APPENDIX 4C: Example Toolbox Training Modules

The drained filter must be placed with scrap metal for recycling. Concrete Truck Wash-Out Any washout of concrete trucks must take place in a purpose-built concrete washout bay. including concrete trucks. It is absolutely prohibited to carry out any vehicle servicing. An example of routine servicing is oil changes / or addition. Do not hose or sweep workshop floors onto unsealed ground (sand). Carry a drum with lid on the service vehicle. metals. to catch oil/fluid leaks. unless impractical. Store waste oil in a drum with a lid. Very large. repair and washing of vehicles. If carrying out repair and maintenance of vehicles in the field. slow-moving equipment such as piling drivers may be serviced in the field. This must be collected by a Dubai Municipality .Nakheel Environment Department TT 01 – MACHINERY MAINTENANCE & REPAIR Toolbox Training Module Background Maintenance. fuel. Mobile refueling vehicles must carry fuel spill clean-up materials. bob-cats (mini-scoop) and trucks. Concrete truck drivers are not permitted to wash out the remaining contents of a concrete truck over bare soil. you must use a combination of catch pans. storage drum for spilled fuel. for collection by waste contractor. however correct field servicing measures must be used. Store used coolant in a drum with a lid. groundwater within the soil (which flows to sea). and label the drum “waste coolant”. so oil/fluid captured in the trays or pans can be taken back to the workshop or oil storage area. Waste Storage & Disposal ☺ ☺ ☺ Used oil fillters must be drained into a container to collect waste oil. Workshop Floors ☺ Clean workshop floors by sweeping.approved waste contractor. and then putting waste from the floor into a rubbish bins. or into drains. and label the drum “waste oil”. Workshop & Field Jobs ☺ ☺ ☺ Always carry out routine maintenance of vehicles in a workshop. maintenance or cleaning on bare ground. This must be collected by a Dubai Municipality . alkaline wastewater (concrete waste water) and battery acids. Mobile equipment such as loaders (shovels). ☺ ☺ Refueling by mobile tankers may only be done if the above field servicing measures are implemented. drip trays and ground protective sheets under your work. and emergency repairs to other equipment may be done in the field. instead of hose for cleaning floor. Responsibility Contractors that cause contamination of land will be held responsible by Nakheel for clean-up work and costs.approved contractor for recycling. can cause harmful contaminants and wastes such as oil. to pollute the environment. Use a mop and bucket. Page 3 of 8 . grease. routine servicing must be completed at an approved workshop. Pollution of soil (sand). and other waste materials must be avoided. JCBs (back-hoes). Then oil must be dipped into a waste oil storage drum. catch trays.

BAD X Do not service machinery in the field without using drip trays & ground sheets to protect the ground. Note that this type of ground sheet can be used on bare ground without a concrete pad.

Nakheel Environment Department TT 02 – FUEL. oil. do not use rusty drums. containers and tanks must be kept on a sealed surface. General Fuel & Chemical Storage Requirements ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ All fuel must be stored within sealed drums. The contents of the spill clean-up kit must be restocked after use. All storage units must be in good condition. Any fuel/chemical spillage must be cleaned up immediately to prevent it from reaching the environment. Ensure that all chemical storage areas are adequately ventilated. Quantities of fuel. Hoses. Inter-locking paving is not considered a sealed surface. Pesticides must be kept in original packaging. Because the ground surface is often sand. which is capable of holding the stored liquid. these fuel/chemical drums and tanks must be kept within a “bund”. Waste Disposal Any residual paint left in paint tins must be completely dried out. Responsibility Contractors that cause contamination of land will be held responsible for clean-up work and costs by Nakheel. Do not drill. oils. puncture or allow holes to be made in the bund walls for pipes and cables. paint or other chemicals exceeding 500L must always be stored in an adequately designed and constructed bund. For example. to avoid any contact with the ground. and contents must be checked for adequacy on a regular basis. including use of the spill clean-up kit. This leads to contamination of both the land and the groundwater. PAINT AND CHEMICAL STORAGE Toolbox Training Module Background Fuels. Fuels. oils. All personnel involved in the fuel/chemical storage must be familiar with the clean-up and response procedures in the event of a spill. Bulk Storage ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ If you store more than 500 litres of fuel or liquid chemicals. such as concrete or a metal drip tray. An appropriate spill clean-up kit must be readily accessible from the storage area. A “bund” is a structure with a sealed floor and four (4) sealed walls. paints and other hazardous chemicals must be stored and handled properly. Drums. Drums must have lids in place. containers or tanks. it is easy for the spillage of fuel or oil to reach the water beneath the ground. paints and other chemicals are required for construction activities. hand-pumps and fittings used for fuel dispensing must be kept within the bund or storage area when not in active usage. However. with the original label in place. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals must be kept near the stored chemicals. prior to the tins/drums being disposed of as general waste. unless effective sealing around the opening can be easily demonstrated. Do not reuse pesticide containers for any purpose other than storing the original packaged product. which spoils the environment. Do not use bunds for general storage of equipment unrelated to fuel or chemicals. Page 5 of 8 . in event of drum/tank failure. these materials are also hazardous to the natural environment.

BAD X X Do not store drums on bare ground – place drums on a concrete pad or metal drip tray. PAINT AND CHEMICAL STORAGE Toolbox Training Module ☺ GOOD Drums on concrete pad. Hose is stored within the bund. Page 6 of 8 . X Hose and pump is over bare ground. Bulk storage – bund wall has been built around concrete pad.

to reduce packaging waste. pick them up and put in a waste bin. Order chemicals and materials in bulk where appropriate. Waste must not overflow out of storage areas. Recycling waste must be stored separately in clearly marked areas. such as skips bins or drums. waste oil. PAINT AND CHEMICAL STORAGE Background Toolbox Training Module Good management of waste at construction sites is important. sewage. to maintain healthy conditions. Do not mix recycling waste with general waste. This is your proof that you have disposed of waste lawfully. Plastic bags get blown into the desert. Waste Collection ☺ ☺ ☺ Arrange for regular waste collection. Disposal of waste at a landfill should be the last option for waste management. Empty waste bins / skips before they are full. with signs indicating the type of waste to be stored in each area. Used batteries from vehicles and machinery. Mandatory recycling ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ These wastes must be recycled: Cardboard packaging/cartons. Do not stockpile waste on site. Waste oil. You will be required to excavate and dispose of any buried waste correctly. Metal re-bar. If you see plastic bags or waste blowing around. chemicals. Do not allow waste to start rotting (decomposing) on site. if you get audited or inspected. Waste Storage All unsorted (mixed) waste must be stored in containers. to encourage waste recycling. and reuse or recycle waste. Reduce waste ☺ ☺ Order the correct quantity of building materials. Other scrap metal such as soft-drink cans and drained oil filters. Waste must be collected by a Dubai Municipality-approved waste transport contractor. and so that soil or water contamination does not result. Do not bury waste on-site. Keep all records of waste collection.Nakheel Environment Department TT 02 – FUEL. end up in wadis or eaten by camels (who die from them). Waste transport contractors must be approved to carry each different type of waste. for example. Some companies pay to accept recycling waste. Page 7 of 8 . so that wind cannot blow waste out of the skips/bins. Revenue paid by recycling contractors can be used as an incentive for staff. Contractors are required to reduce waste generation. in addition to any fines issued by the Government. Responsibility Contractors that cause contamination of land will be held responsible by Nakheel for clean-up work and costs. to reduce left-over materials/waste.

to prevent land contamination. X Do not store waste on the ground – waste must be stored in skip bins or contained. Page 8 of 8 .Nakheel Environment Department TT 02 – FUEL. BAD X X Do not stockpile waste. Skip bin has not been overfilled. PAINT AND CHEMICAL STORAGE Toolbox Training Module ☺ GOOD Skip bin is covered to stop wind blowing the waste out. and wind blowing away rubbish.
