VoIP how it works, the technical stuff (Voice over Internet Protocol VoIP) Telephony service gives you

u the ability to connect a phone to your data network, hear a dial tone and make calls. IP Telephony offers an affordable alternative to traditional voice services using Voice over Internet Protocol commonly referred to as VoIP. This is the same technology that moves data, text and images around the internet. VoIP technology converts ordinary speech into data and arranges it into packets. The packets are compressed using codecs and sent via an internet link to its destination where its then uncompressed and turned back into ordinary speech. Compression of Packets The choice of compression codec affects bandwidth usage and the call quality. The choice of codec and quality of your internet service provider account (in terms of upload and download speed and packet routing) can also affect your call quality. The industry standard for measuring voice quality is as a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) on a scale from 1-5 where 1 is the lowest and 5 the highest. Telco-grade voice refers to MOS scores of around 4.0-4.2.

If an internet connection suffers from congestion or you share it with others who download large files you may get a MOS score in the range of 3.0-3.5. It's possible to get a MOS score of 4.1-4.4 with a G.711 codec (operating at 64 Kbps) however that will chew up a little bit more of your download quota. By using a low bandwidth codec such as G.729 (operating at 8 Kbps) it's still possible to achieve a MOS score of 3.9 from your IP device to the network. The difference between a traditional call and a VoIP call at a MOS of 3.9 would be virtually indiscernible to most of us. However codec G.729 unfortunately has a higher it cost on CPU power from your local computer. If you are running a softphone application on your desktop your CPU processor utilisation will be slightly higher as well. Quality of Service Quality of Service (QoS) on an Internet line is absolutely essential when implementing business grade VoIP services. QoS ensures that voice delay-sensitive traffic receives priority through the use of Class of Service (CoS), Low-Latency Queuing (LLQ), Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED), traffic shaping and network-based application recognition. Having QoS on an Internet line eliminates customers concerns about voice and data bandwidth congestion on a converged voice and data network. Routers on each end of the IP network will prioritise the voice and data traffic as needed.

VoIP Protocols There are only a few important VoIP protocols which have derived from various standard bodies and vendors; namely H.323 and SIP are the most common examples of industry standard protocols. H.323 H.323 was until recently the industry standard. It was originally created for multimedia conferencing on LANs, but due to its high implementation it was decided to expand its horizon, thus, H.323 was later extended to cover Voice over IP. This Voice over IP standard has the ability to handle both point to point communications and multipoint conferences. In fact, H.323 defines four logical components: Terminals, Gateways, Gatekeepers and Multipoint Control Units (MCUs). Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is now the standard for establishing a Voice over IP connection. SIP is an application layer control protocol for creating, modifying and terminating sessions with one or more participants (it can be used for conferences as well). As to what regards its structure, this Voice over IP standard is similar to that of HTTP (a client-server protocol). Data requests are generated by the client and sent to the server. The server processes the requests and then sends back data packets containing a response to the client. A request followed by a response make a transaction.
