Adults have a chance to win a Kindle Fire and kids can win a Color Nook! There is also a special drawing for kids and teens to win an iPad! So hurry and get all your reading logged!

The Building Committee reported that Library Director Sheryl Sollars had sent out Requests for Qualifications to five different Preliminary work on the 2013 budget has begun. The Budget Committee will meet later in July, and the meeting with the representative from the Department of Local Government and Finance is during the last week in July. The Library Board voted to advertise the notice for an additional appropriation from the Rainy Day Fund. This additional appropriation is for the purchase of materials, paying for service contracts and to fund the possible recommendations the Personnel Committee is currently working on. The Public Hearing for the additional appropriation will be at the August 8, 2012 Board Meeting. The Library Board discussed various fund raising ideas for the Library Renovation/Addition Project.

Weve got Matinee Movies: Based on the Book at the library! Go Between the Covers with our series of movies based on popular books. Join us on one Saturday each month at 1 p.m. as we screen some fantastic films. The film on August 11 is War Horse ( Dreamworks) Refreshments will be served. Why buy a ticket when you can see movies for FREE at WWPL! Almost everybody has a digital camera, but the results can often be disappointing. On Saturday, August 25, at 10:30 a.m., learn some tips and techniques like lighting, composition, downloading your photos and storing them. There will be a question and answer session, too. Art Club School age kids to teens are invited to be part of the WWPL Art Club. This free club will meet 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday August 2: Torn Paper Art - Making different themed pictures from torn paper. Xtreme Science MagicShow On Wednesday, August 8, at 11 a.m., you can see a fire tornado, smoke-ring cannon, optical illusions, floating beach balls, bouncing bubbles, and lots more! Chess and Strategy Games Camp Have fun playing chess and other strategy games at the Chess and Strategy Games Camp at the library. Baby Love Birth to 18 Months Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 Give your child a head start to early literacy with this unique program of rhyme, play and song. Free Teddy Bear Picnic If you go down to the park August 6 and 7, you're sure of a big surprise, because on those days the library teddy bears have their picnic. The fun begins at 11 a.m. both days for toddlers and preschoolers, and siblings are welcome to attend, as well. If the weather is nice, the program is at Asa Bales Park, next to the library. If it storms either day, the program is in the library. The focus is on fun, with stories, songs, fingerplays and rhymes to strengthen early literacy skills and encourage the joy of learning. Each program ends with an art project, a craft or an activity, and its all free! 2012 Book Sales


One part of the Friends fundraising efforts is Book Sales. There is always a special Preview Sale for Friends members on Friday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., then the sale is open to the general public during regular library hours from Saturday through the following Saturday.
