Apostle’s Creed Selah

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:1, 14 “At its simplest level, if God is God and cannot err and if the Scriptures are God’s Word, then it has to be infallible. An infallible God cannot err. Scripture, which comes from God, by definition, has to be infallible. How could it be God’s Word and at the same time be fallible? The Greek word for infallible is tekmērion it means: that from which something is surely and plainly known. To the question “Is the Bible truly the Word of God?” For us the answer is “yes” then the Bible must be without error.” A journalist some years ago went back to the archeological evidence in order to debunk the Bible. He came away converted. The Bible, he discovered, was the most extraordinary document he had ever studied. It projected the truth of history in periods when there was no other historical account. Archeological evidence is demonstrating that it is absolutely correct, even in the most meticulous details. It is impossible to look at the totality of Scripture and attribute it to anything other than the work of the Holy Spirit.

Pastors Dr. William and Dr. Barbara DeSue

Through three and a half millennia, these documents have survived, not only as holy writ, but as historical records, basically unchallenged. Over the ages the Bible has withstood every single challenge or test. Those studying the debates at the canonical council where it was determined which books were worthy of being called Scripture, truly sought the mind of God. The probative tests that were applied to determine whether or not writing was Scripture were tougher than anything in the scientific method. Many critics in the last two hundred years have looked for holes in the Bible. They asserted, for example, that there was no evidence that the Psalms were written by David, more than a thousand years before Christ, because they contain information not known in those days. The Psalms were in the Maccabean era, the critics said. Then came the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls. Today no reputable scholar would argue that the Psalms all came from the time of the Macabees. In Psalm 22 we see a precise description of the crucifixion, which wasn’t even invented until a hundred years before Christ. One has to conclude that the Psalms were inspired by God. The discovery of the Hittite Empire is another verification of the accuracy of the Bible. Critics claimed that the Bible erred in speaking of such a kingdom of which there was no other historical record. Yet within the last fifty years archeologists have discovered that there was indeed a Hittite Empire, just as the Bible said, with a finely defined language. One by one, scholarly attacks upon the Scriptures have been discredited by archeological discoveries and other evidence. What is bound together in a book called the Bible is historically accurate, was correctly compiled, and is extraordinary because no book has a history like it. It prophesied events long before they occurred. Those prophecies are fulfilled in the facts of history. To say that the Bible,

which stands up to all tests and attacks is nonetheless just a book of human origin, is simply an unenlightened position. That is not the view of a scholar – it’s the position of someone who has an atheistic presupposition and therefore has to say that in order to discredit the Bible. When we say that the Bible is God’s Word, we mean in its original autographs. In the process of translating and copying through the years the original autographs could have been mistakenly changed in some places. But in its original autographs the Bible has to be without error.

is correct as opposed to someone else’s. But out of that process of trying to interpret God’s Word, truth emerges, though at times some of us may be off base in one way or another. This is the tension of the believer’s life. If it were otherwise, we would be noting but robots. Part of that tension is healthy and the consequence of God having made us in His image with minds of our own.

The most remarkable thing, though, is the difference the Scripture makes in the lives of those who sincerely follow it. Rarely will you find someone saying, “I’ve studied the Bible; I’ve lived it for years and it doesn’t work for me.” The majority opinion is they who’ve read it and live it say that the more they truly absorb the word of The resurrection of Christ is one of the most powerful attestations God and seek to live by its precepts; they find that God is able to to the accuracy of Scripture. Jesus, as He was preparing to return to the Father, commissioned His disciples, the eleven then and us today, saying, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 18." In this Great Commission, Jesus effectively said, “We have spent the last three years together, and I exemplified making disciples of and with you, I have all the authority, so go and do has you have seen me do and taught.” A key aspect of what Jesus did with His disciples was to build relationships, and in making disciples, He is calling us to build relationships as well. Some relationships develop naturally, while others take more effort on one party’s part. There are some important aspects of building relationships that is clearly laid out in scriptures.

Charles “Chuck” Wendell Colson (October 16, 1931 – April 21, 2012) was a Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973 and later a noted Evangelical Christian leader and cultural commentator. Once known as President Nixon’s “hatchet man,” Colson gained notoriety at the height of the Watergate affair for being named as one of the Watergate Seven, and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for attempting to defame Pentagon Papers defendant Daniel Ellsberg. He became a Christian in 1973, and the following year served seven months in the federal Maxwell Prison in Alabama as the first member of the Nixon administration to be incarcerated for Watergate-related charges. Colson’s mid-life conversion to Christianity sparked a radical life change that led to the founding of his non-profit ministry Prison

Fellowship and to a focus on Christian worldview teaching and training. Colson was also a public speaker and the author of more than 30 books. He was the founder and chairman of The Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, which is “a research, study, and networking center for growing in a Christian worldview”, and while he was alive included Colson’s daily radio commentary, BreakPoint, which was heard in its original format on more than 1,400 outlets across the united States. Colson received 15 honorary doctorates, and in 1993 was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, the world’s largest annual award (over uS$1 million) in the field of religion, given to a person who “has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension”. He donated this prize to further the work of Prison Fellowship, as he did all his speaking fees and royalties. In 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President George W. Bush. Our Jewish Hertigage

Perhaps one of the most fascinating Biblical studies is the historic and prophetic significance of Tishrei these special days. While believers are not re(September – October) quired to keep these feasts, every believer should be very familiar with them, as they not only celXeshvan ebrate a historical event in Israel's past but are, (October – November) at the same time, a prophecy of future events… or a type. Our roots are in Judaism. In Christian Kislev theology, a type is a factual happening in history, (November – December) which is a glimpse of one or more actual events yet to come… a significance that is not always Tevet apparent at the original occurrence. The subse(December – January) quent happenings are called the antitype, which usually are more intense, and/or more important Shevat than the original type. Western ideas of prophecy (January – February) involve prediction and fulfillment. The Hebrew idea of prophecy is a pattern that is repeated one Adar or more times… multiple fulfillments with one (February – March) ultimate fulfillment. Each fulfillment is both a type of, and a lesson on, the ultimate fulfillNisan ment.

new Jewish year, 5770, will be starting in a few weeks. The Hebrew Calendar is different than the Gregorian Calendar, starting in the fall and not in the winter, with different names for the months and months of different lengths – the Hebrew months are 29 or 30 days long.

God introduced the Seven Feasts of Israel as the children of Israel were encamped at Mount Sinai. Although these seven holidays are referred to in several places in the Bible, it is only in Leviticus 23 that all seven holidays are listed in chronological order. They are called "the feasts of the Lord" which simply means that they were instituted by the Lord Himself, a fact that lends them much solemnity and importance. They were “holy convocations” that took place at "appointed times". Note: The feasts are celebrated on the same day of the Jewish calendar every year, but since the Jewish year is not the same length as a solar year on the Gregorian calendar used by most of the western world, the date shifts on the Gregorian calendar.

shanna, also called Feast of Trumpets, falls in the autumn, around the month of September. This year Rosh Hashanah falls on September 17, 2012 (1st day). God said in Leviticus 23:24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the SEVENTH month, on the first of the month, shall ye have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. On this day the High Priest blows the ram’s horn (the Shofar) announcing the beginning of the New Year. Jewish Tradition gives this day a fourfold meaning: 1. New Years day. 2. The day of remembrance. 3. The Day of Judgment. 4. The day of blowing the Shofar. On this day Isaiah 60-61 is read in the Synagogues to teach the lesson that eventually the Lord will be revealed as King and be accepted as the ruler of the world. Many believe this day points to the Rapture of the Church when the Messiah Jesus will appear in the heavens as He comes for His bride, the Church. The Rapture is always associated in Scripture with the blowing of a loud trumpet (I Thessalonians 4:13-18 and I Corinthians 15:52).

Rosh Hashanah or Feast of Trumpets: The next festival after Pentecost is Rosh Hashanah, which is also called “the Jewish new year” and occurs on the 1st of the month of Tishri, the SEVENTH month of the year according to God’s calendar. On Jewish calendars, Rosh Hashanah is considered to be the first holiday of the year, as Tishri is the first month of the year, despite the fact that this does not follow the biblical sequence. It follows with the “10 days of awe” and with the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur, the most holy of holidays. Atonement means “at one with God”. The 10 days of awe are in preparation for Yom Kippur; this period of 10 days is a time to make peace with enemies, repent and ask forgiveness for our wrongdoings. Rosh Ha-

Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) On Yom Kippur it is a time to seek forgiveness from God. The Day of Atonement is a day of fasting and repentance, affording man the opportunity to cleanse himself of his sins and renew his relationship with God. This implies resurrection and judgment. This is a time of praying and fasting enabling there to be a "oneness with God". It is a solemn day where seeking God’s forgiveness is the focus, not seeking pleasures. In

Apostle’s CReeD
According to Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry; this creed arose out of the early Western church and should be thought of as a summary of the Apostles’ teaching rather than directly attributable to them. Originally it was essentially a baptismal confession and had several variations. The form used today dates from the eighth century and reads as follows: “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried and He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again and sitteth at the right hand of the Father, From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen” *Catholic meaning the universal church.
