drive should be sufficient, but purchase as large a flash drive as you can afford. OR Since there is no required textbook, we STRONGLY recommend that you instead spend the money you would have spent on a textbook to buy a portable, USB (Universal Serial Bus) external disk drive of a size at least equal to 160GB (Gigabytes) and bring it to class, instead of a flash drive. You must have access to Duquesnes e-mail and a Web browser

Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts: Perspective and Skills

The Journalism and Multimedia Arts department dynamically bridges the distance between where the client/user is today and where that person wants to get to. For example, the client may be a small organization without many digital skills (where the client is) but needs a web site, a DVD for promotion, and a magazine layout for an advertisement (where the client wants to go) Through degree programs that are flexible, progressive, and robust with an ever expanding reach into the dynamic world of digital media and its design , Journalism and Multimedia Arts at Duquesne University provides the tools, the knowledge and encouragement you need to build your own bridge into the future. Through an aggressive curriculum geared toward the challenges of a rapidly changing world, students are prepared for both productive and creative lines of service. Students are taught to think, write, and speak both clearly and critically. In support of the University's mission to promote education for the mind, the heart, and the spirit, Journalism and Multimedia Arts challenges its students to achieve an intellectual and spiritual awareness that will positively impact future contributions to their families, communities, and professional affiliations.

Reading Assignments. Reading assignments are listed on the course schedule: they are Web pages (There are over 8,000 items...pages and graphics on the web site) and my lecture notes. You can also use Media Site to view lectures over the Internet. We will use some of the class periods to create actual New Media content. Class Format and Participation. The course will be a mixture of theory, demonstration, and handson experiences. Much of the class periods will be spent developing materials and projects.. Your web-based homework will be viewable by everyone over the Web Learning Activities. Assignments are due throughout the semester as shown on the tentative course schedule. The assignments and quizzes determine your course grade. They are intended to help you learn a variety of software applications and effective design principles. Storage. Throughout the semester you will electronically send assignments for evaluation. Most of these will be sent via File Transfer Protocol (FTP), followed by an e-mail from you to the GA stating the assignment is ready for grading. You will complete the assignments by creating numerous files, which collectively represent your solution to the assignments. You will need to store your work while you are working on the assignments. Each computer has a local Data drive. While you can store content there, the Data drives are periodically re-formatted, so you could lose your work. Also, you would need to always sit at the same computer, and other students could alter your content. Each of you also has available. a Network folder (drive Z:), where you can store data permanently (up to 800 Megabytes (Million bytes)note that a

DVD stores over 4 GigabytesBillions of bytes). No special considerations will be given if your files are lost, so please take every precaution to protect your work. The Z: drive is only accessible and visible if you are one of our two labs (Rooms 205 and 345). Its not a good idea to depend too heavily on the Z: drive. While it makes your lab-life less stressful, and makes things easy, in a real-setting, there will be no Z: drive, so try to not depend on it too heavily. Basically, well use the Z: drive to create folders for Dreamweaver. Due Dates. Assignments are due on the due date, by the beginning of class, as indicated on the course schedule.(Well give a 10minute late allowance). Late assignments will receive a 10% per class period penalty up to a maximum of 30%. E-mailing assignments. There may be times when you need to send an assignment as an e-mail attachment. All e-mail attachments (assignments) must include your name, e-mail address, and the title of the assignment. You should also label the subject of the e-mail message with your name and the assignment title. Do not begin the Subject with the word Assignment; it seems such subject words may cause Emails to be classified as being junk status. We generally respond to emailed assignments within 24 hours. If you do not get an email from us during that period, it means the email didnt reach us and you should re-send it. Quizzes. Three quizzes will be given during class throughout the semester. Quizzes cannot be made up and they must be taken during the assigned class period. I will drop the lowest quiz score.

Evaluation and Grading Policy

Jma260 Spring 2009_p.3

Your performance in the course is measured by the points you accumulate on all quizzes and learning activities (in-class and out-of-class). Activities
Homework Project-related Assignments Quizzes

Points
45% 40% 15%

I-Grade policy. Students must complete 80% of the coursework to warrant a grade of incomplete ("I"). This is a university rule. I grades must be removed by the date specified in the Duquesne calendar. Academic integrity. Students are expected to adhere to the Universitys rules and regulations on academic integrity. Students are responsible for reading the Universitys academic integrity policy. See:http://www.cte.duq.edu/resources/stdntdev/de fspols/integrity.html If you violate the policy (dont copy from each other, but feel free to ask others for help) you will receive a zero on that assignment, and you will be reported to the Academic Integrity Committee. A second violation will result you appearing before the College Academic Integrity committee. E-mail. Students, instructor and Graduate Assistant will often communicate electronically. Some assignment instructions may be given using e-mail. Students should check e-mail regularly. We will use your Duquesne e-mail address. Students with disabilities. Students with a documented disability may obtain appropriate academic support through the Office of Special Student Services. Please notify the professor and contact the Office of Special Student Services (412) 396-6657 for additional information. Emergency preparedness plan. Emergency procedures are posted in classrooms. Students and faculty are responsibility for acquainting themselves with emergency procedures so that they are prepared if an emergency should occur

Grading scale is A = 90 100%, B = 80 89%, C = 70 79%, D = 60 69%. The plus/minus system will be used So; how do I determine my grade? First, calculate three averages: Quiz, homework and client (project). Assume the three averages were 76, 84 and 91. Your grade (percentage) would be: .15 *76 + .45*84 +.4*91 = 85.6; a solid B The Project percentage will be calculated based on assignments that are explicitly classified as being project-based. The word project means the advertising campaign-related client assignments.

Course Policies
Attendance. Students should demonstrate professional behavior by attending class and actively participating in class activities. During the Dreamweaver portion of the course, attendance will be taken. Without a valid excuse, missing 3 or more classes will result in a letter-grade reduction. This sounds harsh, but we have found that students who fail to attend class during that portion of the course have difficulty later on. Once we finish with Dreamweaver, attendance will no longer be taken.
