Unity By The Shores 6th Annual Butterfly Release

hisper Your Wish to a Butterfly as it Takes Flight. There is an Indian Legend that says: "If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first capture a butterfly and whisper a wish to it. Since the butterfly cannot make a sound, it cannot reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. In gratitude for giving the butterfly its freedom the Great Spirit always grants the wish." We will hold our 6th Annual Butterfly Release on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 3 P.M., at Sunset Park on the Lake at 5th Avenue (Grand Ave and Emory Street). Asbury Park, NJ. Come join us and put your wishes and your prayers on wings as we release our butterflies to the world! You can pre-order your butterflies through our website: unitybytheshore.org or by calling (732) 918-3395. Butterflies are $15 each.

Dear Friends,
he year of 2012 is soon coming to an end. Chaos is prevalent, and some say it is to be the end of the World. Others say it is the end of the World as we knew it. What do we here at UCBTS believe? We affirm and see the potential of a peaceful world right here, right now. Jesus said the Kingdom of God is at hand. That was 2,000 years ago and many are still waiting for that to comepraying and waiting for that Kingdom to appear! Rev. Joanne M. Murphy As Unity students walking the spiritual path, we know it is up to us to create that change we want to see. If we yearn for peace in the world, WE NEED TO BE THAT PEACE; if we want love, WE MUST BE THAT LOVE; if we want Joy, WE NEED TO BE THAT JOY. In the World we see anger and judgment with both sides accusing each other. Its that Im Right, Youre Wrong consciousness. But they are just stories made up in ones mind, based on individual opinion. However, in Unity we practice Spiritual Principles, Laws of the Universe. Refer to our third principle which reminds us that we create our worldHuman Beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest world has its beginnings in thoughts. So, together, let us create a New World with the intention to refrain from making judgments about the duality in the outer world of Im right, youre wrong. We can change the world together by resolving I AM NOT GOING TO HOLD THOSE THOUGHTS. IM DONE WITH THAT! Individually we ask am I going to add to the anger, judgment and righteousness or wake up to the Truth that I am already in the Kingdom of God right here and now? The Truth is that LIFE IS ALWAYS FOLDING AND UNFOLDING in Its Perfect way. It is that Kingdom of God is at hand that Jesus told us of! In Unity we know that thoughts held in mind produce after their kindand you and I get to choose what to hold in our mind. Together, as One, we make our intention to live from Divine Mind, listening through prayer and meditation to that still, small voice. And, then, we will experience that New World!

Love, Peace and Joy! Rev. Joanne

"Meditation is to be aware of what is going on: in your body, in your feelings, in your mind, and in the world." - Thich Nhat Hanh. There are various forms of meditation in this tradition, such as sitting, walking, eating and mindful reading and discussing. As a practice of awareness in sitting meditation, one stops, is still, calming the mind and body. From a quiet, still place one can gain insight into a deeper understanding of patterns of thinking and feeling which affect our life. With some practice, this can lead to a growing capacity to be present to oneself and to the world. We are fortunate to meet with a community of friends who support each other toward a greater sense of peace and well-being. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining us. The contact person is Judy Weaver, jsweave9@aol.com.

Message from the President

s the summer starts to wind down and the kids start heading back to school I always get a little envious. I think about the new clothes and shoes, and the new pens and notebooks and I say to myself, I Sandi Robertson wish I was going back to school so I can get all new stuff, too! But more importantly they are expanding their minds, learning about new subjects, making new friends and they are continuing to grow, both physically and mentally. We at Unity by the Shore continue to grow, too, as we involve ourselves in new activities. Our Music Ministry continues to work on the CD, and it is now in the production phase, with a tentative release date in late autumn. Our Butterfly Release will take place on September 15 at Sunset Park in Asbury Park. This is a wonderful event where we put our prayers on wings as we release Monarch butterflies with the hope that they will take our intentions and prayers to the heavens. Our new bathrooms are almost finished, and work will begin on the flooring in the kitchen, hospitality, fellowship, and childrens church areas. I invite you to get into the back-to-school spirit. Perhaps you can take Reverend Joannes Thursday afternoon class, or maybe start a meditation practice by joining Judy Weaver and her Mindfulness Meditation group on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday nights. Or maybe take a peek at the wonderful literary offerings in our bookstoreI am sure Barbara and her team can help you find something to expand your learning potential. There are also many volunteer opportunities available on our various ministry teams. You can see me or any Board memberwe can suggest areas where your talents would serve best. I leave you with a quote that is on the billboard of the West Grove United Methodist Church in Neptune: Dont go through life, Grow through life.

Unity Light, Love, and Joy is Volunteers Inspiration

We are so pleased to welcome back our friend, Joe Koebel, who conducted "Course in Miracles" sessions at UBTS for nearly 15 years. Although he no longer conducts his classes here, he is still in our hearts! We welcome him back as our Sunday Service Guest Speaker! Let us show him our loving support and plan to attend so we can fill every seat! Blessings! Rev. Joanne

By Flo Higgins

achael Fredericks found Unity by the Shore just two short years ago and has already become a wonder woman in this community. She took on the role of fund raising chairwoman and hasnt stopped since. She explains her devotion to Unity saying, I am very grateful for the lifestyle offered at Unity. I love the light, love and joy, which inspires me through my week. Her first venture into fund raising here was when she and her husband Ken produced a successful Spaghetti Dinner. Then it was the 50/50 Raffle, which raised more than $8,000, the most ever, half of which went to the church. She is now involved in producing the Butterfly Release scheduled for Saturday, September 15 at Sunset Park, Asbury Park. As if that were not enough she and Ken are planning to serve a Love Offering Brunch on the fourth Sunday of every month after church. We know people love having food and a social time to be together after church, so we will provide it, she said. Rachael brings a spiritual philosophy to her Unity volunteer service when she explains, It isnt so much about raising the money, its about bringing more people into Unity and sharing our love and joy of life with them. Rachael originally found Unity when she and her mother went church hunting on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. She was 17 at the time and they found a Unity Church on the Cape. She explained that when she moved to this area she went on the Internet and found three Unity churches in New Jersey. Since she and her husband were living in Keyport with their four cats and a dog, the closest was Unity by the Shore. So she came to church and has been coming back ever since. She said, It was so friendly, I was greeted with hugs and love. It was wonderful. Rev. Joanne lives what she teaches. I love her, she said. I was looking for spiritual guidance other than from a book. I wanted to connect with loving people, with real people other than those I meet during the week in my career. People of the same mind. I found these people here at Unity by the Shore. Rachael has been a Program Manager at Public Service, Electric and Gas (PSE&G), managing energy efficiency programs and in the energy efficiency business for 12 years. She loves the fact she has been doing something which is good for everyone, helping others save money and energy and impacting our world by reducing our carbon footprint."

The Quality of Our Drinking Water

f you and your family are purchasing containers of bottled water, it may surprise you to learn that the water does not always come from the pristine locales described on the label. The only was to know what is in the bottle is to read the fine print. New FDA regulations recognize nine different types of water: artisan, fluoridated, ground, mineral, purified, sparkling, spring, sterile and well water. Bottled water manufacturers are required to use one of these terms on the label to identify their product. Municipal water is the source of 25 percent of the bottled water sold in this country. Once the water is processed, it can be sold as purified water at 240-10,000 times the price. In a four-year study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council, scientists found in some bottled water the same contaminants as in municipal water: bacteria, industrial solvents, chemicals from plastics, and arsenic. Ones choice is to contact a water cooler service that supplies water in reusable glass bottles. If you want to eliminate the fuel used to transport these, you might consider a home purification system. Systems differ in quality and types of impurities they remove. Before deciding on a purification system, request a copy of your water utilitys Annual Water Quality or Consumers Confidence Report. This reveals impurities found in your communitys water. If you are still concerned, you may want your water privately tested. In possession of this information on the quality of your water you can then visit the website of NSF International (www.nsf.org), a nonprofit public safety corporation that certifies water purification systems. Their search engine (www.nsf.org/certified/DWTU) lets you select contaminants you need to eliminate and tells you which system fits your needs. You may find out that an inexpensive countertop container with a charcoal filter will strain out what little contaminants are found in your water.
