Effects of Global Warming

Green house gases are the major culprit causing global warming. Some of the causes are
attributed to release of green house gases by human activities The effects of green house
gases are visible more prominently in the recent years, with number of natural calamities
on the rise in the whole world. The main gases contributing to green house effect are
carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide. The largest producers of these
gases are the thermal power plants, which burn the fossil fuels and produce these gases in
large quantities. The second biggest sources of these green house gases are the road
vehicles and industries.

Climate change impacts everything, in the planet including winds, rains, temperature,
agriculture, biodiversity and ecosystem

Some of the worst effects of global warming are:

Rise in sea level: The melting of polar ice and the melt down of glaciers that result in
floods and other natural calamites. The melting of ice at the poles had led the mean sea
level and which will engulf low lying countries. Mountain glaciers are smaller now than
they were 150 years ago, and in the last 100 years, the average global temperature has
increased by roughly 1.4 degrees F (0.8 degrees C).

Biodiversity: Another major area which is affected by the global warming is the natural
habitat like birds and animals. Some of the plants and animals species live today risk
extinction because of their inability to adapt to climate warming. Some migratory birds
change their time and place of migration because of the season changes.. This all is due to
the loss of habitat through desertification, deforestation and ocean warming.

Diseases: The global warming is also responsible for the introduction of some new
diseases. The bacteria are more effective and multiply much faster in warmer
temperatures compared to cold temperatures. The increase in temperature has led to
increase in the microbes that cause diseases.

Agriculture: Global warming is also effecting the production of agriculture As the crops
are getting destroyed by the sudden change in temperatures or sudden on set of rains like
flash floods. An increase in drought conditions leads quickly to a shrinking water supply
and a decrease in quality agricultural conditions. This puts global food production and
supply in danger and leaves populations at risk for starvation.

Destruction of Ecosystem: Because of global warming, the earth’s atmosphere is getting

more unpredictable with heavy rains in the areas, which have scanty rainfall or drought in
the areas, which received good annual rainfall. The months of rainfall has also getting
affected. Changing climatic conditions and dramatic increases in carbon dioxide will put
our ecosystems to the test, threatening supplies of fresh water, clean air, fuel and energy
resources, food, medicine and other matters we depend upon not just for our lifestyles but
for our survival. Scientists are already observing the bleaching and death of coral reefs
due to warming ocean waters.

Global warming could cause a Global Great Depression, costing the world up to 20
percent of its annual Global Domestic Product. Ignoring global warming would end up
costing $20 trillion by 2100.
