Match Report:
After a largely disappointing opening game for Liverpool, a tricky test up against the Champions was not the best fixture for the Rodgers Revolution. However Liverpool were very unlucky not to come out of the match with all three points after a 2-2 draw. Martin Skrtel opened the scoring with a bullet header in the 34th minute, from a Steven Gerrard corner. The centre back left Joe Hart in the Manchester City goal no chance as Liverpool celebrated a much deserved lead after a dominant spell. It was clear to see Rodgers mentality was getting through to the Liverpool players, with the first half performance filled with composure and controlled passing. A key example of this was Joe Allen who completed 26 passes with a 100% completion record in the first half. Allen the 15 million man from Swansea was a prominent figure in the game resulting in him being awarded the man of the match. Manchester city playing their new formation of three at the back with wing backs were leaving plenty of gaps for which the extremely impressive Raheem Sterling on his premier league debut. However the class Manchester City have in their team can never be ignored and Tevez nearly put the Citizens in the lead with a shot from a near impossible angle hitting the post. The second half started as the first had finished with Liverpool pressurising Manchester City and trying to retain the ball. Then in the 63rd minute after some sloppy Liverpool defending Yaya Toure was able to sweep home the ball from 6 yards. Manchester City was level for just over 2 minute when Steven Gerrard had a shot from long range which hit Jack Rodwell on the arm. The contentious decision gave Liverpool a free kick. Suarez took aim and scored a magnificent effort, swerving it around the wall just out of the reach of Joe Hart. Martin Skrtel, the earlier hero soon became the villain, gifting Carlos Tevez his 100th goal in English football with a miss timed back pass. Tevez calmly rounded Reina and slotted it into the open net. In the closing stages both teams had a chance to get all three points with both Andy Carroll and Edin Dzeko coming close to scoring. Mancini believed his team showed good character to come from behind twice however will need to improve if they are to retain their crown as the Premiership champions. Mancini went on to say that with the transfer window closing in the next few days they should try very hard to sign some new players.

Rodgers believed that his team played with a terrific game plan in order to stop Manchester City playing their own way. He also went on to mention the youth aspect Liverpool played today, starting with both Sterling and Coates and later bringing on Shelvey. Rodgers applauded the plays in particular Sterling who Rodgers claims has been outstanding and really developed a responsible part of his game.
