Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP)

Executive Summary
Organizations today have diverse IT infrastructure, and most of this infrastructure is not unified. Though some mobility components can leverage specific features of already existing applications and infrastructure, the same imposes new requirements on the organization’s existing IT infrastructure. Specific solutions by vendors that have mobile enablement can also be retrofitted to support mobility. However, using multiple vendor products or specific solutions just to mobile enable individual applications or suites will give rise to silos which will not easily integrate, giving rise to maintenance problems and cost concerns. Enabling mobility within an organization brings enhanced functionalities in the areas of development environment, data integration, security, native client, and analytics and offers core functionality for MEAP offerings. Upon building the application, and to secure the IT infrastructure, the team must focus on including Device management and service/application provisions, and policing for managing MEAP applications and devices. Interactions with specific mobility products like Enterprise servers or specialized MDM product would be required to support mobile devices. Mobile application lifecycle management, device life cycle management, and so on, fall within the category of specific mobility related needs. In the current trend, bringing mobility into an enterprise is an important business decision and a dedicated MEAP is required to enable and support mobility and must take into account all the requirements mentioned earlier. An effective MEAP will be able to interface with existing middleware and backend systems to enable data and applications on mobile devices. The MEAP will also make available a set of common features and services that can be leveraged by multiple applications to perform common operations.

MEAP Offerings
In this section, we take you through the key MEAP vendors’ offerings. A comparison of the features of vendor offerings in the MEAP space is presented below. The comparison is conducted from information collected based on the experience gained by exploring the MEAP offerings by the key vendors on this space.

Sybase Unwired Platform

Figure 1 : Sybase Unwired Platform Architecture
Sybase unwired platform is one of the most desired MEAPs in the market. With the release of Sybase 2.1, architectural changes have been made to support a cross-platform approach and solutions. These changes are listed below: 1. Web Container for Cross Platform support on reply lookup 2. OData (Open Data Protocol), A web based protocol for querying and updating data is primarily utilized to parse and interact with data streams. 3. OData specific extensions to SAP 4. HTML5 JSS based Hybrid Applications 5. Sybase Unwired supports a wide range of backend data providers.

6. Enterprise Libraries are available to applications that are developed for the unwired platform. Applications developed for the device would require running on top of the services and libraries provided by the platform. An Unwired runtime would in effect be needed for this purpose. Third-party applications will not have access to the Enterprise Libraries. 7. Mobile Server components are possible when they are developed using the tools provided by the Unwired platform. The capacity to develop and integrate third-party applications may be limited or absent as of now, and needs to be studied in detail. 8. Common services are available to those applications that are developed using the Unwired platform only. Capability needed to support independent applications is limited and needs to be studied in more detail: a. Partial support to Data Management on the device is available to Unwired platform data. Support to other data needs to be studied in detail. b. Supports multiple forms of authentication. Support for security of data is limited. c. The support for notifications needs to be looked into in more details. 9. A partial rendering capability is present. This capability is related to rendering of static applications at development time only. Dynamic runtime rendering of application and data based on the target device is not present. 10. The Unwired platform has very limited user and device management capabilities. However, when used in conjunction with another Sybase product: Afaria (which integrates into the Unwired platform), significant capabilities can be realized. 11. MDM – Sybase brings Afaria as a Mobile Device Management solution to manages devices

Figure 2: Antenna Mobility Cloud
1. AMP Chroma provides Cloud based solutions 2. Hybrid applications, Native apps, and web applications can be created using the AMP Chroma , mobility suite. 3. An IDE to develop Mobile apps and Web applications 4. Connectivity using multiple protocols is available. Support for specific backend systems, for protoc example K2 or SAP BW, needs to be studied in more detail. 5. Antenna can be integrated with major backend vendors like IBM, Oracle, SAP, HP, Microsoft, and so on 6. Application libraries are part of the AMP stack. They require a device runtime on which AMP the applications can execute. AMP applications cannot execute without this runtime. Support for third-party applications needs to be studied. party 7. Mobile Server components consist of a set of pre-built server components deployed by pre Antenna. Additional components can be developed using AMP’s tools. Third-party application Third support appears limited and needs to be studied in detail. 8. Common Services are for AMP-based applications. External applications and third-party AMP based third server components appear to not have access to these features: a. Data Management is available as part of a separate offering by Antenna b. Security and Authentication capabilities are available. Support for features like device level encryption and remote lock/wipe of data need to be studied in detail. lo c. Multiple messaging protocols are supported. However, support for Push notifications needs to be studied in detail detail.

New Vendor
Oracle is a new vendor coming up in this space with its Application Development Framework. Oracle provides ADF (Application Development Framework) mobile, which allows developers to quickly build applications for mobile operating systems such as iOS, Android, etc. Mobile access has become a standard part of the corporate space to increase efficiency because it is readily available to users. Of course there are challenges to enable enterprise applications on mobile devices, specifically different OS platforms, OS versions, device fragmentations, etc. To overcome these challenges ORACLE ADF defines their mobile strategies to handle these variances in a one-stop solution. Like other players, ORACLE also follows three development practices as in the market. a. HTML 5, Java script • • • HTML 5 will be rendered using WebView controllers of the browser engine Provides enterprise backend services data at runtime Enabling offline data access using local SQL database

b. HTML web application • • • Acts as pure mobile web application Originally optimized data based for mobile devices Always runtime service data with connectivity

c. Native application • • Functionality that accesses native device features Developed using appropriate native language support such as Objective C for iOS

Application developed using ADF shall be part of traditional deployment approach or through the app store. Oracle fusion middleware allows creating and running agile as well as business applications coupled with an integrated approach.

Conclusions
The best approach for any organization while implementing a given solution is to first identify its own needs without any specific market offering in mind. Having identified needs, it is much easier to then analyze the extent to which these needs are readily fulfilled by the MEAP offerings present in the market. In this document, we have provided a list of the MEAP’s and identified the prime needs of MEAP without considering any specific MEAP offering. Now MEAP are matured enough to handle various data sources and offer a lot of capabilities. However, the primary concern for Enterprise integration is with the backend system offerings to integrate data sources or providing a customized approach according to the needs of the organization. The Organization can decide on the approach to be taken based on the bare minimum features of the essential requirements, the budget needed, and the feasibility of integration with a standard MEAP offering. Based on the above analysis and comparison, it is clear that no single product can fulfill all MEAP requirements of a large organization. Most of the MEAP in the market today support HTML5 apps to quickly blend dynamic web content with native and hybrid apps. This approach has been introduced to address the needs of emerging platforms and reduce overall implementation time and costs. However, there are other factors that should be considered for developing native apps. 1. The platforms have limited capability to mobile enable existing applications: a. AMPChroma, Sybase Unwired platforms, and CommonTime can mobile enable a limited set of SAP-based applications. However, they would be limited mostly to the workflows domain. b. After a merger with Pyxis mobile platform, Verivo can be mobile enabled using the existing mobile application framework, with a huge set of support for upcoming devices in the market. c. CommonTime can be mobile enabled using their existing components for designing the application and packaging the solutions. It will emerge as the MEAP epitome in the future. 2. Selecting Sybase Unwired or Antenna Dexterra would also constrain new applications development efforts to the platform imposed by the respective vendors. Currently they are king in the industry’s hottest emerging market. On the application development, vendors offering HTML5 will continue to grow in importance and receive market acceptance within the industry.
