Google Summer of Code
Appstream for Apper
Now that this summers Google Summer of Code has inished, a very interesting project has come from Matthias Klumpp. His goal was to improve AppStream and a software center for all Linux distributions. To achieve this he created a little library called appstream-core for creating the AppStream application database. The project can integrate different tools to use the AppStream data and combine it with the PackageKit information. Shown below is a irst result:

You can see that Apper can detect the difference between applications and packages. All applications are listed on top and the packages are placed afterwards. The code, which is based on the newest PackageKit, is already checked into git. At the moment there are packages for openSUSE. It is advised to wait for this new code when your distribution ships it. Hopefully this happens soon. Quelle: Matthias Klumpp

Kernel Review
"Kernel Log – Coming in 3.6 (Part 1): Filesystems and storage"
Thorsten Leemhuis just now continued his Kernel Log series. The newest article about Kernel 3.6 contains interesting details about ilesystems and storage. Btrfs The still experimental Btrfs ilesystem now supports quotas for subvolumes (separate areas within the ilesystem), setting 26 27 out how much space they are permitted to occupy (1 , 2 and others). A further new feature in Btrfs is "send/receive" 28 (1 and others). This enables userspace programs to determine the difference between two snapshots, to save these differences to a ile and to restore these backups as required. This is particularly useful for incremental, atomic backups. A more 29 30 detailed explanation of this function, which is also available in ZFS , can be found in this LWN.net article . The userspace 31 32 tool for making use of this currently remains conined to the Btrfs ilesystem tools development tree . Details about this 33 and other changes relating to Btrfs are discussed by Btrfs maintainer Chris Mason in his main git pull request. Ext4 According to the commit comments , the ext4 code no longer stores quota information in visible iles, but instead stores it in the form of hidden inodes in the metadata. The result is that quota support has been upgraded to a "irst class supported 35 feature". A further change to the ext4 code improves performance when overwriting iles, as explained by Theodore 36 Ts'o . Do not follow One of the new functions implemented in Linux 3.6 is based on an idea that dates back to 1996 – the kernel can now be conigured to not follow hardlinks and softlinks in directories with a set "sticky" bit (such as /tmp/), when those links point 38 somewhere higher up the directory tree. As LWN.net explains in this article , this feature, which can be activated via sysctl, puts a stop to a common trick used by attackers to escalate their privileges by using background services running as root.
